Rainforest hike with excellent tour guide- Darlington Chance
We had an incredible hiking tour through the Gulpin trail in tobago’s main ridge forest reserve with Darlington Chance. Darlington was incredibly knowledgeable about the plants and animals living in the forest. He had lots of stories about the history of forest and island and we felt so lucky to have ended up with him as our guide. It was clear how passionate about conserving the forest and telling its stories Darlington is and I don’t think he was joking when he said the animals hear his voice and come out (it definitely seemed like they did!). We saw so much and learned so much from our tour which we wouldn’t have otherwise and would throughly recommend this hike and especially Darlington as a guide to anyone!

    Fascinating Hike & Birdwatching
The oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere. Hire a guide for fascinating hikes and birdwatching. The biodiversity is remarkable. It was a rainy day (hurricane Beryl was developing) when we went or it might have got a 5 stars from us, bring mozzie repellent and decent shoes as can be very muddy on the paths when the rain comes.

    A Haven For Biodiversity
The oldest legally protected forest reserve in the Western Hemisphere. It's a haven for biodiversity, home to numerous bird species, including the rare white-tailed sabrewing hummingbird. Hiking trails wind through the lush rainforest, offering opportunities for nature walks, birdwatching, and spotting local wildlife. Either hire a guide or do it alone, we had a guide from the local area who was incredibly knowledgable and added to the experience.

My husband and I are birders and we heard about Newton George from fellow birders. We linked up with him via e-mail and were not at all disappointed. We met him at Roxborough and from there he took over the driving using his spacious and comfortable van.
He is an excellent and experienced spotter and very personable. His wife packed a cooler with a filling breakfast for two so that was quite welcome as we had left our hotel at 6am and had not had time to eat anything that morning.
The trip was very fruitful in terms of species sightings. We saw numerous jacamars, trogons, hummingbirds, golden olive woodpecker, common pootoo, visited the lek of the blue-backed manakin.
We certainly will whenever we can, attempt to make another trip to Tobago using Newton George as our guide. We recommend him wholeheartedly to anyone wishing to use a guide in Tobago for the purposes of birding/bird photography.

This is the oldest forest preserve in the Western Hemisphere, dating back to the mid 1700s. We went on a morning trip with amazing local bird expert Newton George, and we were rewarded by amazing sightings of blue-backed manikins, yellow-headed caracaras, a hummingbird on its nest, and many other lovely birds. In addition you see awe-inspiring views and get to hike on what used to be the major north-south road. I can imagine traveling via horseback on that road! It was truly a wonderful and inspiring adventure. Our only concern was finding a bathroom, but fortunately there are public restrooms in nearby villages that only cost $1 TT to use. :)

First off, you definitely need a vehicle to get up to the Main Ridge. Secondly, you need to get there between 6 - 7 am. Once the above two are set, for any nature and wildlife photographer, it is a dream. Loads of species to photograph. No need to get into any forested trails as a lot of photos can be captured just with a slow drive stopping at various points along the road. If you do wish to get into some trails, I recommend a guide. Also make sure to check out Gilpin Trail. White tailed saberwing hummingbirds to Blue backed manakins.
Ensure to take along your water. No need to take too much as their are a number of natural springs along the way where you can refill your bottles with clean spring water.

A pristine environment, this forest is chock full of bird life. There are the typical Caribbean and Central American birds, but the are a few endemic species. The trails can be a bit muddy and are not roundtrip.

TIP: Hire a good guide before you go (Peter Cox is a great guide). You will see far more birds as the guide points things out and knows where to go.

TIP: Make sure you borrow a pair of Wellingtons as the path can be muddy.

TIP: There are a few different paths you can take. The Gilpin Trail is the most famous but let your guide direct you to the trail with the best current birdwatching.

Not sure why this is on TripAdvisor twice. This is the ares with all the main hiking trails and is the reason many come to Tobago, at least the nature enthusiasts!

Went on the Gilpin Trace with the most wonderful guide, Michael. His knowledge of the nature and its inhabitants were abundant - he was very good in showing us the hidden gems and spotting birds. Do not miss a visit to the rain forest, and be sure to choose a certified guide!

I wasn't overly excited about the rainforest and the Gilpin Trace as I'm more happy when I'm in the water and wanted to get cracking to The Nylon Pool which was next on the list of things to do that day.
Our guide, Harris McDonald, turned up with wellies and a great sense of humour and off we went. I couldn't have been more than 10 paces into the forest when I was just looking round in awe. The noises from the birds, the canopy, and the spring stream was just so beautiful. I'd been in the Rainforest in Guadeloupe and I think thats maybe why i wasn't overly fussed - in comparison, well, there is no comparison. Main Ridge is just amazing.
Harris pointed ut birds, did some calls and got responses, explained plants and we saw some freshwater forest crabs the size of dinner plates. it was teeming with life.
It is one of the best experiences I have ever had and I can't wait to go back.

The Gilpin Trail enters the Forest by a tatty board around a mile on the Roxborough side of the Visitors Centre. A guide will point out a number of things to you but one is not essential. You can't get lost; there is no division in the path, just go to the second windfall by the rickerty bridge and then turn back. It will take you no more than 2 hours.

Went with Alibaba Tours and had Jackson as highly knowledgeable guide, having been paractically been brought up in th forest.A slow, ramble, often stopping to listen to...and hopefully see, the many birds, especially the humming bitds.
Take good shoes and take your time.
