Peaceful and uplifting with the only 85 feet Hanoman Murthi in the Caribbean. Make sure to walk around the Murthi or Statue and obtain that special blessing of Lord Hanooman.

I have been here numerous times. However, yesterday I visited to take my engagement photos. Prior to going, we visited their website, facebook page and asked others if permission was required to take photographs. We were informed that permission was only necessary for the interior, and a donation was advisable for photographs of the exterior. There was also a sign at the temple that reiterated the fact that photos were allowed but a donation is recommended. No Problem. We were fully prepared to make a donation. In the middle of a shoot, an irate women ran out a started yelling, "Do you have permission to video here?" In shock at here tone, we hesitated. She then continued yelling "its a simple yes or no question, do you have permission?" We answered no and proceeded to tell here about the website and sign and that we were genuinely unaware that permission was required. She started yelling "You have to stop now or you will be talking to the police." We apologized and proceeding to inquire about the other persons taking photos, she replied "that's fine, no filming here" we told her we were not filming. She said "take it up with management." We ended our shoot prematurely and left.
Now the problem is not that permission was required despite the sign, however, the attitude of that person, in a temple, a house of God is ridiculous. I would urge you to visit as it is an exquisite site to behold. But do not overstay your welcome as you may have to "take it up with management."

This temple was constructed by artisans brought in from India. It is well worth a visit to admire the intricate architectural details of the main temple, learn about Trinidad Hinduism, and see the 85-foot statue of the monkey deity, Hanuman. There are giant elephant statues that guard the temple doors. This is a religious site, so appropriate clothing is required (no shorts), and shoes must be left outside the temple door. It's fine to take pictures of the statue and the temple exterior and grounds, but permission is required to take pictures inside, as it's an active place of worship. The temple is half an hour from Port of Spain; take Churchill Roosevelt Highway east to Uriah Butler south; turn right until the Chase Village flyover (overpass); follow the signs south to Waterloo; then follow signs to the temple.

It's true, there IS a big monkey statue there. That's about it. So, it'll take you like 10 minutes even if you take your time to slowly walk around the grounds. Oh, also, you wont have to worry about crowds... so that's nice ...

About a 20 min ride south of Port of Spain you’ll find The Hanuman Statue and Dattatreya Temple. The statue, temple, and its story are fascinating if your into the history of things, architecture, spirituality, sightseeing, etc. . The temple and its grounds are impeccably clean and quite impressive. This is an active temple, we made sure to be mindful of respecting the traditions and were welcomed with open arms. Photos are not allowed inside anywhere. We we told by the locals photos from the common area walkways were ok. The folks we met and conversed with were fantastic, and those interactions made the stop worth much more. After Hanuman, If you have the time and means to continue driving, less than 5 mins to the West right at the coast is the “Temple in the Sea”. Another temple with an equally interesting story and wonderful folks to interact with.

The temple complex has a majestic 85-foot tall murti (effigy) of the Hindu god, Lord Hanuman, apparently the largest Hanuman murti outside India. A fascinating piece of India in Trinidad. Well worth a short visit.

On October 18th, after receiving some real good news, I wanted to thank Hanuman for his benevolence in making me tide over some real crisis. I was staying at Thanna's BB, Port of Spain and I asked the driver Kern to take me to the Hanuman statue. at Carapichaima. I was awed by the size of the statue and the quiet environment of the temple. I was so lucky to have travelled to the site on that day as the next few days the roads to the temple from Port of Spain were un-motorable due to the incessant rains.

If you are a Hindu or like Hinduism then this is a place to visit. It is so calm and peaceful. It feels like you are in a different world. The Hanuman statute is breathtaking as it is so very tall. Great for peace and quiet and it opens early in the morning. I would definitely recommend this place for a tourist visit or locals as well.

A cultural and architectural experience you would not want to miss. In central Trinidad in a village with an Indigenous name, Carapichaima, lies, hidden in its' bowels, two Temples magnificently built in the same yard. The first, the largest Hanuman Statue outside of India, 85ft. tall, standing atop its' Temple. Sitting quietly and patiently in front of the Temple is his Camel, painted in Gold. At times, if you are lucky, you see worshipers perform their rituals, taking off their shoes, ringing a bell a few times then walking around the Temple saying their prayers preparing themselves to go into the Temple. As you continue your walk through the yard, you come upon a beautifully designed Yoga Temple. You will marvel to know that everything you see, all the carvings of musicians and elephants were done by hand. These carvings covers the roof and part of the ceiling. Again, you just might be lucky not just to see inside but to go in. Getting to go in is almost magical to experience, to see they use the alignment of the Planets etc. . You must go to experience this.
