- JERSEYGROWN340 contributionsExcellent Preservation under a Giant Tent.Ancient Ruins right in the center of a neighborhood. Can walk from here to the Hypogeum. I took the bus from Valetta and walked to the sight. They need better signage. GPS gets you lost. You download an English and or other language App that tells you the story. It is preserved under a giant canopy right in the center of a neighborhood. Im glad that farmer recognized those rocks and stones were special otherwise it would have been destroyed. A very nice gift shop and many near by places to eat and wander.Visited August 2023Travelled soloWritten 9 October 2023
- KatePnzAuckland, New Zealand68 contributionsBest thing to do in Malta if you're into archeologyThis was the best thing we did on our Malta trip and there was only one other tourist there! You don't have to take a tour. Catch a local bus to Marsaxlokk Harbour, from Valleta Main bus station, and get off halfway there or back. Ask the bus driver which stop you need. Also book the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum (you Must book as places are limited) which is 500 metres along the main road from the temple. Do not book an expensive tour unless you want the information a guide provides. You can read it all yourself. I think it cost about 4 Euros for the Temple and about 15 for the Hypogeum. Both really good value. If you are into archeology, you will be stunned by both places. Don't forget to go to the archeological Museum in Valleta first so you can understand the importance of both places. If you're not into old archeological rocks forget it. These temples are older than the pyramids!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 January 2024
- Twomaples489 contributionsGreat Spot, Combine with HypogeumEasy but convoluted walk from Hypogeum, €4.5 for seniors, initially a calm, quiet respite from the business of Malta. But as you walk along the guided walkway you begin to understand the enormity of the structures on this site, both physically and historically. Covered with a huge fabric fly to protect it from the elements there are several points of interest to stop and read. Well worth the time and fee.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 February 2024
- KMKM57 contributionsvery interesting sitethis site is just a couple miles from the airport- easy to add to your itinerary. It is a well preserved site from about 3500 BC- worth the self guided visit. Get a Malta Pass and you can have free entrance to most sites and museum. It is in a charming old neighborhood from centuries old. The entrance is a little office door-so keep a sharp eye for it. Allow about 30 min to 45 min.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 March 2024
- RyanRossendale, United Kingdom293 contributionsA glimpse of the pastRight in the suburbs lies this archeological find. We came first thing in the morning So we practically had the whole place to ourselves. Toilets are available for use. You can do the whole experience for 15-20 mins. A word of caution: if you’re looking for lower half of the fat lady, she’s not there anymore. They moved her to the National Archeological Museum. The place though is still amazing. This is worth the visit for history buffs. It was an engineering marvel.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 August 2024
- Rhi3173 contributionsA must visit!Brilliant Temples - really worth a visit. Visited twice - once years ago and once this month. If you don't appreciate these then you don't know what you are visiting. You have two sites very close to each other and you can see origins in the museum. We had a guide - booked in advance - they were ok not amazing. You can get good books on this but good to get transport here.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 September 2024

It's really difficult to get my head around the age of this structure - I mean there was just so much going on here so long ago!!! Much of this is in tact to the point where you can easily make out the features. I loved seeing the decorative features still remaining and also the tables and alters within. To see the ruins of a highly developed structure that predates the pyramids is amazing! Loved the fact that it is also undercover so you can really take your time out of the sun.

This was the first temple site I visited in Malta, and I think my favorite still. There is a walkway around the site, and then you can walk on the pathways in the temples. Anything that could be removed was (much of it you can see in the Archaeology Museum in Valletta), but the larger pieces were replaced with replicas. The signage around the site was very informative; there is also an audio guide app you can download that has the same information. There is a permanent canopy erected over the site to protect it - but it also provides shade for the visitors, which was nice.

If you are in Paola, it´s probably because you will visit the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum; they´re birds of a feather.
What to visit first depends on your scheduled visit to the Hypogeum, but I would suggest to visit the Archeological Museum before any of these.
It´s not the oldest or best preserved Megalithic Monument, but it´s easier to reach, being so close to Valletta.
Take your time to wander around the gangways.

Interesting site in easy walk of the Hypogeum so definitely do both. It is well laid out and presented, and definitely very accessible, but we did feel that there was just a bit too much modern restoration and reproduction. It was difficult to find any view without sight of modern mortar or what looked like concrete. It would also be better with some of the finds put on display on site.

Another neolithic site in Malta. Easily accessible by public transport. The site is now protected by a roof and a walkway so you can only take the assigned route. Very interesting structure and artwork although some of this is replicas. The originals are in the museum in Valletta, it would be good if it was clear what was not original. The animal artwork is very good.

Hi! I'm really keen on prehistoric temples and ruins of any kind. I find your comment really teasing so I put Taxiren Tempels as must do. Could You give me any information how to get there from Valeta by public transport if You have done it this way.
Written 24 January 2020
Sorry. Don’t know. We had a car. But they are in the city itself, so there must be buses... Don’t miss the Hypogeum, which is only a few blocks away (you need to reserve online beforehand for it).
If you can get there (maybe take a tour), you would also love the Ggantija Temples on Gozo Island. They are similar to the Tarxien, but in an outdoor setting with no roofing.
You might also want to consider renting a car.
Written 24 January 2020
Hey, i have two options.
I dont know if i should see the Tarxien temple or the Ggantija temple. Wich one is more "amazing" and more worthy to see?
Written 3 May 2018
How long does it take to look around this site? I'm thinking of seeing it after the Hypogeum but don't have masses of time. Thanks.
Written 13 February 2018
Hi, I'm a bit handicapped (Can't walk too far and need to use a cane) and we managed it in under an hour, including some time in the gift shop. It depends a lot on your own interest level, how many pictures you take, etc. but an hour should easily do most people.
Written 13 February 2018
hi is the hypogeum near the Tarxien temple or is nearer Valletta?
Thanks
Written 14 January 2018
If you're talking about the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum (which you probably are: that's the famous and amazing one), then it's a short walk from the Tarxien temples. Neither is walking distance from Valetta: you'll need a bus or a taxi to get from Valetta.
I believe there may be another hypogeum somewhere in Malta, but that's probably not the one you're interested in.
It's well worth visiting the Hypogeum and the Tarxien temples on the same day, as they are so close. Please be aware that you can't just turn up to the Hypogeum and expect to get in: you need to book in advance, and quite probably several months in advance. Tickets are strictly limited.
There is no need to book for the Tarxien temples. Just turn up and have a look round.

Is there an audio guide so that we will understand the site?
How much is it to enter and how long does it take to go round the site?
Written 7 September 2017
Yes there are audio guides in several languages which seem to be accessed via a phone 'app', and you scan codes at each info board. I overheard one from another visitor, and it was just parroting what was on the board. Potentially useful if you're Malti or English speaking, though not sure what languages it's available in.

Buenos días, cuanto se tarda en hacer esta visita los que habéis estado, gracias.
Written 22 May 2017
Yo creo que en 45 minutos está bien vista. Luego ya cada uno puede ser más rápido o más lento dependiendo del interés personal.
Un saludo

Is hypogeum still closed to public? Planning to visit oct 2017.
Written 28 February 2017
Hypogeum was reopened in May/June 2017. We visited in June 2017 having booked tickets online which is strongly recommended that anyone intending to visit should do at least 2 months in advance.
