I was expecting to visit a peaceful, secluded, rural Thai village nestled in a valley but instead found myself walking into Instagram Central. I made the mistake of visiting on a Friday, in the middle of a 5-day long weekend in Thailand. The main attraction of the village, a 150m stretch of narrow road with quaint huts and cottages on both sides was packed with photo-taking tourists, all dressed up and all taking photos in front of the iconic village coffee shop (my guide tells me the hut in which the coffee shop is located has an architectural style typical of the area). The entire stretch of road is lined with cafes and eateries, and the village is dotted with homestays (I learnt that some of these buildings are actually quite new, not repurposed old buildings or shared compounds with villagers). I'm not sure if travelling slightly more than an hour from Chiang Mai to Mae Kampong is worth the trip. And I question why this village, which admittedly has a certain charm, attracts so much interest. I'm sure there are many villages out there which are equally, if not more charming, that are not tourist hotspots. If you really want to visit, try packaging it together with a few other attractions in the area. This shouldn't be the highlight of your day.

Mae kampong is a very small village from the mountain in chaing mai. Some shops/ restaurants on the main street, some are behind the main street. Was there on weekday, not crowded, but not all shop are opened on weekdays. Taking example we want to taste the coffee from one particular coffee shop, unfortunately it was closed. Despite this, most of the shop from main streets are opened.
If you want to feel the mountains vibes or silent, worth to stay there for 1-2 night, many hotel or hostel alone the road. If you never been village in chaing mai, worth to ride an hour ride to get there and stay for 2-3hours. If you’ve been other villages from chaing mai, i will not suggest you to go there.
We’ve tried northern thai sausage, Khao Soi, viewing the village from cafe on the top hill, it’s tasty.
If you going there during weekends, i will suggest you to take public transport or hire a driver to there, due to the road conditions. If you getting there on weekdays, you can consider drive by yourself or hire a driver. We hired a driver for half day by THB 1500 on weekday. Departure at 12nn from old town and arrives back to the town about 16:00.
Hops these info help.

THIS mountain site is a great way to spend a few hours enjoying village life.
There are the usual tourist stalls but there are also local food outlets, little temples tucked away and a large stream which rushes its way through the village.
Mae Kampong is also a noted home stay village where people come to stay a few nights in the homes of local families to experience village life.
When I was there it was fairly busy without being packed and a gentle wander down the main street involved being occasionally wreathed in swirling smoke from where meat or corn on the cob was being cooked.
There is also a small waterfall, various rapids and it is possible to literally go round the back of the main street homes and shops and follow the stream downhill past little shrines.
Be aware that the village has quite a steep slope so a chance to relax with a coffee and just enjoy the setting is a good idea.
If you are in the area then I'd recommend a visit here to enjoy the slower pace of life village style.

If you are looking for a place to travel, I recommend you go to Mae Kampong Village. There is nothing better than traveling to Mae Kampong Village and being in the middle of nature. This town is hidden in the mountains of Thailand and is a peaceful escape from the city life. The last time I went to Mae Kampong, I was amazed by how beautiful it was. You'll hear the peaceful sounds of the stream that runs through the village. The houses in Mae Kampong are traditional Thai-style wooden homes, which add to the village's charm. My experience in Mae Kampong Village was unforgettable. It's a place where you can relax, connect with nature, and experience Thai culture. I highly recommend a visit to this hidden village in the mountains of Thailand.

Great little mountain village where there is something new and great to see on every corner.
Lots of small restaurants - cafes and other options where you can have a meal and enjoy yourself.
Very clean and well-kept by Thai standards.
What is a bit annoying, however, is the traffic on the main road through the town - which is very narrow - so that hardly two cars can pass each other.
Away from the main road there is a lot of nature and botany to discover.
Conclusion: very, very beautiful here - definitely recommended

Coming here to this village, it is like stepping back in time, to my old Kampong in Sembawang, Singapore, in the 1970s when I was a kid.

The village is located on a slope, that mean there is a natural river that run thru it, passing by homes and shops that know how to take advantage of it, by having a coffee shop next to the rivers.

There are plenty of small shops selling knick-knacks, small restaurants and snack shops selling BBQ sausages.

It is a nice place to spend an afternoon wondering around the streets, snacking along the way, have a coffee by the riverside.

This is a marvelous magical village. For those travelers who have experienced fast paced brightly lit anything goes Bangkok and to a lesser extent Chiang Mai this place is filled with sensual delights that will restore your soul.Yes you can go zip-lining or get an amazing massage or even climb up a steep exquisitely beautiful waterfall in this area but its more subtle beauty is the stillness, the soothing ambiance of natural sound. You may hear a motorbike climb the steep road or even a mini bus strain to lift all the tourists up the incline but most of the time it is quiet.it is easy to imagine that all of Thailand was once like this. Most travel was on foot or horseback .moving from place to place was was gradual and very deliberate. There is so much here to discover. If you are one of those people who delight in hidden pleasures and who appreciates incredibly good food, great scenery and wonderfully real authentic people come here. One visit and the memory will stay with you forever.

ARRIVE in this place and you are transported away from a commercial world of banks, shops and roads and into a charming more gentle way of life.
Here in the mountains above Chiang Mai we experienced a wooden village with a little river rushing through it.
Tiny cafes offered a cup of coffee, roadside barbecues wreathed in smoke had fiery sausages and other snacks on offer and everywhere was the sense that you'd somehow stepped out of the real world and into a fairytale.
Our guide parked at the top of the village but we didn't immediately walk down.
Instead she took us through the back of a small parking area where, in a few steps, we were cut off from everything.
We followed her down and up numerous short flights of steps, round the back of people's homes, across wooden balcony areas, over rocks and stepping stones to reach a little temple down by the riverside.
It was so cut off with the jungle just yards away that there was no sense of the village, just a peacefulness broken only by a little waterfall and birdsong. We loved it.
It was a setting I doubt had changed for many years and as we clambered back to the road I wondered how long it could resist the march of modern life.
A little dragon staircase had seen better days but just added to the charm of the place while we loved the houses and buildings on brick or wooden stilts to keep them clear of the river.
Walking down through the village we were tempted by various snacks and bought sausages to eat which were fiery and very tasty, leaving lips throbbing with spice.
There was also chicken and pork on a barbecue where little banana leaf omelette boats were cooking right next to a huge jar of fiery sauce for customers to dip into when they wanted.
You could buy water, fruit juice, fruit and vegetables from pineapples and limes to carrots and onions and, of course, various crafts shops and souvenirs many of which had been clearly hand-made.
This was remote Thai rural life and we didn't see a coach the whole time we were there, hardly surprising as the roads coming in were narrow and twisting with many places only wide enough for one vehicle at a time.
When it came time to leave we took with us some wonderful memories as the first bend in the road swallowed Mae Kampong without trace.
This was a fascinating place to visit and we would recommend anyone to make the time and arrange a visit here. You won't forget it.

It took for about half an hour drive from the Giant Tree to get here at Mae Kampong Village.

What we love about this village is the idea of preserving (some) of their old houses, showing the architectural designs from the past. It’s a good place to escape from the buzzling city.

We went to the top most coffee shop overlooking the village. We had our hot coffee and dark choc brownie. Lovely atmosphere up there and cool breeze too.

Parking seems to be a little problem for us with a private cars, we need to squeeze on the other side of the road.

Tourist number wise, yes it was pretty packed but still enjoyed our strolling up and down the hill checking all those local shops and stores. Local shops selling clothings are not expensive too!

We also enjoyed their local delicacies. Much to enjoy!

Overall, 2 hours is good enough for us to enjoy this little village.
