This museum is an important destination to understand the historic significance of whaling in the Azores and the connection between Azores and Massachusetts. It is converted from the original processing building at the top of the large ramp where they used to hoist up the...More

The museum is directly across the street from Hotel Das Flores. It vividly displays the importance of the whaling industry to the island where it thrived for many years prior to the ban on whale hunting in the 80's. The industry, with its specialized equipment,...More

The museum is really interesting. You can actually understand what for a work was the capture and the working out of the whales. It is sad to learn how many whales were captured and how brutally they were catched through harpoons and ropes, but also...More

Most likely you're not a fan of whaling for any number of reasons, but there's no denying that it took place in the Azores. The museum offers an explanation of how, when, and where the whales were captured and killed. It also makes clear that...More

Learned quite a bit about the history of whaling in this museum. It's very informative. After the visit it's a great idea to walk down to the ocean. Beautiful views of Corvo island.

If it were not so remote, this museum could serve the same function as the old sardine canning factory in Monterey, California. It has all the old machinery in original location, beautifully restored, with stories told on posters and signs. Interesting videos explain the industry,...More

If you can put aside your aversion to anything to do with whaling and cast your mind back to the late 1800s and appreciate this for what it was, as we did, then you will enjoy this Museum. A very well put together history of...More

A surprisingly modern museum for such a small island. It is housed in a former whale factory. Nice overview of the whaling industry. It is very well laid out and the exhibits are informative. Includes a kids area.
