My fiance and I made out first attempt to visit Clingmans Dome on a Thursday. We drove over from out hotel in Gatlinburg. Which just the drive over is so beautiful. In Gatlinburg it was a partly cloudy morning. However, as we drove further into...More

The turn-off for Clingman's Dome is on Newfound Gap Road past Newfound Gap Lookout. On the way to the Dome you are on a ridgeline that seperates Tennesee & North Carolina. Clingman's Dome itself sits on the Appalachin Trail. Once at the parking lot there...More

I'd traveled to Gatlinburg back in the 80s and it was wonderful to return. Every person needs to make the trek up Clingmans Dome to see things from the top of the Eastern US World! As expected the trip is 'uphill' all the way so...More

Nice place to visit but have stamina to walk up the hill for around 0.6 miles. 360 degree view from dome is amazing and you are lucky if you get clear blue sky and long distance visibility.

There's a steep half mile hike to get to the observation tower, but it's worth the climb. The views are amazing. It's a lot colder and very windy at the summit so it's a good idea to dress in layers. Since it's such a popular...More

We decided to view either sunrise or sunset from Clingmans Dome. Considering the popularity and the Fall color rush, we sticked with Sunrise to beat the crowds and on hindsight, it was a very wise decision. Sunrise was at 7:54 AM, so its not too...More

Clingmans Dome is a observation deck at highest point in the park. There is a small but steep hike from the parking lot to the deck. Parking lot gets filled up soon and we saw that many cars were parked alongside the road. The deck...More

The path to the observation deck is steep, but it's paved with plenty of benches and breathtaking scenery to distract you from the climb. We visited during mid-morning and had no problem finding parking around 9:45, however there was a significant wait for parking when...More

Once you finally reach the top, after a strenuous walk up the hill, the views are breathtaking. While it was a busy Saturday, it did not seem overcrowded. My advice is to go EARLY as it obviously gets busier later in the day. The trails...More

Clingmans Dome is the name of the mountain. The road to the Clingmans Dome parking area is a bit curvy and there are some drop offs. I would think your husband's problem would be that road more than the .5 mile paved hike... More
