Dominican Republic Zoo

Enjoyed this zoo. Children friendly. Take the train around the zoo and see all the animals. Then walk to the areas which are the most interesting to you.

A fun trip to the zoo
Jan 2020 • Family
We had heard many negative reviews but we really enjoyed our visit. The animals seemed content in their large enclosures (as much as any animal would be). The zoo is very wheelchair friendly, and small enough to walk though. The train was very nice and allowed us to see almost everything before embarking on you walk. The main plaza is being redone and will be great when finished. The zoo is old but clean and obviously cared for. Uh

An adventure at the Zoo
Jan 2020
What a great adventure! I took a solo trip to the zoo via the L2 metro from Bosch to Máximo Gomez, then I jumped in a Gaugaug for an additional 10 pesos. The area is very grimy and in the middle of the Barrio, so if your not familiar with this type of neighborhood I would suggest driving there. I planned on taking an Uber back from the zoo but the driver canceled. I’m not sure of the reason but I can imagine that some people would be very intimidated even driving in this area. Overall my experience was wonderful! The people I encountered were kind to me even though it was obvious that I was a tourist and I didn't speak spanish. After spending about 5 hours at the zoo the security guard took me along with her on a ride via a Gauguin to the metro, because she said it was unsafe for me to walk.
The zoo cost 150 pesos for adults, it is safe, fun and full of wildlife and even a white tiger! You can even picnic there with your family, and there are swings and a play area for young children. The zoo is scenic, with views of the mountain and you can take long walks admits the greenery, at times it felt like I was in the middle of the jungle. The Emus were interesting to watch, one in particular would follow you back and forth along its enclosure watching your every move. I would definitely revisit again with my family, friends or on another solo mission!

Visited this zoo since it was inaugurated in 1975/76 until up to 2008.

One of the nicest zoos that I have ever visited. Lots of animals, which are very well taken care of an in spectacular environments. I brought my children to the zoo almost every months during the time I lived there with them (2004-2008). The train ride is the best part of it.

Nice zoo
Dec 2018 • Couples
My wife and I went and we were overall impressed. They have a nice group of felines--lions, tigers, and jaguars. They also have a cassowary, a rare Australian bird. I an giving 4 stars, not 5 because the place is on the small side.

Fun Day at the zoo
Jun 2018 • Friends
We had a good time at the zoo while in Santo Domingo. It is good place to go to spend a couple of hours in tranquility. The zoo’s landscapes are natural and impressive. The animals are in nice enclosures (no cages except birds).
Don’t go there expecting the San Diego Zoo, but enjoy it for what it is.

Make sure you go in the morning since it gets hot during the middle of the day since you will be walking a bit.

Overall I recommend if you want to kill a couple of hours and want a cheap get away.

one of the best zoos in the world
Jan 2018
this is a very large zoo. the enclosures for the animals are hugh and very well laid out. make sure to take the train which is the best way to see the zoo. it is in a dangerous area so make sure you have transportation to and from. The attendants had side arms and shotguns. must see but be safe.

Nice visit to the zoo. Take the train the have so you can take a quick look of the animals. Go with good shoes since they left you at the top of the zoo and you have to walk you’re way down hill and is steep.

Good place for family trip
Aug 2017
The National Zoo is worth the trip with the family. A lot of foreign animals as well as local endangered species.
The kids zoo is well designed and fun. The birds show is really nice. The snake area should be visited.
Take the train tour and stay in one of the stops. Then walk around. Finally take the train back to the entrance.
Do the zip line activity before you leave.

Kids enjoyed it!!!
Jun 2017 • Family
I went to the Zoo with my two boys. They had a great time. You take a train to begin with as it is quite a long walk. At one point they stop and you can get off to explore and they will come and pick you up after around an hour. Everything was in Spanish, but we managed to figure it out. You have to pay extra for the petting zoo, which does not include touching any of the animals, but this was the part my kids enjoyed the most.
Some of the animals look a little rough with fur missing etc., but since I am not an animal expert, this is just my opinion.
This is a small zoo compared to others we have visited, but we did have a great time. You can buy drinks, but only a small place is available with snacks. So I would recommend that you bring your own food.
