What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

After dinner, I walked down a narrowed path but almost turned back until I saw some lights peeking through the small corner, so I continued on and stumbled upon this amazing plaza! In a way, it's a tourist trap, but the drinks were pretty awesome and fairly cheap. Definitely recommend it! Had such a blast sharing a table with a... More

Great place to stroll the streets looking at the buildings. On weekends they have local artsists set up selling their original art. Nice activity to do with family while sightseeing.

This is a wonderful plaza to hang out in for hours. There's plenty of music and food and even a microbrewery with beer towers if that's your jam. There's an awesome little italian restaurant off the northwest corner of the plaza that has writing all over the walls and fantastic live music! Go grab a killer mojito and relax.

After our first lunch in la Plaza Vieja my friends and I decided to only eat meals while listening to live bands. Plaza Vieja is filled with music and all walks of Havana life. Grab a cortado of mojito and relax!

One of my favorites spots in Havana! There are plenty of restaurants and cafes around the area. Just walking around and enjoying the architecture of the buildings around the square is worth the trip. This is a must see!

Part of Old Habana which is now declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Unfortunately the original marble fountain was destroyed some time in the 1930's to make an underground parking lot. The buildings around the square were for the wealthy people back in the colonial times. Now many of the buildings are occupied by art galleries, shops, restaurants.

We met with a local architect,Daniel, who is doing a lot of restoration of the buildings. He gave a lot of information about what still needs to be done and his efforts to date. Buildings he's done so far are beautiful. Walked around the plaza and the vendors were different. Colorful and one sang, with a lovely voice, to sell... More
