About
In Cuartel de Ballaja's second floor one of the greatest museums in Puerto Rico holds a space for the diverse cultures of the Americas. Museo de las Americas--founded in 1992 by San Juan's famed and beloved archaeologist Ricardo Alegria--is keen on honoring the traditions, objects, and stories that make up the American continent. This museum boasts four permanent exhibits: a) the Natives in the Americas, b) the African Legacy, c) Conquest and Colonization, and d) the Popular Arts. These carefully curated exhibits put on display a magnificent collection that briefly summarizes the "American experiences" throughout the centuries. Moreover. This gem of curatorial design also hosts Domingos Familiares, which offers workshops and activities for the whole family every Sunday.

- Jet50862059026Liverpool, United Kingdom22 contributionsA museum visit well worth your timeThis museum had two outstanding exhibits. The first was a collection of pieces of a home that was destroyed in 1972. The artist turned doors, shutters, and furniture into beautiful pieces of art. The second exhibit contained tapestry and sculptures telling the story of the capture and voyage of Africans brought to the Caribbean as slaves. Both exhibits were extremely well done.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 December 2023
- GeneralShamuNew York City, New York1,174 contributionsAfternoon VisitCame here on our second visit to Old San Juan as we wanted to see and learn about the history of the island. Very interesting museum though don't understand the severely limited hours. Some exhibitions were under renovation in early December and, it feels like, they will be renovating much of it in the coming months. Try to confirm in advance if the relevant sections for you will be open so you don't end up wasting your time. I'd assume they'll be done in full come July 2024, given the rate they were doing it.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 December 2023
- Kate NWorcester, Massachusetts25 contributionsWorth a visit!!The art exhibits were very interesting! They managed to connect history and art together in a creative but informative fashion. Unfortunately there were a few exhibits that were not open (Colonization and the Spanish and Indigenous Peoples of the Americas) that I was looking forward to viewing. Wouldn’t recommend for young kids, but older may be able to engage in what the museum has to offer. Took us about 1.5 hours for the 3 exhibits. Writing/descriptions of the pieces and history were offered in both English and Spanish.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 4 March 2024
- Mimivfl73New Port Richey, Florida435 contributionsInteresting art museumThis museum is housed on the second floor of a former military barracks, about one block from the fort “El Morro.”Each room houses a different medium of art, related to various aspects of the local culture. The cost of a senior entrance fee is $4 and you get a wristband that allows you to leave and reenter the same day. There are closed for lunch.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 April 2024
- George APhoenix, Arizona266 contributionsGreat art collection, but most galleries closed for renovationAlthough it’s a large, 2-storey building with rooms all around a large central courtyard, only 4 galleries were open, and really what was on display was nothing more than the folk art collection. Although they have vastly narrowed what is on display, this is definitely a museum any art-lover should visit in San Juan, although I would not call it a historical museum. The best gallery showcased the works of one artist who took the wooden shutters off old mansions before they were demolished. He then put fused glass on them to make various designs. It’s really great, and about the only preservation that was done before the mansions were demolished. Another gallery has all kinds of cards on the walls and in cases from a local painter that he sent to his son while he was travelling the world. It’s a brilliant concept, and the gallery contains their correspondence from his son's youth into adulthood. The other two open rooms are more general in nature. There are displays of pottery, native cosutmes, religious stuff and carnival masks. Toss in a bit of history of post-colonial Puerto Rico, and there you have it.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 1 July 2024

Very interesting building with huge courtyard and museum on the second floor. When we visited, only three of the museum exhibits were open; one showed modern art, one old San Juan history and I don't remember what was in the third. At the plaza level, there are restaurants surrounding the plaza. The day we visited, there was also a huge craft fair and live music going on down in the plaza area. One of the funnest activities we did during our week in Old San Juan.

I went here more or less on a whim, but I'm glad I did. The museum is inexpensive and well worth a visit.
While many galleries appeared to be temporarily closed, those that were open did a good job of tracing the history and culture of Puerto Rico. They trace the history from pre-Columbian time through the Spanish conquest and the African influence on the island. There's also a good treatment of modern Puerto Rican culture.
It does appear that the signs have a more thorough treatment of the different topics in Spanish than they do in English, so a working knowledge of the local language was useful.

This museum encompassed the art and history of San Juan and all of PR. It costs $6 to visit and they had five exhibit for you to visit. The first room was full of a variety of art as well as lots of carnival heads. The second was full of mixed media paints of fabric which was by far my favorite of the museum. The art in the next room was very modern and wasn’t my cup of tea. The last two rooms were more historical investigating African art and the other the art and history of PR. I was duly impressed with this place. Everyone who comes to OSJ should visit this place.

In addition to being a history museum there are also a couple of art galleries incorporated into the facility. The art was interesting enough to be worth a look. We found the museum to be much more interesting for its portrayal of history than for its artifacts. The main language of the displays is Spanish. In some areas there are excellent, readable English translations; in other areas there are not. As is, the museum is an excellent resource for local school children, maybe not such a good resource for grownups. A hope for the future is that they will have headsets with multilingual narration.

Great displays and overviews of Latin American history, focusing on Puerto Rico. Plus the setting was charming. They also had three restaurants on site--one coffee shop, an empanada place and a Spanish restaurant. We went to the coffee ship when we needed a rest. We had tea and smoothies. All very good.

Two of the eight exhibit bays were closed in February 2020 due to Hurricane Maria damage. Six were open. A few detailed the history of Puerto Rico. A few displayed art from Caribbean and South American artists, a new genre for me. We went through in 90 minutes. Some exhibits, not all, provided displays in English
Serious coffee shop in the courtyard near the museum.

I am so glad we made our way to this place. Not only is the price very reasonable but it is a great way to give back if you are hear on vacation. Support the local arts and learn about the history of the place you are enjoying. I do appreciate the pre colonial knowledge and ways of being being saved and recorded. The exhibit rooms are also AC’d so that felt like a bonus. The gift shop is really cute and has a lot of local art and wares. Great addition to our honeymoon!

This wonderful gem of a museum is a must-see while in San Juan. Located on the second floor of the former Spanish army barracks, this museum holds a fascinating variety of indigenous, African, European, historical, and contemporary exhibits highlighting Puerto Rico's richly diverse identities. This museum was quiet compared to the other nearby attractions, as I think it's a bit lesser known, but no less informative and fascinating for it. I enjoyed soaking in the various exhibits in a calmer setting, and I learn a lot every time I come here.

If the Museum is Open September 7th 2015 What are the hours that day and is there a fee?
Written 6 September 2015
There is a modest fee, but I am not sure about the hours. Hopefully they have a website that would have the hours.
Written 7 September 2015
They are always closed on Monday's. I would call if you decide to go another day to ensure all their exhibits are open. A few weeks ago most of them were closed.
