About
Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake Railway) offers a delightful 9 mile return journey alongside Bala Lake, through the beautiful Snowdonia National Park. Our 2ft narrow gauge steam trains give excellent views of the lake amid its surrounding pastoral and woodland scenery, and of the nearby mountains, Arenig Fawr, Aran Benllyn and Aran Fawddwy. The railway provides an ideal centrepiece for a day’s visit to Bala Lake. The round trip of 1 hour can be broken at any of the stations to enjoy other activities - a pleasant 10 minutes walk into Bala town for shopping or merely browsing. There is access to the lake shore at Llangower station for swimming, fishing or simply lazing by the waterside.

    Fantastic time
What a great day out in the glorious sunshine. We were pulled by George 2 today. What a cute little engine. We sat in the open window carriage watching the world go by. There are carriages that have windows in bad weather. George chugged us up the hill through the woodland until the beautiful blue bala lake came into view. The sun was dancing on the water. The lake is huge and there is a spectacular view of the mountains behind. There are a couple of stations on the way to the final stop at the bala station. Where George was uncoupled and moved to the other end of the carriages for the return journey. We got on at the Llanuwchilyn station where the journey starts and ends. If you use the sat nav for directions at the end it tries to send you down a private driveway. Keep going and you'll find the car park. There is a little shop, cafe and toilets there. There is nothing at the Bala stop. Sit on the left side of the carriage for the best views. Well worth a visit. The staff are lovely.

    Steam train adventure
We booked onto this little steam railway, and we're completely blown away from start to finish. We got on at Bala and had an enjoyable trip to the end around 7 miles, where we stopped for half an hour while they moved the engine . Nice cafe to boot whete I had a cup of tea. The journey back was just as good ,the scenery is really good. Turned into a little boy.

    A Must Visit!
I would give this more dots if I could. This is everything you would expect from a narrow gauge railway and more. The staff are all great and very helpful. Although the weather wasn't great it was still an enjoyable ride with some lovely scenery to take in. The journey is about an hour there and back. The station in Llanuwchllyn is brilliant. The shop is probably one of the best we have seen thus far especially for books with a good selection of gift and souvenirs for young and old. The café is superb offering toasties, filled rolls, soup, jacket potatoes and more. I have to give a special mention to the Carrot and Coriander soup! Best I have every tasted. You need to give it a go!! Only downside, and I appreciate they would struggle to fit one in, there is no disabled toilet.

    A lovely little railway
Being steam fans, we came along and bought a return ticket for this little railway. Beautifully maintained engines and friendly volunteers. The Bala station could do without the ugly modern green bus shelter on it - somethig a little more traditional maybe....but as they are fundraising to relocate the station more centrally into the town of Bala this will change. A nice little trip down the side of the lake to the end station at Llanuwchllyn. This station is lovely with traditional buildings, a little museum, and a tea shop but sadly the stop off time of about 30 minutes is not long enough to enjoy all of these. People rush into the cafe and queue it out so you go to the museums, which are a bit of a walk away - and by the time you come back there's not much time to grab a coffee and a cake before you're on your way again. Let the visitors stay a little longer and they would spend more money ;)

    Steam fun.
Steam engine experience for a fun trip. A narrow guage railway with excellent communication from the train enthusiasts that run the business. The smell of the coal-fired engines that are used is quite nostalgic for those 'of a certain age' and create a great atmosphere for remeniscence! Views of the lake are intermittent but acceptable. Best when the weather is good. Unfortunately this cannot be prearranged!

    Lovely afternoon out
We went on the last return trip from Bala of 2023. We had turned up for the middle trip of the day (hadn’t yet purchased our tickets) and whilst at the station I read on the website that prams are not permitted. We had our 8 week old baby so decided to head back into Bala and swap for the carrier and come on a later train. We also decided to leave our dog at home. Really glad we did as this later slot was much quieter and plenty of space. Lovely views and soothing journey. At the other end we had a hot drink before coming back again. Really important to read about the fundraising for the line extension which would add so much to Bala’s town centre and tourism. Worth the £14 per adult.

I wouldn’t waste your money. The views from the train ride itself is the only thing going for it. We went from Bala (not worth a visit) to Llanuwchllyn station. There is nothing at Llanuwchllyn apart from a very dated station cafe. Coffee is served from a little machine in a tiny cafe that looks like something from the 80s. Completely not worth the £43 we spent on the journey, we even had to get the earlier train back than originally booked.

£14 gets you a 50 - 60 minute there and back ride in a wonderfully preserved and refurbished "little" railway along the banks of Lake Bala. The views across the lake are brilliant and the trackside is full of interesting plants & wild flowers. The Bala terminus is a 10 - 15 minute walk away from the centre of Bala but your visit will help pay towards the £3 million project to extend the railway further and into Bala itself.
There is a small tea room and pleasant shop - together with car parking - at the Llanuwchllyn end of the line. The cafe has a range of drinks and tasty tray bakes but £3.50 each for them seems a bit steep, TBH.
