We felt very comfortable traveling around the island and stopping along the way to chat with the locals. There are lots of things to do - an art gallery in Esquipula, a unique hiking trail in Santo Domingo, the river in Balgue, prehistoric petroglyphs which...More

Taking a car to Isla Ometepe on the ferry is an adventure itself but we loved having the freedom to roam around this interesting island. If you like remoteness, adventure, beaches, tropical birds, and the unexpected, this is the place for you.

Not so easy to get to, somewhat difficult to get around, but worth the effort. We were on the island for 6 nights and 7 days and greatly enjoyed it. We could have stayed on Ometepe for 4 days and been fine, but you won't...More

Ometepe is nothing like any other. It is beautiful and full of amazing sights. It is challenging but the experience far surpasses each challenge. From the hike to the wasserfall on maderas to the petryoglyphs on horseback you will forever be amazed

The island is beautiful and quiet. The people are friendly, and the children beautiful. It is a pleasant place to be.

Day one we hike the Concepcion volcano--it is arduous, hot and humid. The hike requires a guide-we suggest Elmer who is at the Dulce Mar restaurant. Have hiking boots-it is 45 degrees up one mile on lava/rock-takes about 8-9 hours to go all the way....More

Travel back in time to an era when life was more simple. Laid back atmosphere, spectacular views everywhere you turn. Unspoiled by big tourism. Great swimming spots, hicking trails, limitless options for excursions. I'm done with climbing volcanoes, but if that's your thing, you will...More

It is possible, but it would make for a long and rushed day, as others suggested. My family and I hired a driver to take us to the ferry. Because we were on Ometepe for several days, we did not hire a guide. Ometepe... More

I am so sorry for the delay I hope I didn't miss you! If you hike volcano maderas you are in the JUNGLE. It doesn't get more up close and authentic than that!
