About
Kensington Oval is Barbados’ oldest cricket ground having been established in 1882 when Pickwick Cricket Club leased 4 acres of pasture land from Kensington Plantation and started to develop it as a cricket ground with a clubhouse. In 1914 the Barbados Cricket Committee the forerunner of current Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) bought the Oval but continued to allow Pickwick to lease the ground until 2004. With significant investment from the BCA the ground was expanded and upgraded over the years and by 2004 had grown to just over 7 acres.

Fo those interested in cricket and especially the rich heritage of West Indian cricket a visit to the Kensington Oval - the mecca for the Caribbean cricket community - must be top of one's priorities. Guided tours are available at a very reasonable cost where one can walk the hallowed ground once occupied by the titans of the sport. To stand near the crease once occupied by Sir Garfield Sobers, Frank Worrell, Desmond Haynes and Gorden Greenidge is quite sobering. The ground has a very futuristic main stand with other stands dedicated to different Barbadian individuals. For me it was a wonderful experience and one that should be taken for every visiting cricket fan.

Attended my first ever cricket match when I received an invitation from Andre Harding to enjoy Barbados hospitality at its best when England visited Barbados last month for the Test Match against West Indies. Highlight of the day was being introduced to the legendary Sir Garfield Sobers..
The Hospitality Suite was excellent - good service - good food and convivial company. Recommend a visit - worthwhile

The Oval offers scheduled tours at a very reasonable price. ($20 bds each when we went). They have a website listing their opening times and event schedules, if you're lucky you might even be able to score some seats. We got to see some members of the Barbados Cricket Team practicing in the nets. I was surprised to discover that the history and magnificence of a "match day" can be felt even whilst completely empty. A lovely lady gave us a tour and made our visit one of a kind. It's worth a look if you're a sports nut. I love that Cricket unites people from all over the world. Thank you for a lovely time. I know wherever they play I will be cheering for the West Indies.
Could be a great place to propose!

Iconic ground benefited from the recent World Cup which got some facilities upgraded for example the toilets are as good as any sporting ground I have been to. The atmosphere in the stadium is great but be careful to choose where you sit. There is a “beach area” which gets a lot of TV coverage and is all about having lots of fun (maybe at some expense to watching the cricket). The Hewitt and Inness stand is almost in line with the wicket and where many of the barmy army were sitting. Great stand but gets a lot of sun till late and is not sheltered from any rain. The Greenidge and Haynes stand is where a lot of the locals were and is square to the wicket. Front row is great especially around seats 150 where you are in line with the crease and although good sun protection in the afternoon it is open to the rain and the first few rows get water off the roof. If you go back towards row 19 or 20 you get a good higher vantage but miss al the high shots because of the roof of the seats above. Many good seats to choose from just take a careful look where you want to be.
Two negatives. The PA system and the attempt to force some liveliness is a bit much as the PA system is average and the constant need to get the beach crowd gyrating gets repetitive. The main negative is the low quality of food outlets. There is good local food (rice and peas, Mac Pie and so on) but all we could find was burger, hotdog, wings and chips and even this ran out. Improve the food offering, think about the need to over excite the crowd and I think this is about the best ground out there for a day or afternoon cricket.

I am cricket mad and this is a must-do tour. For US$10 you get a 45min tour. You get to sit in the main stand seats and walk on to the pitch by the wicket. No visit to dressing rooms though. My visit to this sporting Mecca was majorly spoiled by the rudest lady tour guide: has been doing it 14 years apparently, and so so rude to basic excited tourist questions and hurried us along at every opportunity. I asked her how many visitors come every year? 'How do you expect me to know that? Why ask me? I just work here from 9am to 3pm daily and people come and go'.

Take your own food - the queues in the Worrell Weekes stand are breathtakingly bad. They don’t prepare food in advance and only cook to order! Then they run out but don’t cross things off the menu board. The icing on the cake is watching them drink beer in between orders and argue amongst themselves. You could make a great comedy show out of it
- on par with Faulty Towers! Bringing my own picnic next Tuesday…….

This is about a 800m walk (1/2 mile) from the centre of Bridgetown and is an easy walk 15-20min walk. L
The tour costs 10 US dollars each and lasts about 45 minutes. There are tours every 30 minutes so there is no need to book, just turn up.
You get to go on the cricket pitch.

England v WI T20. England were shocking. Anyway. Parking on street or for a few bucks with entrepreneurial local businesses. There are no ATMs inside and the bars only take cash. Long queues for warm beer and the food was erhmm .. We were in the 3 WWWs. Save your money and choose a cheaper stand. The party stand looked great ! Good experience being in such an iconic stand but everything else sucked. Arrive early. Long queues to get in.

My partner and I went to the 9.30am tour on the 13th Jan, we were the only people on the tour and I felt we were an inconvenience! My partner is a huge cricket fan and started to ask questions when we got in the lift and the guides response was “watch the film sir” she was completely un-engaging only spoke to tell us which part of the ground we were in! When we were taken into the press room to watch the said film the guide spent half of the time talking on her phone! I think we did see everything which was good to see. At the end we weren’t given an opportunity to ask any questions and we were abruptly marched to the exit gate. A great tour spoilt by an unfriendly guide.

Called in without a reservation and we were on a tour within 15 minutes. Just wonderful and so emotional walking around the stadium and then the pitch. Our guide was a little bit disinterested and removed but the experience is magic.
