- shedeeGold Coast, Australia238 contributionsFor the Local...This is mainly for the locals as the place didn't look like it was well maintained and they have left it as it is. Good job on the various explanatory boards to give visitors some context and history. Felt this place was over-hyped for tourism. It's affordable and a pleasant way to spend an evening.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 December 2023
- Elsie LSingapore, Singapore16 contributionsTrue LoveKellie's Castle, full of history, and deep in love. So much things to learn of this man who loves his family and the place. I was with friends from Hong Kong and therefore, I interpreted in Cantonese to them at every place in this castle. Intrigued to find that he built so many escape route from the building. Worth a visit.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 25 May 2024
- Toru OSetagaya, Japan3,210 contributionsImpressiveA castle once built by the affluent British family. It was never completed and parts of it lay in ruins, especially the building behind the main part of the castle. If you climb to the top, you can get a rewarding view of the surrounding area and nice view of the landscape beyond. There are rumors that the former owner’s ghost roams the corridors at night. Fortunately (or unfortunately?), you won’t be able to see him since the castle will be closed at night.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 13 August 2024

Didn’t enter the place. The entry ticket was RM5, but was stopped just at the entrance because I was carrying a mirrorless camera. The staff insisted that I have to pay RM50 (10x the ticket price) simply for the camera. We requested to take back the ticket, but the staff refused. We left the place without visiting.
Keep your camera in bag before entering the place. I think it’s ridiculous for the additional charge. I didn’t carry tripod or other camera equipment other than a small Fujifilm camera. There is no photography restriction and everyone taking photos there, I don’t see the logic for the charge.

Do include Kellie's Castle in your travel itinerary when in Batu Gajah, Perak or make a side trip to visit this fascinating castle that never was.
Suggest you go equipped with sunscreen, shades, a sun hat and a bottle of drinking water because the castle ruins and castle grounds are almost devoid of any shelter from the sun's intense heat and rays.
Alternatively, you may visit the castle earlier in the morning (opens at 9am) or towards the later part of the afternoon (closes between 5:30pm to 6:00pm) when it's cooler. But this option is not for the faint hearted, just in case the rumours of "hauntings" happen to be true.
My friends and I visited the castle on a very hot and sunny afternoon and managed to walk through all the rooms on every level without any encounters of the scary kind.
On reflection, I don't think I would dare to repeat the same walk-through without the "support" of the bright shining sun! I can imagine it can be a little creepy when it's not so sunny and bright, for instance on a cloudy day...
Tip: Lots of walking and climbing (narrow stairs) involved. Not suitable for the wheelchair-b

Well worth a visit. Hopes weren't the highest beforehand, but the reality was a really lovely surprise. Two separate car parks and a RM10 per person entrance fee and there is a lot to see and get a feel for. Wonderful ruins with nowhere off-limits - including the roof.

Plan to spend there not more than 1,5 hours. Be careful on the rooftop, makes you really dizzy:) We traveled by train from KL, take a taxi from the train station. Rooms are shabby, no furniture, all covered with mould, lower your expectations:)

Quite an interesting castle nestled amids palm oil trees, in the tropics.
Entry RM 5 for Malaysian with MyKad shown, twice for none citizens. RM for parking.
Ambling through the hallways and rooms, experience the owners abode, such history in this place. Get on the roof for some great panoramic view.
Decently maintained, though some repairs rather shoddy carpentery skills.
Quite a good place for some scenic photography.

I went here a decade ago when it was more simple. Now there's a souvenir store, 3D picture, photo and caricature booths, good toilet and parking facilities.
At the basics, this is just a big unfinished building. European visitors might not be impressed. Also it can be quite hot during day time.

Hi! Were planning to visit Malaysia on January 19-21, 2020. We want to visit ipoh, may i ask how many hours ffrom KLIA2 airport going to the Bus station going to IPOH? We will arrive at at around 1am, how many hours would it take going to bus station (for IPOH)
Which is more convenient taking a bus or a train going to Ipoh?
What is the Bus station going to Ipoh or the train station going to Ipoh? Is there an available bus during 2 am or 3 am either bus or train?
Thank you.
Written 11 January 2020
Hello bhengdelr.., I did not use a bus while in Ipoh. We landed at the airport very near the city and it was a 20 min drive by car to the city centre. The train station is pretty much in the city centre. I don't know about the bus station. Try looking at Google maps I think I saw the bus station that way.

how to get to Kellie's Castle from batu gajah station..?
is there bus stop near Batu Gajah Station..?
Written 29 January 2017
yes, taxi is better but you have to first negotiate the price for a return journey.rm40 to rm50 is a fair price. bus is inconvenience n you waste time waiting.Best is to rent a car either from Ipoh or KL ( about rm130 to rm150 per day) n you can see n go to many other exciting places nearby.........Gua Tempurung, Herbal Garden......n other sites in Ipoh. Tq.

Which is the cheapest way to get from ipoh to kellys castle?
Written 8 July 2016
So sorry, am unable to help as I am not from Ipoh! We drove there in our own car. I think you will be able to hire a taxi from Ipoh, and ask it to wait for you, but I don't think that will be cheap. There may be buses, but I would suggest you make sure of the schedules, as otherwise you may be stuck at Kelly's Castle for ages, waiting for bus back to Ipoh.

I want to ask... At kellie castle, is there any tour guide who we can ask anything about the place?
Written 17 June 2016
Nope, they dont provide tour guide. There are some rooms that explains the history. Best you can do is Google & read while walking around the castle.
Written 14 July 2016
not really sure what the dimensions of the building are - but it is pretty big.
its a three storey building (including the roof), and there are a number of large rooms on each floor.
oh, and there is also a basement - but i didn't go down there!
easily walkable, except for the staircase - fairly steep.
Written 16 June 2016
