Not what it used to be. They don’t sell most of the stuff they grow. You can only buy tiny packets of cloves which was overpriced and in USD which is a sign they are mainly catering to tourists and cruise ships. The tour was very scripted too by a lady whose supposedly been doing it for 22 years that she is so bored of being there

We arrived to find 3 other buses all of which were on the same tour. Must have been over 40 folks some of whom we had to wait for as they used the bathroom facilities. One guide leading a line of people through the gardens on narrow walkway (dirt path) meaning those in back (us) couldn't hear any of the info being provided by the guide. The garden itself appeared to be lacking in maintenance and upkeep including one wooden walkway that was closed off as it was in an advanced state of decay. Would skip this tour if we had to do it over again. This was the consensus of all 6 in our party.

Had a little trouble with transportation, taxi is recommend especially for large groups. Solo travellers can manage with the bus but definitely talk to the bus drivers about where to get picked up after your visit.

Otherwise, this became a surprise highlight of my trip. Tasting fresh spices off the vine or tree or bush, fresh cocoa pods, mangoes and local fruit when in season on Grenadian soil was an amazing experience. It feels like I learned what spices are supposed to taste like!

It’s true - you can smell the spices in the air. Nutmeg and Cinnamon - like Christmas on the breeze. St George’s trades in spices. The cruise terminal has a huge shop. Laura’s garden offers more. The main town offers Georgian architecture, mullioned windows, churches, bunting and a chirpy outlook. Scenic hillside with multi coloured houses nestled in the vegetation. Made an impression. Different with a bit of attitude and style.

This is a must see! Guide will take you around garden and explain what they do there and all the different varieties of trees, plants, herbs, etc. It is really interesting. They have a little gift shop where you can purchase many spices.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. We had a full tour of the gardens and got to try raw cacao, smell the fresh herbs like cinnamon bark, rosemary, bay leaf, etc.
A very educational and informative visit. We found it very interesting.
The toilets need a bit of a makeover as there were only 2 cubicles and 2 urinals (one toilet wouldn’t flush) so obviously big timely queues happened.
The shop was stocked well but expensive.

Laura’s botanical garden which was established by the eponymous lady in 1995 but only opened to public in 1998. We were led by a very knowledgeable guide, Hilda, who was hands on in not only talking but demonstrating, describing and tasting various herbs and plants. The first surprise was breaking open a ripe cocoa pod; the gelatinous ooze surrounding the seeds was delicious to taste – mango, pineapple and guava. Next we tasted several herbs: many different mints, thymes, rosemaries, lemon grass and other we had not previously heard of. Pepper corn tree, climbing vanilla vines which have to be hand pollinated to produce the pods, and nutmeg tree with various stages of nutmeg and mace in development and maturity.

We had a delightful tour of the herb and spice garden smelling a large number of herbs en route. Out guide was really knowledgeable - for example red, green, white and black peppercorns all come from the same plant - they are harvested at different stages of ripeness and then processed differently. You can see vanilla, cocoa, allspice etc growing. Not a long tour but well worth a visit ( and the very hilly road to find the garden).

A gem!
This was part of a cruise ship excursion. While there, a guide accompanied us on the trail. She talked about the various plants grown there, plus let us touch and smell the various herbs and spices.
There is a small gift shop, which can become quickly crowed, but is well worth checking out.

Well worth taking the time to find this superbly set out and well organised spice garden. Our guide was lovely - very knowledgable and answered our barrage of questions (we are farmers!!) with a smile and plant of detail. The little shop is the perfect place to top up your kitchen spices!
