    Roman History
One of the Roman forts built in Hadrians Wall. There are path’s along Hadrian Wall that you can walk. There are no remaining complete buildings on site, but many outlines of the buildings. There are some panels to read around the site. I recommend a tour guide book to help understand the layout and history. We had a Cream Tea and an Apple torte in the Café.

    Birdoswald Roman Fort review
Came with my daughter on Friday. After driving quite quite some time to get here which is out in the beautiful countryside we parked up to find you had to pay in the carpark. I think after paying for price to get in the carpark should be free. I think the site is beautiful but overpriced at £9.50 for an adult. The carpark was then £4 on top. We only had card payment and we didn’t want to drive to find a cash point and shop to get change as it’s in the middle of nowhere. We walked up to the information center which is an uphill walk and explained this situation and they allowed us to pay by card for parking there and they took our registration number. We were expecting it to be a big site and asked for a map just incase we got lost we were told if we wanted a map we had to buy one and was told we wouldn’t get lost. They were right it’s quite a small site and we were round it within 15/20 minutes £4 for 30 mins parking and £9.50 for a visit of around 15/20 minutes is expensive. We took a couple of photos of the wall. There was a coach load of people also at the site as well as a couple of other families. The coach load of people were climbing all over the wall and talking selfies on the top of it, the wall is around 1902 years old. Why would people do this as it will wear the wall down further and damage it. I didn’t like to see this and thought there should perhaps be signs asking people not to climb on it to help preserve the wall and it’ll hopefully last another 1902 years!

    Fantastic historic site.
We absolutely loved our visit here. Amazing to be able to touch and see over 2000 year old history. There is a car park available for a price if you stay longer than 15 minutes. There is also a cafe, although we didn’t go there.

Very expensive parking but very interesting site
Birdoswald Fort is well worth visiting. However, we took the free tour on offer and it would have been very interesting and enjoyable if we could have heard what our guide and the archaeologists had to say but it was mostly impossible. My point being, there is actually no point in offering a tour if the intended information cannot be heard. Agreed who is leading a tour or speaking to a group should be taught to speak up , speak out and address the group, not to look down at the ground and at times look into the middle distance addressing the horizon a quiet voice. Very kind of any volunteers, but pointless exercise if it’s not done properly.

    Expensive and disappointing
I’m sorry but this was an absolute waste of my £35 for a family ticket . The visitor centre would be ok on a wet day with a couple of bored children there’s lots of Lego to build your own wall fort etc . The Roman remains though are a neither extensive or particularly interesting. We then spent another £35 on two children’s lunch bags 2 sandwiches a coffee and a coke. Both children asked why we had bought them here and I wonder myself. We had hoped to inspire them ready for doing a project on Romans next term at school but think we did the opposite

Good but entry is a tad expensive for what there is
I enjoyed Birdoswald as a stop on my walk of Hadrian's Wall. The museum is small considering the entrance fee, but had a couple of interesting bits and bobs. I liked the video showing the way the wall interacts with the surrounding landscape. The fort itself is less excavated than some of the others along the wall but the signs showing the changes that have been made on this site through history are fascinating. The reception staff were super friendly and helpful. There is a shelter for walkers to leave bags - not secure but out of view of the main area, and the chance to put my bag down to enjoy the museum was much appreciated. Ask staff for directions to the shelter as its a bit hidden. Had an absolutely immense vegan steakless pasty in the cafe as well, just what was required to power the rest of the day's walking.

Visited here with our 6 and 1 year old. The indoor exhibition was presented in an educational and fun way which kept both of the kids entertained. The outdoor signage also kept their attention with the task of finding a Spy in the camp. All the staff were lovely, especially the ladies in the gift shop/entrance.
It is a bit pricey but I felt it was worth it for how long we spent here and compares with similar historical attractions elsewhere in Europe. I enjoyed the visit as it made me realise how little I know about British history and the influence the Romans had which has awoken a desire to learn more, I will be off to my local library when we get home from this wee trip!

We came across Birdoswald on our walk of Hadrian’s Wall. We were greeted by Ruth at the entrance who was so friendly and insightful about the routes we could take along the wall. Her knowledge of the wall and the fort was so interesting that we just had to delve further in. A trip to the gift shop and cafe before our walk saw us buying a wooden sword each (in case we discovered any barbarians along the way) and an EPIC hot chocolate. The walk along the wall was (just as Ruth said) about a mile each way, and was really enjoyable. Thanks to such a friendly member of staff, we discovered an area we otherwise would have missed (we were walking the wrong way when Ruth collared us at the entrance!). So thank you very much to Ruth and English Heritage for the maintenance of such an important historical landmark.

