A great walk to or from St George. Incredible history and stories shared on the videos ... give yourself a lot of time if you like history .. great view .. too bad they are building condos beside it

We are so happy we walked the hilly 20 minute walk from St. George's to see this fort. It is a Bermuda National Park. There is a fee to enter, but well worth the cost. History of British military & Bermuda and scenic views, even the teenager enjoyed this adventure! Public restrooms for paying visitors. No food or drink available in late December, so bring a water bottle and snack, as the only refreshments are back in St. George's. Don't miss this spot!

According to the UNESCO World Heritage website, the fortifications of Bermuda are part of the The Town of St. George designation as a UNESCO site. Fort St. Catherine is only a 5-minute drive from the Town of St. George, and we took a taxi from Kings Square, which was waiting at a taxi stand just outside of the White Horse Pub. When I specifically asked how we would get back to the town, the taxi driver told us to ask the person at the front desk to call us a taxi. So, we enjoyed walking around the fort for about half an hour. The fort has amazing views of the Atlantic and some unique things that we had never seen before. However, when we were ready to leave, the woman at the front desk said that no taxi would come to get us, as taxis are dispatched from all over Bermuda. We were told that it could take between 10 to 20 minutes for the taxi to come and we were asked to wait outside by the parking area, which, because it was the winter, it was VERY windy and cold. After 20 minutes no taxi came and another woman that worked there came out to see if she could assist us. She offered to call a "mini bus", but was unable to reach them. She did call a different taxi line, but, after 20 more minutes, they did not come, and apparently were not coming. She did tell us that she had called the local school bus driver and that he was on his way to pick us up. We were extremely happy to see him, and extremely happy to pay him $20.00 even though he asked for $6.00. We were not happy to see the same taxi drivers that were still sitting outside of the White Horse Pub, including the driver that dropped us off. I particularly wanted to see the Town of St. George because it has a UNESCO World Heritage designation, but I was very disappointed with being stranded at Fort St. Catherine, particularly when the people that work at the fort know that taxi will not come back for tourists.

Of the very large number of forts in Bermuda this must be the one which most clearly explains the development of these forts and how they functioned. Amongst the fascinating and informative exhibits, the underground walk through the magazines, explaining the precautions taken against any sparks, is very interesting. The guns at the fort include some with no relationship to its history as a coast artillery fortification. There is a wealth of information about how the Army functioned in stations such as Bermuda, including the number of soldiers and families lost to disease.
Surprisingly the fort is only open on weekdays. One can gain access on a Saturday (as we did) by taking the 'Defenders of Bermuda' tour. With only four people on the tour we virtually had the place to ourselves. Sean, our guide, was not only well informed, but cheerfully opened a couple of the display cabinets to turn helmets round so that the badge on them was visible.
The small beach on which Sir George Somers landed is right by the fort.
It would be about a 20 minute walk from St Geoege's.

St. Catherine's is on the opposite side of Bermuda from the Dockyard and is closest to St. George's. It has a commanding vantage. If you came to St. George's on a cruise ship, it is the big fort you see on the starboard side before turning into the "cut" and heading into the harbor to dock. St. Catherine's has a most informative display of of artifacts and history. You'll enjoy your time here if you're into forts. Personally, I like this fort better than the Dockyard. I have always found it to be less crowded as it is a long hike from St. George's (a bus, a moped or a hired driver for the day) is the best way to get there. It's worth the effort.

This fort is one of several open on Bermuda, and is well maintained and the exhibits within are clear and concise. The self guided tour takes approx. 1 to 2 hours, or longer if you search out greater details.
It has many nooks and crannies to explore several levels, as well numerous displays of historic and almost modern armaments, also are well thought out dioramas of the workings within side the fort, thus providing a very well documented history of it's existance and use.
This is a must for military history buffs, as well as those looking for some respite from the hot Bermuda sun, as there are cooler places within.
This fort is located a short distance walk from St. Georges, Tobacco bay beach, and up a small incline to reach the entrance.

We stopped at Fort St. Catherine's on a bus tour around Saint George's - which was a great way to gain perspective of the area. The area surrounding the fort is beautifully Bermuda - cozy beaches, slender streets and a golf course set off in the distance. If you enjoy historic forts, this is a great place to visit. Personally, I'm not a huge fort person. It was interesting to follow the narrow pathways into the bowels of the Fort where they had once stored ammunition, provisions and prisoners. The fort still holds examples of cannons, guns, swords and replicas of the crown jewels. It is a great place to learn how Bermuda came to be Bermuda. I particularly enjoyed exploring the top of the Fort which provided beautiful views of the surrounding beaches.

Spent about 90 minutes wandering through the fort and learning about the history of the fort and Bermuda in general. The docent was happy to answer all my questions. History buffs will want to visit this spot.....it’s about a 20 minute walk from St George or 10 minute walk past Tobacco Bay Beach Club

I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this or of it would be worth the 7.00 admission fee but we went anyways. What's going on holidays without touring the island and finding neat places! I was not disappointed! I enjoyed the self guided tour so much and really took my time looking and exploring the fort. Once we got to the top lookout we met Patrick, one of the workers at the fort. Patrick is such a wonderful man who clearly enjoys his job!!! He was so fun and explained a lot about the history and facts about the fort. Honestly you can beat the view from atop of the fort. Patrick also offered us directions on how to get to the nearest bus stop etc. Such a lovely man. Make sure to visit if you are in St.George, it's about a 10min walk from Tobacco Bay

So pleased we rented a Twizzy and drove up to this Fort, it really is worth a visit. Views super and very interesting exhibits, we met with Patrick just as we were leaving and he gave us so much history really interesting. A highlight of St George, a lot of work and money has been put into the restoration. Take the time to support this project you will not be disappointed.

Hi
we will be in Bermuda in a couple of months - on the NCL Pearl - are thinking of taking the ship's excursion - to see the Fort - Do you mind telling us what cruise line you booked YOUR tour with
Thank You

We sailed on Oceania. A choice of shore excursions are included. We chose the scenic tour to St Catherines, Devils Island and enjoyed a nice overview for 2 1/2 hours. I'm sure NCL's is similar.

We will be visiting Bermuda in mid-November, will Fort St. Catherine be open during the off-season? If so, what are the hours of operation? Thank you.
Written 2 May 2018
Hi Lindsay.
The fort is open 10am - 4pm, Monday through Friday. $7 for adults, $3 for children under 15. Children under 5 are free.
75% of the fort area is wheelchair accessible.
A guided lantern tour is held on Thursdays (6pm to 7pm). You are given a lantern to explore the mysterious hallways of the fort, its many treasures, structures and artillery... an awesome experience. $25 per person.
Enjoy!

We are planning to visit St. Georges on May 17th, will Fort St. Catherine's be open?
Written 5 April 2016
YES. It's the height of the season for us so Fort St. Catherine will be open and welcoming you with big smiles. Enjoy the visit.

In the summer months there is a free mini van taking people to St. Catherine's from King Square - across from the Visitor Information Centre. Just ask at the center. It's a long walk. In the heat of summer I would not recommend walking if you are elderly or have very young children. Take a taxi. It's close enough to be inexpensive, but so worth it.
