Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We didn't even know there were any asphalt lakes so it was a great experience to explore one. It is an interesting place to visit but even the official guides are a rip-off. The tour took just about 30 mins and we paid TT 100 for each person. There were just two of us and the museum seemed a bit abondoned in these days.

La Brea Pitch Lake is one of only three natural asphalt lakes in the world. They process the pitch in the factory and export it all over the world. It may even be on the roads in your area! Our guide, Cyril Billy, was excellent. There is also a small museum which tells the story of the Lake.

What an experience made special with our official tour guide Neal Langley after the intro from Quincy Joseph. We learned all about this wonder and were able to sample and test things for ourself. No rush and not too long either.

NOTE- park the car and get an official tour guide from inside the compound NOT outside.

A must see, lets face it how many asphelt lakes do you come accross these days, La Brea Pitch lake is situated in the south of the island not too far from San Fernando, Trinidads 2nd largest city, i recommend you to wear shorts, as you would want to walk through the water, to appreciate the surroundings, dont forget the suncream, and water as you are in the open, and remember to take your camera, sadly i left mine in the hotel room sorry!

When you arrive at the turning into the road where the visiteres centre is. BE VERY AWARE OF SCAMMING FAKE GUIDES. If your in a vehicle, they will bang on your window and try and convince you to go the the lake with them. They will charge you nearly $100tt to drive your car down onto the lake, if your from the W.I. They might charge in $40tt-$50tt. Their clever trick after you drive onto the lake is to watch your vehicle sinking into the lake and have the cheek to charge you another $700tt to pull you out, because there are no tractors or any other help to get you out.
After you manage to by pass these people, take your vehicle and yourselves into the main gated area, park up on the right hand side. Make your way to the left side to nice clean toilets and a really warm welcome in the visitors centre, and an honest charge of $30tt and have a proffesional guides who will show you the museam. Then after take you down to the pitch lake by foot and show you something spectacular.

There are 3 pitch lakes in the world. This is one that you can walk on. The official guide is worth the $US 12 for 2 adults, 2 children (and cheaper than the un-official guides) just to know where you should be going. On a sunny day you can feel yourself sinking very slowly into the pitch. Some people bath/swim in the waters that sit on the top of the pitch. You really need a car to get there and if you're coming from Port of Spain it is a long drive - allow 2 hours each way. If you are looking for something that little bit different, it's worth it.

La Brea pitch Lake is a must see on your trip to Trinidad. It has official guides to inform you of the history and qualities of this worlds largest natural asphalt lake. I was amazed this small country has this unique feature. However, on my ride to Maracas Bay, I was encouraged by the integrity of the roads as the route necessitated negotiating a meandering road on the side of a mountain. I will be back.

Not even the Trinidadians recognise this treasure!!! It is a must see! Also, take the tour, the guides are full of great information. My husband and I took our kids along with us, they could not stop asking questions and were thoroughly engrossed in the experience! Well worth the trip!

Very interesting place to visit. Be aware of the cost of a guide, $30TT, and not the $600, yes, six hundred, my wife and I were charged by a chap called Carl, who told us he was an official guide and that that was the cost. A right rip-off for a 45 minute tour. BEWARE!!

My partner and i visited the pitch lake last year and found it to be an amazing experience. We definitely recommend people to visit the pitch lake and hear all the wonderful stories behind it. However when we arrived at the Pitch lake we were approached by some men who were tour guides and one of them accompanied us, when we were leaving my partner who is a UK resident was paying him for the tour and had to call to me after the man wanted more than $200 which he was given and was hassling him for money for his friend as well, so my advice is to get a quote up front and be careful with the tour guides they have up there.
