About
Altos de Chavon, is an architectural wonder, a 16th century replica of a Mediterranean village perched high above the Chavón River. The village was designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro, and created by Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa. Dominican artisans handcrafted the stone pathways, decorative ironwork, furniture and enchanting buildings, reviving almost forgotten crafts of metal work and stone carving. Under Coppa's direction, each stone was hand cut, each wooden door frame was handcrafted and each wrought-iron detail hand-forged. Construction of the village began in 1976 and the village was inaugurated in 1982 with the concert of Frank Sinatra at the amphitheater. Altos de Chavon was built as a center of culture for the Dominican people.

This is pretty in terms of architecture, but it is overall a bit odd. I paid $25 to get in and my driver was allowed to take me to the cathedral but to leave I had to taxi to the reception/gate (about 7 minutes) and was charged $15 by a driver who almost went off the road on one of the roundabouts. The museum was small but had some good pieces and signs in English. The shops were all fairly small and rather overpriced. I would not say they were traditional Dominican artisan but rather artisan with a Dominican or island theme. Half of the shops are fairly typical souvenir items that were far overpriced. I would not have mad such an effort to go there if I had known what it was.

They wanted 50 dollars (only USA dollars!?! No pesos?!?!) per person and 25 dollars per child to visit this museum 150 dollars to see this little museum. The only reason for that price is to keep Dominicans out… we didn’t pay. Went to Cave of wonders which cost just less than 20 dollars all four of us. Save your money and go there instead. Shame on the owners from keeping Taino historical museum so inaccessible!

This is within a secure area so you have to go through the normal security gate. Approaching the gate there is an office to the right where you can buy tickets to get in, then they will let you though the gate. The it is just a matter of following the signs. There is good parking when you get there.
The amphitheater is renovated to enable it to be used but still retains its old charm. It is not a very large amphitheater by some standards. There are toilets there too.
Just by it is the village with quite a few cafes and restaurants and a small number of shops. It is nice to walk around through the reconstruction but it is not very big and it won’t take long. There is also a very nice view along the river from on high.

This is a re-creation of a historic village in a beautiful location....filled with retail shops and restaurants. It is located in a neighborhood of Dominican millionaires, but it cost you $25 a person for the privilege of shopping and dining at their establishments. Think one small section of Disneyland w/o the rides.

This was my first time to La Romana in DR, and was so excited to go back to Altos de Chavon. That being said, we abruptly found out by the resort we were staying at, that they are fully closed due to covid, and only the guests staying at their resort can access it. I even tried contacting the resort for a day pass or a one night fee, but at $745, it was a no no. Very disappointing as it says "open" on Google, and still can't enter this beautiful site...

The trip to Altos de Chavon was a little longer than we wanted but it was worth it !!
The historical church is beautiful and the museum shows many items during that era .
There is a few local vendors and a chance to get your pic taken with Coca Cola the donkey. We ate at a restaurant there and it was yummy but the views are breathtaking and worth the trip there

Amazing place, hard to believe they built this from scratch. It looks very authentic, with fun shops (amazing cigar store), restaurants (we loved Chilangos), and views of the river. The crown jewel is the 5,000 seat outdoor theatre. Not in use now, but we can imagine rocking concerts here when things get back to normal.

The village of "Altos de Chavón" dates of 1976 and tries to "re-create" a 16th century Mediterranean town. It is today a popular tourist attraction to all those visiting "La Romana" and its awesome marina of "Casa de Campo". The village comprises a cultural center, a small archaeological museum, an amphitheater with 5,000 seats (known for some important historic concerts and shows), restaurants, art galleries and a few shops. At its center, a square, a fountain and a pretty chapel devoted to "San Estanislao de Cracóvia", the Patron Saint of Poland. No wonder, "Altos de Chavón" became a quite famous wedding venue in the Dominican Republic. Bring your cameras! Awesome views of the village and of the iconic "Río Chavón" await your visit. Nevertheless, the village does look quite fake. Enjoy!

I am a little confused by the older reviews here. We went on a trip to Altos de Chavon with Bayahibe Fishing Centre (great company). The boatman dropped us off at the bottom of a flight of steps, and my friend and I simply climbed up to the village. There was a nice security lady at the top who said we had to pay an entry fee, which we happily did. Simples.
My friend loves taking photos and this village is incredibly photogenic. It reminded us a bit of Portmeirion in North Wales! Beautiful buildings, squares, cafes and vistas over the river. Lots of nooks and crannies, and the shops are lovely too. We hadn’t left enough time to explore and were very disappointed to have to head back to the boat.
You need at least two hours there …. Longer if you want to enjoy a coffee, a meal or a proper look at the shops. It’s a great trip out, as a real change from the beaches, lovely though they are.
