There are a lot of Duty Free High end shops however I found the area very dirty. I came here 7 years ago to visit on a day trip off my cruise ship it was much cleaner. This time I was very disappointed. Broad Street had a lot of locals begging for money on almost every corner of the street, this is a very touristy area, and apparently during the winter 25 ships come very week drop off passengers. The city should clean up the area to make it more attracting and nicer for the tourists who come here and spend money.

As my boyfriend and I were staying at the Hilton, we took a cab downtown for shopping. The Pelican Craft Center came recommended. When we got there most of the stores werent even open (noon Sat.) and the couple that were didnt have much. The rest of Bridgetown seemed mainly business oriented and we saw very few tourists. My boyfriend bought a few things at the dept store Cave..but I didnt find a thing shopping in Barbados at all. I ended up buying a few things at the airport.

Bridgetown cannot be described as a shopping Mecca. Initially it looks as though it is very run down and very little there. Broad Street itself is mainly jewellery shops admittedly with some beautiful pieces at duty free prices, the side streets do have fruit and veg and grocery shops. There is a department store which caters mainly for tourists on the ground floor with perfume, gifts, rum cake and alcohol on sale with some designers pieces of clothing too. We were looking round when I was approached by a policewoman who in a very friendly manner recommended me to remove the heavy gold chain I always wear round my neck( very sentimental as it belonged to my mother in law). She said there were young men around who would happily snatch it from my neck! An assistant immediately came up and offered me a pouch to put it in. Obviously I took her advice but I must point out that at no time did I feel unsafe in Bridgetown. Everyone we met was very friendly and helpful even the car parking is cheap, they do not overcharge for things like that. If you want more upmarket shopping you need to go to Holetown.

As Bridgetown is the capital of the island, I had fairly high hopes for finding some nice souvenirs of my visit. However, there were very few shops; most were jewellery stores and the one department store had items of a very low quality. I honestly had to check that I was on the right street. I had hoped for local pottery or other craft pieces but was disappointed. A visit to the Pelican Craft Centre was similarly uninspiring. Compared to other island capitals, eg San Juan in Puerto Rico, Bridgetown would do well to improve its shopping experience for the many visitors each year.

I'm a bit confused as to why Broad Street is touted as great shopping. My boyfriend and I were in Barbados at the end of June and took the "shopping shuttle" to Broad Street from the Hilton. From what we could tell, it was more of a business district than anything else. It was cool to walk around, as it is very different than what we're used to. The shopping seemed to be primarily jewelry stores...which yes, my poor boyfriend fell victim to! We bought a gorgeous watch at a great duty-free price! But in terms of a good variety of items in the stores, they were all kind of the same. And there's not a lot of restaurants downtown, other than fast food. Waterfront Cafe is highly recommended, but was closed for renovations when we were there. We ended up finding a small place upstairs on a corner called Ryanne's. The food was good "home cooking" but the service was very slow.

The downtown area is mostly not nice, pretty run down, but that isn't the bad part, I can deal with that. Every 10 seconds as you walk down the street, taxi drivers are hassling you for business; 3,4, 5 all at once, fighting with each other, aggressively hassling you for business. You walk by one of them to go to one store, tell him after he asks you that no, you're not ready yet, and you walk by him 30 seconds later when you decide to go back to where you were, and he asks you again, aggressively, if you're ready yet. It's extremely annoying. Worse yet, the most aggressive beggar I've ever dealt with in my life accosted us on the bridge that you walk across to get to the Cheapside markets and Waterfront café. My wife and I both agreed, Bridgetown is not tourist friendly and we will never go there again, or probably Barbados either.

We have been to many Caribbean islands and shopping in Bridgetown was terrible. Besides the international jewelry stores, these is nothing to speak of. There are no local craft shops in the shopping district.
We wasted two hours trying to find something of interest. We went to the farmers markets and the fish markets along our shopping journey as we searched for some local shops.
Don't wast time shopping in Bridgetown.
We did enjoy shopping in Holetown.

Broad Street is one of the main shopping streets in downtown Bridgetown where the "brand name" stores are located. it is an easy area to manoeuvre in. The street is clean and well laid out with many restaurants there too.

Seems to be a cornerstone of Downtown Bridgetown but really it was not that appealing.
Sure there were a lot of stores but overall it had a rundown feeling and my gosh we were badgered about “do you need a taxi” on every street corner or by a guy trying to con us into buying jewelry .
Obviously, the street was full of tourists… probably getting their first taste of the downtown too… I wonder will they go back to that street.. we will not!

Nothing that great, not really what I was expecting. Some malls and high end stores, some places to eat. I was looking for more local handmade items to purchase, this was not the place for that. The sights around this area is what makes it worth visiting
