We were there the Sunday before the wildfire spread. It's sad to think the view will never be the same. The walk was steep going up but not unbearable and well worth it. I cannot say enough good things about Gatlinburg and the Smokies!

I would have given it 5 stars except for the horrible parking situation. Smokey Mountain National Park definitely needs to address the parking. We arrived before 10 am and There was not enough parking. As we were leaving it was more crowded and and vehicles were parking illegally in the parking lot and unsafely on the side of the road... We chose to visit Clingmans Dome so we could see one of the tallest mountains east of the Mississippi River. As well as it's proximity to Kodak, Tennessee where we were visiting family. We visited on black friday and this location was packed. Many people had to park along road as parking lot was full. Luckily there were many restrooms... More

The hike up to the tower was a bit taxing on my family (kids 5,7,9,) but I would guess that was more because of the cold and blustery winds. We visited the week of Thanksgiving. Once we did get to the top of the tower, we looked out as quickly as possible because the winds were so brutal! But I... More

This is the highest point in the Smokey Mountains for miles around. To get to the top, there is a 1/2 mile walk from the parking lot to the base of the tower. The walk is paved, but very steep. Keep in mind that it is not only steep, but the elevation is over 6,000 feet. Also dress appropriately. The... More

We went up to see the great views however the hike was challenging. Although the trail was paved it is up a pretty steep incline. It is worth the hike but you will feel it the next day in your legs. There are several benches along the way to stop and catch your breath which is nice.

We visited the week of Thanksgiving. There was ice on the sides of the mountains on the road up to Clingman's Dome, and it was cold and windy at the top. The hike up to the observation tower was short (about 1/2 mile) and steep, so those of us not in top physical condition had to stop and rest a... More

I would suggest checking the weather before driving up to the dome. The weather seemed fine at the bottom of the mountain but once we got to the dome we couldn't see a thing! There was at least a 10 degree difference in temperature from the bottom to the top of the mountain. There are several pull offs to get... More

If you have the chance to visit Clingmans Dome, I say do it!! What a spectacular sight!!! While the climb is arduous and not for the faint of heart, it is well worth the sweat. There are points along the hike to sit and catch your breath. But the sight you will experience when you reach the top will take... More

Well, it's not Pikes Peak but it is actually prettier in my opinion! Add on another 8,000 feet and you would have Pikes Peak. The Smoky Mountains are absolutely beautiful in their own way, green trees, rock outcrops and the smoky haze that is always present. Granted the smoke on this visit was due to the many wildfires in the... More
