I hiked out to the north Petrified Forest with my 1.5 year old son in a backpack carrier. On the hike in, we saw a bison and a feral horse. We stopped at the Petrified Forest for 45 minutes or so. There was a nice flat spot for my son play. When we were stopped a prairie hare approached us... More

Traveling back east and we were pleasantly surprised that the park was right off the interstate. We took a detour and added a visit to the park where we were not disappointed. Great views including beautiful fall colors and lots of wildlife sightings. Did the loop and only was at the park for 2 hours, but wanted to stay longer.... More

Did a quick hike to the north petrified forest (about 4 miles round trip). The drive to the trail head was 6 miles on a dirt round and through cattle pastures, had to maneuver around cows on the road at times. There was plenty of parking at the trail head and the trail is pretty flat with only a couple... More

This is a nice loop. I preferred hiking through other sections of the park as the views don't change much during large sections of this loop. We did see a lot of Bison which was good and bad since we had to detour off the trail twice to avoid the herds. We also saw wild horses and in the distance... More

A couple tour books made it sound like one would have to do a full day hike to see the Petrified Forest. The full loop is a long hike (and I wish we'd had time to hike the entire loop!) but you can do a shorter, easy hike here to see the impressive petrified wood. Some of the tours books... More

We enjoyed visiting The Petrified Forest National Park. The look out views were beautiful. We enjoyed visiting the old hotel and learning of the history. Learning about the petrified wood was interesting for the entire family. I recommend watching the short film at the visitor station prior to entering the park. Our daughter enjoyed the activities for becoming a Jr.... More

We parked at the west end entrance - easy to find, the ranger will tell you the exit from the interstate and then follow the signs. Saw pronghorns along the dirt road. We hiked it clockwise. This hike goes out a 1/2 mile and then makes a loop. The first 3 miles takes you through the petrified wood and and... More

Spouse and I had a terrific time on this trail. We only saw 2 other people on a pretty fall day. We accessed the trail from the private gravel road that skirted the park. The road is decent and passable for all cars, but take it easy as too much speed will equate to significant bumps (and maybe bruises) to... More

There are signs at the beginning to the Petrified Forest loop that warn you about how tough it is. We thought we were prepared, but were not. We took the south fork to loop back around. The beginning of the trail takes you through some petrified wood and some badland hills. It's not too bad. Then you come out on... More

There seem to be two ways to get to the Petrified Forest Loop: you can either hike from the Eastern parts of the park to the loop, or drive to the isolated Western location. Like many others, being short on time I chose to drive. Be sure to get directions/instructions on the trail-head location in this area; you can make... More
