This was our first hike of our trip, so we only went up to the Overlook. I was winded- not used to the elevation. It was a beautiful spot. There was someone smoking at the top, which was disappointing.

What a super trail. Its about 7 miles RT to the patrol hut. You hike through lush forest to a scenic overlook of Phelps lake, down switchbacks to near the lake and then head west into the canyon. Up a fairly gentle grade up onto...More

The road to the trail head is definitely a high clearance vehicle only road right now. Parking at the start of the dirt road is a great option for regular cars. We parked at the bottom and hiked up to the trail head. It was...More

Getting to the parking was the worst part, the trail has huge potholes! The hike was not bad and we ran into 4 moose and it was a moment of a lifetime! The finish of the trail is an overlook of Phelps lake- talk about...More

We only hiked as far as the Phelps Lake Overlook. The climb was a bit steep but still very doable. I would describe it as easy to moderate. There are plenty of places to stop along the way and catch your breath if you are...More

Perfect hike for a family. We went together to the Phelps Lake overlook, then some of use hiked around the lake, while some of us ventured into Death Canyon. Something for everyone, and both were so beautiful! Bring plenty of water and bear spray (never...More

My knees were about to give out by the last day of our Teton/Yellowstone vacation, but we took our sons advice and decided to try and make it to the Phelps Lake Overlook. I'm so glad we did, "outstanding" is my review. If you get...More

Out of a 7 night stay in Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, and the Black Hills, this was my favorite place. The hike was difficult, but ohhh so fun. I workout 3-4 times a week for about 1-1.5 hours running about 3 miles and lifting weights. This...More

I was hesitant on hiking this trail based off the chances of seeing a bear but we decided to go. This was the most beautiful and breathtaking hike we have ever taken. I have three teenagers and all of us in great shape and we...More

Not for the faint of heart as the up and down ate pretty tough but the view from the top is amazing. Then once you get into Death Canyon, the view from the bottom isn't bad either.... Saw snakes and marmots quite regularly once down....More
