We stopped at the Anja Reserve as we travelled from Isalo to Setam.
As with all places we picked up a local guide from the small village beside the reserve, however I dont feel the guide contributed a huge amount on this occasion. We went for a fairly short walk around the reserve, it was like walking in a shady / wooded park and I dont think we needed a guide for that. We did see some ringtail lemurs which was positive but they were all sleeping high up in the trees.
After our short walk around the reserve we had lunch at the restaurant by the entrance. One of us had zebu & rice and the other had chicken & rice with pineapple for dessert. With a couple of drinks this came to approx 70,000.

Its a good place to break up a long drive, but I wouldn't make a special effort to get there.

Amazing welcome, Guide very attentive, efficient 'slayers' to find animals upstream (chameleons, birds, water snakes, and lemurs of course! numerous and very easily accessible).
We took the 2h visit, for us that is enough.
This private village park is a spectacular example of perennial collective self-management. Bravo!
And to take everything I prefer a thousand times here than Ranomafana, too factory for me.
We had lunch at the Pension gasy Hasina inside the park (not at the entrance as too expensive by us) it was excellent. However, agree on the Award in advance to avoid disappointments...

The guide was great, with his friends going ahead to locate the different families of lemurs, and we got close to them and some fabby photos. Then I asked if they had giant milipedes there, and they went off and looked for one - they found a small one, with a lot of effort - thank you! Lots of smiles and a great afternoon!

I suppose that is one of your reasons for going to Madagascar, to see these little Kata. Well, Anja consists of several families of up to 50 members (generally there are 1-2 families in a park and with 30 members maximum). The number of families, also very large, in such a small reserve makes seeing the Kata GUARANTEED. In addition, they are very friendly and it is easy to see scenes like the Kata walking on the ground, playing around or getting very close at practically any time of the day. (In other parks during the central hours of the day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. they are usually very busy and that makes those hours not the best to visit the park).

The park offers some great views from the rocks, especially during sunset and you can find a lot of chameleons, but the absolute highlight is the amount of ring-tailed lemurs. There are so many and there is no chance not to find them during your hikes. The tend to come close, but they will not touch you or anything, which makes this is a great place to visit.

This was slightly SOUTH of Finarantsoa, one of the biggest towns in the country. I'd wanted to re-visit Anja for a while and it was fun to discover Andigrinta. Having been to Madagascar so many times before, only the Tsingy of Bemahara and Andigrinta were new to me. I definitely want to stay at Camp Catta again in 2023 for 2 or 3 nights. SO much to see there... Anyone interested in joining me, let me know and I can start planning another cracking (but far less hectic) itinerary. I could also easily spend 3 nights at the Palmarium as it was sooo relaxing there and we could have all happily stayed a bit longer there too. Thanks again Bruno, Fanou, Elisee and our drivers (Hery & Manitra) for ensuring we had the best possible time in spite of countless Covid related challenges.

Lots of ring tailed lemurs that were quite tame. We could have stayed and watched the lemurs for hours. We were able to get quite close to them. The females had lots of babies, so adorable.
The hike was nice, a little bit of rock climbing, so need to be in shape. The views from the top were nice.
Our hotel was quite close to the reserve, which was nice not to have to take a long drive. I appreciated that it is managed by locals, so our park fees and tips went to the local people.
Worth a visit.

It's a small reforested area run by the local community with plenty of ring tailed lemurs that are quite used to people. We were there in October, so we got to see many, many babies.

We visited Anja Parc leading a Swiss group in September 2017. It was a fantastic overall experience, and we have the highest respect of this community project.

Sadly it seems that there is some price scam going on, especially from the guide Marcel that is picking up tourists in Ambalavao or the residence "Varangue Betsileo" and leading them over a back way into the park. He charges an overall "guiding fee" before heading of for the walk, confirming that he will take care of all the entrance / community fee paying on the way - but then he leaves without passing at the park office. Comparing his rate to the official park rates it turned out that it was some "fantasy price".

Please be avare of this, pay your entrance fee only at the official park office and check carefully, that the rates are according to the official price list. Ask for tickets or a receipt to avoid the spreading of corruption or misuse of the money that should reach the community for their social projects.

We knew it existed but hadn't planned a stop here, but when we saw the sign by the road we decided to take the opportunity to see the ring-tailed lemurs. It's directly at the RN7 so you can't miss it and it makes a great stop between Andringitra and Ranomafana. We only stayed for about 2 hours and dedicated our walk to finding and photographing these lemurs and it was really lovely, but it seems that there is a lot more to see if you have more time as well! Our guide and spotter were fantastic and we got some great photo opportunities although we were a little bit late in the day (about 11.30 a.m.) and most of the lemurs were already back up in the trees. We also saw a few chameleons though and were almost run over by a zebu cart, so overall well worth the experience :) They also have a fantastic little gift shop by the exit!
