This was a great activity in Rarotonga and really should not be missed. The passion of the hosts for local culture and sharing of knowledge is unbeatable.
Would be a great family activity too (we went as a couple). From preparing an umu from scratch (and later eating the results, preparing and eating local Ika Mata (again from scratch starting with the whole tuna) weaving our own baskets to eat the food with, coconut husking and preparation, stories, excellent music from a local group and then to top it off with an excellent fireshow with even a 5 year old fire twirling exhibitor.
It's great value, the fee includes all entertainment and activities from 3pm until about 8.00pm,, the fireshow, food and a cultural experience which is not commercialised like many are. Support local business!!!
Really glad we did this and do not miss this activity while in Raro!!!
Thanks to the hosts for a great night:)

We did the Friday afternon/evening experience with Tumutoa Tours. My mother is 88yrs & has a walker. Ngamea & his wife are such amazing people, who made sure that Mum got special treatment from when we arrived to make sure she had a comfortable seat throughout the whole time. Words cant express how thankful we are!
Tumtoa Tours is the full package of a traditional experience from preparing our own food for Umu (traditional inground cooking) to making raw fish with coconut cream that we husked ourselves. History stories of the Island, Songs with Ukelele & interactive dancing. As a group, this interactive experience is one of a kind where you get to weave your own plate, husk a coconut & other fun activities. Ngamea also climbs the Coconut Tree which was amazing, with all the men in the group having a go as well. As you can imagine, it was a fun time for all. Never a dull moment with this couple who are a locally own business, so supporting the locals & having a great night was a no brainer. I cant forget to mention the amazing Fire Show which completed the night that was right infront of us & we had the opportunity to give it a go as well! 5 stars from us & we thoroughly recommend this to everyone! Mataki Tumutoa Tours! We will be back again!

We booked for the Umu, String Band and Fire show tour. The husband and wife leading the tour were so genuinely friendly and lovely. I booked online and was given the option to pay for our booking at the Sunday Punanga Nui Market.
Instructions for the tour were great. It was a long night as this tour involved a lot of activities. A welcome, choosing warriors, Umu food preparation, coconut husking, coconut grating, traditional cook island dances, story telling, eating and the fire show. It was a full on tour - my 5 year old got tired. It was a great tour to try all that I have mentioned above. The food was absolutely delicious. I have not had umu or a hangi before. The meat was so tender and it was all flavourful. The ika mata is always a winner - more so as it were prepared by us. The fire show was amazing. There was a 5 year old involved - the same age as my son. We were highly impressed. The hosts were great as they regularly checked in on us and encouraging us to have a go at the activities. My husband tried the coconut husking, my mother in law tried the coconut grating, everyone got involved in the traditional dances, and my mother in law tried the fire dance as well. It was a great experience for a family who have never visited Rarotonga before. Thank you so much for the experience.

We done the umu experience and it was great.

The hosts were amazing, the food was amazing, the show was amazing, the fire show was incredible (we had the young up and comers for the fire show and I reckon they would give the pros a run for their money)

Couldn’t recommend doing this enough, the food was awesome, learning how to make ika mata was a BIG plus.

Selfless hosts that are caring and want to teach absolutely everyone as much as they can.

We brought our kids to see the fire show and received an evening of entertainment that far exceeded expectations. Our amazing hosts welcomed us, walked us through preparing an uma, fresh ika mata and husking coconuts before we got to enjoy the amazing meal. Great music and entertainment. The fire show was the perfect finale but don't just go for this, the whole experience is phenomenal.

Great evening doing the Umu experience with Ngame at his home. Lots of hands on activities such as preparing the umu, making ika mata all the way from husking the coconut, flax baskets and finally the big feast. Even though both his wife and his assistant were away at the time, Ngame still did a great job of keeping everyone engaged and entertained. The tour does run on island time a bit so pack snacks if you have young kids like we did as it was closer to 8pm before we started eating. Meitaki Tumutoa Tours!

Fabulous island experience. Warm, friendly hosts made us feel like part of their family. A great night of laughter, learning, entertainment and delicious food in a lovely intimate home setting, suitable for any age group. We would definately recommend this as a 'must do' on your visit to Rarotonga.

Such a great eperience! I had never tasted kai from an umu before and it was beautiful. Everything cooked beautifully, raw fish, different meats, taro, kumara and more. The food was divine. A few highlights were definitely the weaving or making of our own dinner plates. The coconut show was a hit. Learning how to husk coconuts, how to break open the coconut and how to shred the coconut. Such an awesome experience. The hosts were very welcoming and hospitable :) Lovely experience, I will take my family and friends back there :)

Great experience. The hosts were lovely. We were lucky enough to be part of a small group so it felt like we had just joined a family get-together. Mānia and Ngame, along with their lovely crew, go through great lengths to make sure everyone gets an amazing experience and put on a great show, including the string band and fire show that follows the dinner you help cook.
Highly recommended if you want an intimate experience, away from the larger commercial operators.

Absolutely incredible experience with Tumutoa Tours. This is my second visit to Rarotonga and of all the tours and sights I’ve been to, this one tops the cake by a mile! If you’re wanting an authentic, traditional experience - you MUST do the umu feast, string band and fire show - at the very least!
Thank you Ngame and Mānia for a beautiful evening
