About
Much of the land on this new wildlife reserve was once a naval bombing range.

Fabulous beach horrible road to it!
Feb 2020
Great sandy beach very close as the crow flies but far because it takes forever to go the 4+ miles on very bumpy, potholed road, Do not take a golf cart there (even though lots do, it’s pretty dangerous and hot!). The beach has great snorkeling and you can see giant turtles and pretty fish near the huge wreck of something (the wreck is on land but very near the old broken up pier).

A pleasant way to spend the day
Nov 2019
Hubby and I visited La Chiva and Playa Caracas (both reviewed separately) in Vieques National Wildlife Refuge in late November with our dog. We found the snorkeling to be better at Playa Caracas but it had more people than La Chiva (which is much further down). The park closes at 6pm and the gate appears to close automatically so don’t be late! There were many signs along the way indicating the beach locations and warnings/information. We didn’t have any trouble finding the beaches. The road got rough after the pavement ended but was fine with a jeep. There were many garbage cans along the road which helps contribute to the overall cleanliness of the park. We didn’t see many animals along the way other than lizards. Take food/drink with you. Overall, a pleasant way to spend the day and we hope to return one day to explore the other beaches. *Thank you for reading my review! Please click the “thumbs-up” below. :)

Many fabulous beaches!
Oct 2019
No wonder they only rent SUV 4WD vehicles! Tense driving: he dirt roads need many repairs due to gigantic potholes. We drove 15 mph most of the time. But the beaches! Wow! Thank you, US Military, for rehabilitating this beautiful area!! Find your favorite private beach on the E. side, and snorkeling on the W side. Recommended!

Beaches are beautiful. We drove through the animal refuge. I wasn't impressed. I don't think we saw an animal.

If you want a little private beach with a potty, picnic table and sun shelter, it's worth the drive! Simply gorgeous and seemingly undiscovered by most!

So much to explore
Mar 2018 • Family
An amazingly unique area to explore. It's hard to believe that the best use they could find for this place was a bombing range.

Best Beaches in the Caribbean!
Jan 2019 • Couples
This Refuge features the best beaches you can imagine in your wildest dreams. Avoid the crowds, find a quiet beach that has white sands and access to the best snorkeling around. Outstanding sea life to seek out, great for picnics or just sitting under a palm tree reading a book all day. Look up from the pages to marvel at the beauty that surrounds you.

Explore and explore some more!
Jan 2019 • Couples
Rent a jeep and hit the trails. Horses and hidden beaches everywhere. When you first enter...take an immediate right and check out the lighthouse and it’s beach. Beautiful views and amazing breeze. Afterwards, continue as far as you can go and check our Playa La Chiva. During the week you’ll most likely have the beach to yourself. Great swimming and snorkeling. We take the ferry over once a month, rent a jeep for the day, and always go to that beach.

Good Roads
Jun 2018 • Friends
The roads are great and well paved to the beach replete with speed bumps. One has to watch out for the wild horses along the road which is characteristic throughout the island.
