Wonderful History Lesson
Jun 2021
I wanted to come here for the Fred Harvey History. I was not disappointed. What a lovely building and very nice historical displays. So much to read and learn about the Grand Canyon and Fred Harvey, his restaurants, and wait staff. Lots of Antiques and memorabilia. Connected to a great gift shop! Very busy area of the Grand Canyon South Rim.

Excellent....

This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the history and people associated with the Grand Canyon; especially the iconic architect Mary Colter. The fireplace, and Lodge itself is a testament to her creativity (as are several nearby structures).
One also learns about the "Harvey" girls, and their employer.
Coupled with an interesting little gift shop, and accented with views of the Canyon outside it's windows; this is a wonderful little gem of a historical showcase.

Saw stagecoach inside so popped in to see and ask docent who was the manufacturer as it seemed reminiscent of a style made in concord new Hampshire specifically for Yellowstone in 1881 yet distinct from the famous concord coach seen in all the old western movies.
Had a nice talk with him and enjoyed the displays. This is a very small exhibit yet one which places bright angel lodge and the early entrepreneurial, European American history of south rim in perspective.
Very nice history of the famous Harvey Girls.
Coach is now out in the main lobby so displays in the history room have been expanded.

Fireplace made from rocks and stones of geologic age
May 2018
The Bright Angel Lodge History Room displays the genius of architect Mary Colter. Known as the “Geologic Fireplace”, the layered stones of her design were put together in the same geological sequence as the rock found along the Bright Angel trail - from river to rim. You should read more about this place before going there otherwise its geologic history will be lost. We find the place attractive having lots of rocks and stones, but later read about its significance.

Interesting history and a great geology and architecture lesson.
Sep 2017
The Bright Angel Lodge History Room displays the genius of architect Mary Colter. The room’s dramatic rock fireplace has tall, sloping outlines that mirror the cliffs and strata of the canyon outside. Known as the “Geologic Fireplace,” the layered stones of her design were put together in the same geological sequence as the rock found along the Bright Angel trail - from river to rim.

History

We used the Bright Angel Restroom and happened upon this small museum that is really just a room. We took a quick look around and were able to view the exhibits in less than ten minutes.

Small, But Interesting Museum
Feb 2018 • Couples
The History Room in Bright Angel Lodge is to the right of the hotel’s front desk. It has artifacts from the time when the Fred Harvey Company was the park’s chief concessionaire. Harvey struck a deal with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway to operate a series of restaurants along its rail lines, including the stop at the Grand Canyon. Included in the displays are a horse-drawn carriage, which took visitors on scenic rides along the Grand Canyon rim; a Harvey Girl uniform; items used in the restaurant (china, utensils, menu, etc.); photos; the uniform of a courier (a lady guide); and items from the Judy Garland movie called “The Harvey Girls.” Small, but very interesting. And, it’s free.

Nice Museum

We didnt stay at the lodge, but we stopped by here and were able to visit it. It gives a very nice history lesson about the first tourists to the canyon and the first people to set up hotels.

We stayed at the Bright Angel Lodge- but anyone can go in through the lobby and see this small museum for no charge- the museum has pictures and information about history of the lodge, original owner, Harvey Girls and Mary Coulter - can see some old fine china, as well as other interesting exhibits-
