We have been to the summit several times and chose to go there in the mid afternoon with our granddaughter so she could hike a trail into the crater and then shoot pictures at sunset. We had been to the summit for both sunrise and sunset and found that sunset was equally as impressive. Sunrise visits now require a permit.... More

This should be on your "don't miss" list. A bit of a drive up to 10K feet, but the crater is absolutely breathtaking.

We took the summit park and bicycle tour to Haleakala with Maui sun riders bicycle tour. The experience was spectacular and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors. The guide, Jacob, was knowledgeable and enlightening. The ride down was an adrenaline rush. Definitely do this

This is a dormant volcano, the caldera has been modified by erosion, but still it was wonderful. The view from the 10,000 ft viewing place was awesome. The numerous telescope are really neat. I wish there was more of a visitor focused the telescopes and their function.

We arrived at the park about 5 and sunset was 6:34. That gave us enough time to take a short hike to view the crater on the way up at the overlook. If you make this stop, take a look at the map on the way in and stay to the right. There is a lookout spot with glass and... More

Went with our family, the drive to the summit is a bit nerve racking but with it. Dress warm as we were told to do the same and it was true. In town the temp was 78 and at the summit is was 39 on Feb 27! Nice place for a walk with our 5 year old. Lots of well... More

But if you do, recognize that it will take at least twice as long to get up as it did to get down, and BRING WATER. You are fully exposed to the sun and wind the entire time. Also be prepared NOT to hike if you're experiencing any altitude sickness issues. You might not experience any problems just from driving... More

The crater is awesome to view and to visit. There are so many good photo opportunities. You are higher than the clouds!

The thing about Maui is to get around the people. There are so many people. But if you don't do the sunrise thing, Haleakala is probably better. You'll see more. Why? Less people and less clouds. The crater of Haleakala is often full of clouds and you can't see the amazing formations in the dust and rock...almost like the surface... More

This is a must see stop in Maui. Very beautiful drive up. Allow plenty of time as you would want to stop for pictures. For sure watch out for bikes coming down.
