- Matthias KDresden, Germany27 contributionsFantastischer AusflugWe set off from the Blue Water Inn in a glass-bottomed boat past Goat Island towards Little Tobago. Our captain was Troy. Once on the island, we had a short hike to the ridge of the island with a view of the open sea and a colony of frigate birds in the distance. The tour was accompanied by a guide who explained a lot about the fauna and flora of the island. Afterwards, we were able to snorkel in the sea off the island. A fantastic excursion.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 November 2023
- HeatherMegaMauriFan272 contributionsBirds of paradise await youThis little island is north of Tobago and you have to reach it by glass boat. The walk up to the top is with a guide and is quite steep. You will hear many birds and see lots of swirling frigates and seabirds. We saw a nesting tropical seabird. There was someone smoking in our group which was disrespectful and annoying. Spectacular views from the top and then snorkelling off Angel reef.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2024

Loved our ride, seeing the area where the Caribbean and Atlantic meet, Goat Island, and snorkeling! It was really hot, but the walk to the overlook wasn't too bad. We watched fishermen, birds flying, and a couple of insurance lizards (Gecko) . The use of bamboo for bird feeders is smart and eco-friendly. If you are in this area, it's worth a trip. We didn't book ahead, but luckily it was a nice day, and we went with Jackie's Fear Not. (on the beach at Speyside, near the school)

The trip itself was good, there are lots of birds on little Tobago but not much more, and the snorkelling was nice, thou the coral is pretty dead. But whilst we were snorkelling the guide went throu our bags and helped himself to my husband's leatherman pocket knife. If you do this trip don't use the Top Ranking Reef Tour boat use Franks

Hans Philips is a great tour guide! We met him at Store Bay and after a friendly conversation decided to do the Bird of Paradise Island Tour. Ours was a party of six that included 4 young adults ranging in age from 18 to 21. Hans picked us up at 8:30 a.m. from our residence in Lambeau and we drove along the windward side of the island to the village of Speyside where we got onto a glass bottom boat which took us to Little Tobago which is a bird sanctuary. The drive was amazing! Hans was very knowledgeable, with a great sense of humor and he kept our group thoroughly entertained. Little Tobago is a bird lover's paradise, and my husband Leroy was very excited to see the many different species of birds. I would advise you to wear comfortable shoes and insect repellant. After hiking, we snorkeled in the waters of the Atlantic - Angel Reef - beautiful! We saw fish of all sizes and colors and the coral reef, the brain coral, the Japanese gardens - absolutely amazing. The girls also enjoyed jumping off the boat into the water, and Hans provided us with some very memorable photos at no extra charge.
After snorkeling we had lunch at Jemma's Tree House Restaurant where the food is delicious - the breadfruit pie is to die for! At first I thought I was not going to enjoy my meal because I was a little nauseous from the boat ride but Hans came to my rescue and arranged to have angostura bitters mixed with water for me to drink. This immediately settled my stomach and I was able to enjoy the grilled fish, salad, tannia fritters, rice, vegetables, Bar-B-Q chicken, fried plantain and of course, the breadfruit pie! After that was a trip to the Argyle Falls, and I must admit that at that point we all felt like taking a long nap! But the falls were breathtaking and the cool refreshing water certainly woke us up. Once again the girls really enjoyed jumping into the water. After that we made our way back to Scarborough where Hans treated our group to ice cream (my daughter Micaela was celebrating her birthday and Hans included this at no extra charge). We returned home around 5:30 PM after an amazing tour.
Hans truly made this a special trip for us. He made us feel like it was personalized just for us. And all this was at a cost of $85 US per person. A great deal! I think we made a great choice when we selected Hans as our guide and I highly recommend Hans Tours. Below are additional comments from each one in our group:
"Hans Tours gives you a beautiful and relaxing tour of Tobago. It is more personalized; you are not crowded on a boat with other people - just you and your party. I highly recommend this tour for your trip". (Ariana)
"Our group really enjoyed our day with Hans and our tour. We laughed all day and I will never forget our experiences. Hans Tours makes lifelong memories". (Lauren)
"Hans was an amazing tour guide. He made us very excited to see Tobago, as he explained everything we would be doing before we started the trip. He is certainly a fun and adventurous person to be around and I enjoyed the exclusive sites he brought us to". (Jeanine)
"I went on Hans Tours with my family for my birthday; it was great! He is so personable and funny! I got to experience things I never would have imagined. I highly recommend you go on his tour!" (Micaela)
"Hans was very business-like, informative and thorough. One immediately gets the feeling of confidence in the director, and for the 8 hours of the tour, these feelings come to full fruition. With humor and knowledge, Hans makes you love Tobago and makes you want to be a part of its culture, fauna, and physical features." (Leroy)

Went with Frank's tours, and just walked up and were able to get a boat with no reservation. Cost between $180 and $200 TT per person (depending on who you were talking to). Went with a group of mostly birders who wanted to spend more time on the island, which meant that snorkelers had to settle for snorkeling off-shore of Little Tobago instead of at the more beautiful Angel Reef (which the glass bottom boat went over on the way back). Although the coral wasn't that nice where we snorkeled we saw a lot of fish. It was wonderful seeing the Red-billed Tropic birds (including young birds in the nest) and the occasional motmot on the island. That's all we saw on the short bird watching part of the tour. Frank's staff were friendly and very good about making sure everyone got on and off the boat safely and were OK during the walking for bird watching. There were some steep and slippery areas, so as others have mentioned, wear decent walking shoes or sandals. If you want to snorkel on Angel Reef or the Japanese Garden be sure to make that clear when you reserve or pick a boat (there are two companies operating out of the jetty next to the Blue Water Hotel).

