There are enough reviews here of the amazing features of this incredible hike so I'll leave that alone. I am however slightly concerned that several reviews I've read describe this hike as "easy". While it may be easy for you and me, this hike clearly falls in the "moderate" difficulty rating by commonly accepted standards. There is significant elevation change... More

One of the greatest medium trails in the park. Takes you all the way to the bottom of a crater. Amazing views, lots of birds. Not difficult at all, can be completed in 3 hours or less. Loved it and would definitively recommend if you have at least 2 days to spend in the park.

A 1958 lava lake has solidified into a highly interesting plain within a volcanic caldera. Steam rises from active vents. Take plenty of water, as parts of this hike are exposed to the tropical sun. However, portions are within tropical rainforest. One of the best hikes I have ever done in terms of scenic beauty.

This is a moderate hike down to and across the floor of the Kilauea Iki crater which reached its current form after a violent eruption in 1954 (and perhaps again later in the 1960s). There is a movie shown twice a day in the visitor center about the Kilauea Iki eruption. There is a small-ish parking lot at the Kilauea... More

This was an incredible view. We went with a paid tour guide and that made all the difference in the world. There are not signs posted at the dangerous spots. The locals tie leaves up to warn each other and this was pointed out by our guide John. It was great.

You travel through forest to get to the crater bottom and walk along cracked rock (If you can do stairs, you can do this). Lots of good photo ops and sights to see.

This hike is moderate...be sure to bring hiking shoes and trekking poles...there are stairs that can be slippery. This hike begins above the crater and goes through the forest with several views of the volcano below. Then you work your way down to the crater. Stop and appreciate what you are doing...it's hard to understand that you are walking over... More

Great 4 mile hike. Worth trying if you have limited time. One of the most unique National Parks in the system. Very nice rangers to help.

We took Kilauea Iki hiking trail in January 1, 2017. We parked our rented car at the parking lot near the Thurston Lava Tubes, so we can visit both Thurston Lava Tubes and Lava lake together. It took us 2 hours to finish hiking trails, we prepared ourselves with water bottles, bug spray, sun screen, hats, umbrellas and good quality hiking... More
