We were so amazed at the Checkerboard Mesa that, even on a cold and rainy day, we had to stop and stare. It's hard to believe your eyes, this is such an amazing sight. We would have liked to get out of the car and get a little closer, but the weather wouldn't allow it. So we'll definitely be back!

One of the most well-known attractions along the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway is the Checkerboard Mesa. The majestic criss-crossed mountain appeared as a massive hill towering 900 feet (274 meters) above the highway and resembles a giant, extended chess or checkerboard. The vertical and horizontal fissures are more evident on the north side of the mesa. The left to right deep... More

Easy access to this feature of Zion National Park. You can pull over and park in an area specifically for that purpose. No issues with parking. An easy walk just off the road.

.........knows how this pattern was formed - the name fits what you see! Worth the "pull over" and see this formation!

When you take the Zion scenic drive to Bryce or coming from Bryce to Zion NP you will pass the Checkerboard Mesa and it is worth to stop and take in the beautiful view and even see some wildlife.

When approaching Zion NP from the east, Checkerboard Mesa is one of the first things you will see. The mesa is named after the interesting pattern of cracks in its rock surface.

This is a get out of the car and admire site... there is a designated parking and viewing area for the geological feature ... worth the stop ... If you are coming in from the east, you have not seen anything yet ... take it all in

Checkerboard Mesa is a pretty cool sight to see as you're driving down the road. There's not much to do there except admire the nice terrain and take pictures. My family and I went to Zion for 2 days. The first day had very nice weather, but suddenly it started snowing the second day. The Checkerboard Mesa looks quite cool... More

Checkerboard Mesa sits at Zion's east entrance and is the king of the Park's east mesas. Try to visit either early or late in the day to see its striations in their best light. Desert big horn sheep are often on the rocks nearby the roadway.
