    Barney’s Botanical Garden -Jamaica
Barney’s garden was just beautiful! This has been a labor of love for him for 40 years, he tends it with such care. We toured the garden for an hour, and enjoyed several hummingbird sightings. They even drank from a bottle we held in our hand! The worldwide hummingbird population in on a serious decline, so any glimpse was welcome. Thank you, Barney, it was lovely! 😊💕🌸

    A wonderful place, but expensive
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to barney's hummingbird garden, it was very close to our hotel and as a keen birdwatcher and wildlife photographer it was planned into our itinerary before we arrived in Jamaica. Oneill was very welcoming, and showed us around and answered questions we had, and then left us to wander around. It is very secluded and peaceful with beautiful flowers and greenery, all of which are perfect for hummingbirds. We were lucky enough to see Jamaica's national bird - the red billed streamertail, and even hand fed a couple. As well as seeing birds we also saw a lot of colourful anoles scuttling around the foliage. We were told to leave after an hour which we were surprised by. It is a small garden but we found it quite expensive ($25pp) for just an hours visit. We could have spent a lot more time just sitting watching the birds and enjoying the peacefulness, so it was a shame we had to leave.

    Bird lovers paradise
We were greeted warmly by Damion, a young man who was very knowledgeable about the plants and birds in the garden. It was very clear he wanted to make our experience the best it could be. We spent 1.5 hours photographing birds and flowers. Damion was happy to tell us about the humming birds and other wildlife on the grounds. It was a very relaxed, friendly and enjoyable experience. Highly recommended for nature lovers, bird watchers and photographers.

I rode my bicycle to Barney’s Hummingbird Garden. A young man opened the gate and I asked him how much for entrance. He said it was $20 USD and I shared that I only had $1400 JMD ($10 USD). He said the owner was not in and he could sneak me in and give me a mini-tour. Usual tours were one hour, but he could show me around the property in 30 minutes or until the boss got there. I walked around the gardens and saw a few birds. Lovely. The young man quietly asked me to come to the front door and showed me out. “The boss was coming back and I can't have you in here!” He handed me back the $1,400 JMD. I was confused and handed him $400 for a tip. He literally screamed at me. “What do you expect me to do with this? This is an embarrassment!” I was taken aback, literally stepped back in shock. “Here! Take it all!” I said and pushed another $1,000 JMD into his open greedy hand and walked away. If my JMD was not enough for my entry, then he should have turned me away, but instead, he was looking for a quick buck from an unsuspecting visitor. Shame on you!
The worker was obviously terrified of Barney, he even said so. The employee's demeanor often reflect that of the owner's . So visitor's beware!

I went there with my family this morning at 10 am to a typical Jamaican welcome by the worker there. We asked how much it would cost just to be sure because on the gate it said Jamaican with with National ID would pay 1000 jamaican dollars. Others pay 20 US dollars. The two persons who accompanied me had Euros . We asked the owner Barney how much is it in euros. He said 18 euros per person. I said I am Jamaican and I have National ID to show. He said I didnt live in Jamaica and I would have to pay like the rest. When I refused to comply to unfair demand. He proceeded to curse me. To use his words ' move your bloodkleet'. Especially when he realized te rest of my Company didnt agree with him.
So to my German friend Barney 30 years living in Jamaica has not taught you to be Jamaican. To be Jamaican is an attitude topped with warmth and hospitality. Discrimination is not done here. Travelling to another country hasnt made me less Jamaican nor you less German. You maintain all advantages if you desire to return to your birth country Germany. The same way I do in the land of my birth.
If you want everybody to pay 20US dollars then use that on your websites and advertising but do NOT mislead potential customers and to classify who the Jamaican are or not. Our forefathers and the jamaican government elected by the people of Jamaica already did that!

We found this place online, quite by chance. and we went, without booking, on the off-chance that we could get in.
What a wonderful spot!! This is a hidden oasis of flowering trees and shrubs with its own population of two species of humming birds. With some patience, the birds will come and feed from a bottle in your hand, which is a lovely experience.
If you have an hour to spare while staying in Negril, you must visit this garden - you won't be disappointed.

I would not recommend this garden to anyone. Soon as we stepped in, the owner was very rude and unwelcoming. He asked for the money immediately stating “money makes the world go round”. We paid $25 per person awhich is a waste of money. The pond is dried up, plants are dying and garden furniture broken. Definitely not what you are in these pictures. The garden is small and once we paid, we’re told the hummingbirds don’t come out because it’s too hot. We saw a couple of them but it’s a roll of the dice experience. They may or may not interact. Barney needs to re-invest his money in the business because it’s nothing like the pictures advertised

We booked through Amstar at our resort and they didn't call to make a reservation which annoyed our guide, which I can totally understand. We had 7 people in our group and I managed to see 4 different species. It was amazing and worth the trip and price. Two people out of our group got the hummingbirds to feed from their sugar water. The number of plants there in bloom are incredible and got some great pictures. Hoping that Barney will get the gift shop up and running in the next year so that we can buy merchindise.

Very cost-effective and low impact private tour. Barney arranged transportation to pick us up from our Airbnb, do the tour, get dropped off at Rick's Cafe and picked up again from Rick's Cafe and delivered back to our Airbnb for the same price. We did in fact see and feed the hummingbirds. My wife was so excited to see the hummingbirds up close and personal.

As noted, underwhelming, especially at $25 per person and a round trip taxi an additional $20. It was basically an area of dried up plants, not looking very "gardenly" and a few hummingbirds. The owner is highly interested in the payment, even before an hour was up.

We celebrated our 30th anniversary in Negril and went to Barney's before enjoying a beautiful dinner at Xtabi. While I didn't have luck "hand feeding" the hummingbirds (it seems I scare them away when they get close) but Barney's helper did everything he could to bring them around. He turned on a sprinkler in the middle of the garden and all of the hummingbirds came to bathe - it was FANTASTIC to watch them! The flowers in the garden were also stunning. We definitely need to go back to experience it again! We went in December 2019 but that wasn't an option to select to the "when did you go?" question below.

Mu wife and I were staying at The Cliff Hotel nearby and thought we'd check out Barney's and we're glad we did. What a magical little garden and hummingbird sanctuary Barney has created . . . very cool. Barney and Damian we friendly and knowledgeable and the hummingbird action was good the day we went. My wife was able to "hand-feed" several of the hummingbirds and they were all beautiful. It was a fun way to kill some time "off-resort" and we will probably do it again on our next visit to Negril.

This was the only disappointment during our trip to Jamaica. Not sure how it got such wonderful reviews? Even though someone commented that they thought the $20 entrance fee was steep we ignored it since people raved about it. Well, the entrance fee is now $25 USD per person! We arrived very early and rang the doorbell (it was a little before open time). Barney was not the friendliest man. We got next to no tour of the very small garden. We were left to our own devices after one of his staff gave us a 5 minute tour. We did see some hummingbirds, however we saw them while we were having breakfast a couple of doors down afterwards also. They gave us a little bottle of food for the birds that we walked around with and I did eventually get 2 birds to feed from it for 5 seconds. Barney did say we could come back at 4 and not be charged again since the birds were not active. My daughter and I took our loses and were not going to waste more time. Save your money!