Boards displaying information around the external site were very clear and well laid out. Happily the indoor part of the site was open, this helped put the site in the wider context of Roman Britain.
Staff very helpful and friendly.
We didnt try the cafe, but it was popular with other visitors
From the main car park to the site is uphill, but bluebadge parking is available much closer (on level ground).
Good section of the roman Wall is just outside the site - but please dont walk on top of it!

A review on here by ‘The Beggar of Bray’ sums it up nicely so I won’t add much to it - have a read of his.
Having paid £9 each online you’d think a guide book would be thrown in, but no, that was another £5!
Didn’t visit the cafe, they closed between 14:15 & 14:45 when we’d finished looking at the site, but from all accounts it’s only good for a hot drink. The wall itself is fascinating but this site is sadly lacking. If we return it’ll be just to park up and walk along the wall.

Disappointed to be charged £4 for car parking with no option to pay by card. Not everyone carries about loose change post pandemic! We could have saved our pennies as we chose not to fork out the hefty entrance fee for the museum which from the outside looked rather small and uninteresting. Instead we spent our time enjoying a scone and a cuppa outside the cafe and taking our arthritic dog for a short stroll alongside the Wall.

Wonderful! The small museum/information area you walk through before entering the fort is superb for both adults and children - I thought the Lego area where children can build sections of the wall and fort was a fantastic idea. The fort itself is less well preserved than Housestead’s, and if you plan to see both I would recommend seeing the latter first, as you will then be able to use your gained knowledge & your imagination more at Birdoswald’s to picture the layout. Lots of useful information plaques are also dotted around to give you more detail, but as always the guide book (for purchase in the shop) is the ideal accompaniment. Definitely worth a visit.

I was so disappointed with this fort as the displays catered only for children with everything in a horrible histories style. There was virtually nothing in the way of artefacts and pretty much everything was aimed at children with very little of interest. Apparently you have to go to Tulle house in Carlisle to see anything they dig up and pay again! Clearly you had to buy an expensive guide book to learn anything but as it already cost £12.70 to get in it seemed expensive to have to buy a guide book as well. The shop was full of overpriced stuff for kids that ends in landfill after a day. The wall was clearly the best bit, but as you can see more of it from the road I wish I’d saved my money and viewed it from the road. I learned nothing. Annoyingly you have to pay for the car park too which was another £4. Ridiculous and extremely poor value for money. Ok if you’re a member of English heritage but if you’re not then it’s full price for everything and you then get hassled by the cashiers to join!

The information inside the museum is interesting to read before making your way out to the wall. It's an interesting place to visit and the boards around the walls are informative. I would recommend buying the guide book as this gave us quite a lot more information that was not included on the boards.

Birdoswald is the second Roman encampment I've visited in the Hadrian's Wall vicinty, the other being Corbridge, farther to the West.
Whilst Corbridge offered a splendid museum and an audio guide, Birdoswald presents itself in a very different but equally engaging way.
The museum displays Roman artefacts as you would expect but it also guides you through the history of the fort and of the Roman occupation by means of cartoon-style illustrations. You are engaged by characters from that past, who show you, in a very relatable way, how life was for the people in the area at that time. As I'm sure most people are, I was put in mind of the Horrible Histories books and TV shows. The storytelling is reinforced by a variety of superbly imagined practical activities. All of this is clearly aimed at children but I can assert that adults will enjoy it too.
Outside, amongst the ruins, the theme continues and the visitor is guided from one information point to the next by 'clues', all of which go towards solving the mystery of a spy in the camp. All good fun.
The ruins themselves are mainly at a very low physical level - foundations and low walls - but an interest in history and a little imagination, helped along by the excellent information boards and recordings, bring it all to life.
There is a good gift shop selling quality items related to the site and history in general and a pleasant little cafe serving drinks and snacks.
This fort slightly scores over other sites like Corbridge in that a sizeable and lengthy portion of Hadrian's wall itself runs through the site and over the undulating landscape in both directions. A sight that gives the amateur historian a little chill of excitement.
Fabulous place to visit.

We decided to visit Birdoswald Fort whilst visiting Northumberland on our way to Cumbria. Upon arrival we discovered we had to book in advance but the staff helped us with this and then let us in straight away. The exhibition inside is very detailed but feels a little child like for Adults and the displayed films are informative. Upon exiting the exhibition you find yourself in the well kept remains of the fort which are grass based. This caused some issues in the rain and whilst the rest of the site was accessible the grass and mud made some parts unbearable. Overall I'd recommend the Fort on a nice day.