The island is just 15 minutes boat ride from Speyside coast. The view of the islands around from the water is magnificent. Little Tobago is a very small island and its just a 15 minute easy hike up to the top. Once you get up there, the view is simply breathtaking. We saw some 200 tropical birds swarming around. Its quite surreal up there. Awesome place for bird watchers! The Speyside reef is also quite nice for snorkelling.

If you're interested in eco tourism then this would be a great stop. The guide points out various birds and plants and spiders, some not seen anywhere else. They also give you the history of the Bird of Paradise which the island got its first name from. Great little hike.

How to get there:
- We did as part of a glass bottom boat tour with Franky's Tours (from Batteaux bay, within Blue Waters Inn Resort), which also included snorkelling in Angel's Reef (cost 150TT)
Little Tobago:
- Small island, quite dense (thus quite humid)
- Paved path/steps to top, with nice views
Our Tour:
- Guide showed us various plants, discussed the history of the island & Tobago, pointed out different species of birds (we saw maybe 3 different species), trap-door spiders etc.
What to bring:
- Sunscreen
- Light clothes - it gets quite humid in the forest
- Repellant
- Water
- Swimming/snorkelling gear - can go swim/snorkel in Angel's Reef
- Camera
- Binoculars if you're keen on birdwatching
Other Tips:
- No bathrooms here or places to buy food

We were guided by Randy on a tour of Little Tobago Island from the Blue Waters Inn in Speyside. We chose the Top Ranking tour as they were able to give us an almost exclusive tour as we were a party of 5. There is also Franks. On the island there is a mass of seabirds; Tropicbirds, Red Footed Boobies, Frigate birds all wheeling in the air when not nesting on the island. Randy was very well informed about the habits of the birds and although it was a bit of a walk up to the top the views from there were well worthwhile. Afterwards we were able to snorkel across the coral reefs surrounding the island and enjoy the variety of fishlife. It was a very enjoyable trip lasting about 3 hours and for $25 each was great value.

Ive marked this as excellent as I like birdwatching but my partner would probably mark as average as it was just an interesting excursion for him.
We went on a rainy/sunny/cloudy/ day 28 degrees from Blue waters inn. We booked via Newton George and Randy took us onto the island with another family (who had a 6 month old baby and a 4 year old). Im not too fit but managed the hill in open trekking sandals. You need footwear that will grip. Randy takes his time to ensure no one is left behind. Excellent explanations of nature and wildlife by Randy. He also brings a spotting scope so birders only need their binoculars. We stopped half way to see the bats in the new (not yet opened) visitor centre. At the top a snake slithered by! wow, apparently first one seen in years - non poisonous, plus a type of large lizard. lots of birds but speciality is the red billed tropic bird and red footed boobys (all seen really well) lots of other good species too. The rain didnt really affect us as we sheltered in the visitor centre and then in the canope.
On the way back to Blue waters inn the boat stopped and we got in to snorkel (the family stayed on board the glass bottom boat), it was a drift snokel and safe. Light was not too good so we didnt see any bright corals but many fish - although not as good as some places we have been. After 20 mins we got out, the boat took us over Angel reef to see the fan corals (much better conditions) and then back to the pier.
Getting on and off the boat at Blue waters and the island would be difficult for anyone with mobility problems. (no gangplank). The ladder for getting in and out for snorkelling was fine (I could manage it with an iffy knee!).
Would recommend and a nice little adventure with good guiding.

Can someone tell me what in Tarnation is number 11 photo? The guy is holding something that looks like a purple octopus? Or a coral? Or a plant? It's killing me not to know what this is!!!!

Could someone please provide a little more detail as to what the day includes? We are going with Peter Cox next week....
Written 16 December 2019
There are options for what you can do on the island, mostly people climb to the top and watch the frigate and tropic birds. Side trails, picnic, snorkel, ....
You should probably check with your guide as to what they’re including in your visit. Enjoy!!

To my knowledge there is no shop on the island

We went with Peter Cox tours and he arranged the boat to Little Tobago. You may also try contacting one of the hotels in Speyside.

Hi how do I get to little Tobago and how much does it cost
Written 18 July 2016
Peter Cox arranged the boat ride over on a glass bottom boat - they would have let us snorkel but the sea was too rough. You may be able to book directly but I never looked into that. Total boat and guided tour was about $50 each but that was a discount because there were 8 of us. Hope this helps.
