Top ways to experience The Lin Family Mansion and Garden and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Banqiao / Zhonghe / Yonghe District
Banqiao district is the center of administration, shopping and transportation of New Taipei City, encompassing shopping, tasting local snacks, and experiencing traditional and night markets. Here is also the first choice of Christmas celebration in Taiwan- Christmasland in New Taipei City. Within this modern complex, a garden architecture full of Chinese tradition “the Lin Family Mansion and Garden” is hidden, complete with attics, pavilions and artificial mountains and fountains. Zhonghe and Yonghe not only have world class soybean milk, but also have places with a rather artistic lifestyle. Near MRT Yongan Market Station, there is the only old document repair book hospital in Taiwan - the National Taiwan Library Book Hospital bookbinding room. It has been here since Taisho year 4 of the Japanese occupation, which is extremely rare! In addition, the tiny crisscrossing streets of these two cultural districts still holds many interesting bookstores waiting for your discovery.

The Lin Family Mansion and Garden is a remnant of the days when Taiwan was an agrarian society. The Lin family were great land owners, with a mansion to match. These days, it's a bit rundown, but a major reconstruction effort is underway. The ponds and gardens are pretty, and the bookshop has some attractive souvenirs. By the way, you must wait an hour for the guided tour, as numbers are limited. The Mansion is about a 15 minute walk from the Banqiao MRT station.

This mansion is a remnant of days gone by, when the Lin family was one of the wealthiest families in Taiwan. The buildings are impressive, but visitors unfamiliar with Chinese gardens may be disappointed. Chinese gardens rarely have flowers, instead they have arrangements of rocks and trees. During the years of Kuomintang ascendancy, the Lin's obstinate refusal to collaborate with the Japanese colonialists was hailed as a victory for the people of Taiwan. The Lin family mansion is Banqiao, it is quite easy to get to.

The mansion and garden were built imitating the Suzhou garden. Tracing back to 1847, it was founded by the wealthy Taiwanese businessman Lin Pinghou 林平侯.

Among his five sons , Lin Guohua 林國華(Business entitle: Ben 商號: 本記) and Lin Guofang 林國芳 (Business entitle: Yuan 商號: 源記) were the most successful. Lin's family take "Ben" and "Yuan " as their general name.
So, Lin Ben-Yuan is not a person, it is the name of the Lin's family.

There are pavilions, studies, stage, rockery, pool and garden. The landscape and scenery is stunning. Of course, if you have visited gardens in Suzhou, you can skip this site.

The Lin Family Mansion and Garden is located in Banqiao, New Taipei City. It is among the best preserved of the grand mansions from the Japanese era (1895-1945). The Mansion and Garden were established in 1847. The Lins were landlords and grain merchants. The garden is among the best preserved traditional Chinese gardens in Taiwan. The ponds are a special feature, as are the giant banyan trees, said to bring good luck.

The Lins were once the richest family in Taiwan. They opposed the Japanese occupation of Taiwan; it was a brave but ultimately futile guesture. All that remains of the Lins' vast wealth is this mansion and the garden. It is a Chinese style garden; it may not be particulaly appealing to Westerners.

The Japanese occupied Taiwan from 1895 to 1945. The Lin family opposed Japanese rule. They were once the wealthiest family in Taiwan. Now all that remains is this superb collection of gardens and buildings in Banqiao. Other families prospered under Japanese rule and became immensely rich.

Visitors who have read "The Garden of the Finzi-Continis" will gain some impression of what the luxurious Lin Family Garden must have been like during its hay-day. The Lins were the richest family in Taiwan; the were ostracised for opposing Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945. Opposing the Japanese was brave, but it was an ultimately futile gesture. All that remains is the mansion and the park.

This garden is beautiful than the pictures that I uploaded. If you look around slowly it will take about 40mins. I went there on my last day. If your flight is around 2~4 PM and you don’t really have a morning plan, I recommend visiting here.

Just a few minutes walk from the Bannan Station, the Lin Family Mansion and Garden is a taste of 19th century Chinese splendor. At $80NTD to enter, it is a pleasant place to while away an hour or so and escape the bustle of the city. There is a market area outside the walls on one side of the grounds, which is also interesting. Inside the walls, you can get a sense of the lives of scholarly families of means. The gardens are dotted with ponds and nooks. Covered passageways and winding paths connect all parts of the mansion and the peaceful, serene gardens.
