About
Experience the green paradise At the foot of the Bernese High Alps lies a paradise waiting to be discovered: Tropenhaus Frutigen. The mountain water, the fish farming and the tropical garden – a harmonious trio under one roof with three times the appeal, along with an innovative energy concept. The tropical atmosphere, fish farming and alpine setting form a unique combination world-wide. For example, it relies upon closed, resource-efficient material cycles and renewable energies. It reminds us that where it stands today once stood a tropical climate: 250 to 300 million years ago dinosaurs also lived here among the fish: the sturgeon that are bred in Tropenhaus Frutigen. "How the fish came to the mountain": the new permanent exhibition The new permanent exhibition at Tropenhaus Frutigen takes young and old visitors on a surprising journey of discovery. Sturgeon and caviar: the stars in the Restaurant Tropengarten The Restaurant Tropengarten is inspired on a daily basis by the high-quality products from fish and caviar farming and the abundance of fruits and spices from the tropical garden. They are the stars that the kitchen chefs passionately combine with seasonal – usually re-gional – products. The special atmosphere in the restaurant amidst the tropical plants is captivating, as is the cuisine – mouth-watering delicacies that make visitors feel as though they are actually in the tropics.

Don’t get me wrong. A beautiful tropical garden area where they grow their own produce and spices as well as some sturgeon displays and tortoises. However this part is all free! I do not understand why they charge for the other tour which is fish tanks and tons of boards to read. Luckily only a 10 minute train ride from Spiez but would not advise paying for the tour

We were touring lake Thun and planned a visit around lunchtime. You can enjoy the glasshouses and museum (if you like caviar and sturgeon). One cool thing, apart from the fact that the greenhouses are heated using the hot water from the Lötschberg tunnel, is that they harvest the berries and fruits from the plants and use them in their restaurant or to prepare jams and teas for their shop. That’s why a stop around lunchtime is a good tip, you can look around and eat under avocados and papaya trees. You can even buy some plants as well.

This was our third time in the Tropenhaus, and again it was absolutely magnificent. We went with 2 families this time and decided to book the guided tour. Our guide Verena Shaff (hope we spell her name right) was absolutely amazing! She entertained and educated 5 kids for almost 2 hours. She had loads of interesting facts for the kids and always answered their questions in a fun and clear way. She really made our day.
We would highly recommend the Tropenhaus to everyone as well as the guided tour.

At a time when tourism rates are deplorably low all over, it is rejoycing to see that somme businesses can afford to remain closed 2 days a week....

We took an organized tour there recently, my husband's club, that is, with me along. Before the guided tour we had a drink at the restaurant which nestled neatly in the interior, thus surrounded by lush and verdant greenery of he eponymous tropical plants. Then we had the tour about the sturgeoan and the caviar ... well, admittedly, caviar is not my thing, I hate the stuff. We were shown the different tanks with differnt age and size sturgeon, learned about the fish as such, its life and habits and properties and all ... and very much of the info carried the only very thinly veiled sub-message between the lines "And plese leave a fortune in the gift shop" ... there are myriad pictures and explanatory boards, so the tour is not really a must, take a self-guided tour. My husband did enter the gift shop and picked up the smallest can of caviar - we're talking SMALL here - and put it back faster than greased lightning when he saw the price tag - 100 bucks for one good gulp.
Meanwhile I had the chance to do what I'd wanted from the start, roam the tropical area. Not that this involves much roaming, it's a very small area, albeit with interesting plants well displayed. As for fauna: a few tortoises, a couple guinea hens or something, the ubiquitous intruding sparrows ... on the whole the place is well made and kept bright and clean, but I was somewhat underwhelmed. I wouldn't deem it worth a long trip just for that if you're not in the area anyway. But kudos for the effort they put into building this place to make good use of the warm water that started spouting from the ground when some major construction project was started - hence the sturgeon ...

Our society organised a visit to the Tropenhaus for our 35th anniversary. We visited with 110 people. The Tropenhaus team put up a very good program and are clearly professionals. We were greeted with an apero and took part in a small workshop to make our own caviar-salt mix. Then we had a 1-hour tour through the tropical gardens and our guide told us many interesting facts about many of the plants there. She then went on to explain why there is a tropical garden in the alps in the first place. Also, the tour through the sturgeon fish farm was very interesting. We rounded off the visit with a truly remarkable meal! Compliments to the Chef.

During the tour I saw many exhibitions for children, I am sure that they have a good program.

Will definitely visit again privately to spend more time to learn about the tropical plants and sturgeon and sample the menu of course.

On behalf of the SGMS, many thanks to the team at Tropenhaus Frutigen

Tropenhaus doesn't only offer delicious food, exotic home grown fruit and caviar but also a tropical garden with beautiful flowers and plants as well as informations about how our existence began, and what we could do to keep our world a place for us.

We were so impressed with the chef who after being told by the waitress that my nephew was both gluten and egg intolerant, came to our table and helped choose a suitable meal... We started with the caviar and gluten free bread was provided. The meal was excellent and high praise to both the waitress and the chef Martin Strechle for their total professionalism
