- Jenny G1 contributionA terrific private tour of the Castle.I organised a private tour of the Castle at the end of February for my parents and I while holidaying at the Castle. We stayed in my favourite apartment (The Maitland suite). Our tour guide Norman greeted us on the Castle steps and proceeded to take us on a wonderful historical journey of the Castle itself, the Maitland-Carew family, the military connections and pointing out fascinating artefacts. We left with a much deeper appreciation of the contribution of this Castle, the family within and it's relationship with Lauder. Norman was an excellent guide & storyteller and we thank him very much for the experience. I'd recommend a private tour to anyone.Thank you so much for this kind review about our private tour. We are pleased you enjoyed your time with us so much and hope to welcome you back again in the future.Written 10 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 March 2024
- Emma SKilmarnock, United Kingdom8 contributionsA dreamy 2 night stay2 nights staying in The Scullieries. After being stunned by the inpressive eagle gates and sight of the castle, we recieved a warm welcome by Edward on arrival. The apartment is an absolutely gorgeous space for a couple - excellently styled, comfortable and well equipped. Amazing to be dog friendly. The grounds are fantastic for walks, even in the rain and the boot room very handy. The castle itself is utterly fascinating - so much history. Amanda in the office was a brilliant help and was fantastic at communicating throughout our stay. We booked a private tour and Norman was a superb tour guide - warm, welcoming and throughly knowledgeable. I could not recommend a stay and a tour more highly.Thank you so much for leaving this lovely review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay and tour! - Cori DWinnipeg, Canada95 contributionsYou must stop and stay at this castle.Rent a room and stay at the castle. Rooms are huge with kitchen area, living room, bedroom and large bathroom. Best castle we have ever stayed in. ; ) The staff (Amanda, Jenna, Evelyn) were fantastic for us as was Edward, the noble castle owner (who lives there with his family). The tour is a lesson in history and shows very old artefacts, including the bedroom where Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed. Walk into the town of Lauder in less than 10 minutes (but up a steep hill). Loved every minute of our stay.Thank you for such a kind review. - leonard mEdinburgh, United Kingdom438 contributionsA castle with an interesting history and an excellent guideThe central "keep" of the castle - that is the tall bit in the middle when you look at the front door - is from 1590; the rest dates from later periods and in particular from 1840 when there seems to have been a lot of restoration and additions. When you visit, you are taken on a time allocated tour which is restricted to two floors of the keep. You should understand therefore that you will be visiting a relatively modest part of the whole structure. The Maitland family continue to live in one wing of the castle. Other parts are made over to holiday lets. It is a fabulous building, well maintained, and for all its oddities, very attractive. Given the scale of the place there is a surprisingly modest collection of antique furniture on view, but what there is to see is exceptional and the reason for there not being more is explained by the guide. There is a large collection of paintings on view - mostly portraits of family. The quality of the art varies from the sublime to the remarkably poor. The two best are to be found on the second floor in the large events hall. There are some other good paintings of landscapes very much in the manner of the time when they were painted but worth viewing. There are other smallish but interesting displays of porcelain, snuff boxes and so on, but all of this just serves to remind the visitor that the castle was/is a home and not a museum. Like many more modest family homes, it is full of the stuff accumulated over the years (in this case centuries) some of which appears to be quite incongruous but adds to the interest. It seemed to my partner and I that the real show is the building itself and the history behind it. In some of the rooms it is not the contents that hold interest but the proportions and decor of the room including the original wall paper and the ornate and exceptional plaster ceilings. Our tour guide Helen was wonderful - one of the best we have ever encountered. She pitched her narrative very well, answered questions without hesitation, was very well informed, charming and amusing. She managed to convey the convoluted family history in a meaningful and accessible way that held the interest of our group. The entrance fee includes tea and biscuits at the end of the tour in the ground floor tea room. The castle is set in extensive grounds with some small garden areas that encourage leisurely walks. We very much enjoyed our guided tour and full marks to Helen for enhancing the visit. This tour is unsuitable for the disabled. The tour lasts for about one hour twenty minutes.Thank you for leaving such a wonderful review of our guided tour. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed the tour and we will pass on your kind comments to Helen.Written 11 September 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 September 2024

This is an impressive castle. You can only visit it on a booked tour (unless you book one of their suites at the castle when some of the rooms are used by guests or attend a wedding). We had Hazel. It was her first tour and she was excellent. She gave us just the right amount of information without giving too much, but could answer questions if asked.
Parking is a little way from the castle, where you also check in. It's then a short walk uphill. There is disabled parking a little nearer. I have a bad back but could walk up to the castle, but I had asked about chairs to sit on as I can't stand for any length of time. Not only was I given a shooting stick seat to carry round to use as I needed, but also the accompanying guide also pointed out seats I could sit on in each room - very impressive.
At the end we were given a drink and biscuit, which was a total surprise. There's a small shop, and toilets are outside. There aren't really any grounds or gardens.

Great tour by a very knowledgeable and friendly guide; his name was Norman. This magnificent historical house and gardens, is filled with one of a kind furnishings, photos, artifacts, and beautiful old paintings; all with a unique story behind them. The tour was well organized, with a reasonable number of visitors, and we were given enough time to admire each room for a few minutes, after listening to some historical details first, for context. There are some stairs to climb and uneven floors, but not particularly tasking, except for those with assistive walking devices. We were treated to some tea, at the end of the tour, which was surprising and lovely. The entrance fee is comparable to other historical venues, so no surprise there. Public toilets are available, which is always a welcomed incentive, when visiting places like this. I really enjoyed my visit, though I didn’t get a chance to enjoy a walk around the beautiful garden. Definitely recommend this lovely area attraction to others as well.

We enjoyed an excellent guided tour of this splendid castle today. I thought it was excellent value, lasting an hour and a half and concluding with tea/coffee and a biscuit. Our guide was knowledgeable and we learned a lot about the family and the house itself. He also had an streak of humour which was much appreciated. The interiors are quite mixed from the darkness of the Victorian lower rooms to the brightness of the upper floor which includes fantastic plaster ceilings and some really beautiful furniture and paintings. You can tell its a lived in house and that adds to its charm. I had a great time and would highly recommend visiting.

Thirlstanes management have no understanding of contractual obligations. They accepted our booking on 3 May 23 for the Earl and Countess apartment - to stay for 3 nights in October for an important family celebration - and took payment of our almost £200 deposit immediately. Over a month later they rang to summarily cancel the booking with the very weak excuse about failure of their booking system They offered alternative dates that were completely unacceptable even with a discount. Did they get a subsequent booking for a more profitable package I wonder. Poor business practice and total disrespect for their customers. Would never book with them again and advise others to beware.

Stopped in on the way to Edinburgh and unfortunately arrived too late for a house tour. Opted instead to pay for a walk around the grounds (with my wife and daughter) and found...
Piles of dog mess everywhere, including in the children's play / picnic area. Not fresh poop - it clearly hadn't been cleared for several days (and it must have been a big dog...).
Very loose and poorly maintained geotextile grids on the signed paths forming a very real trip hazard - not just sticking up a bit, they were a mess.
Rubbish, including a used condom wrapper!, on the rear stone steps of the lawns.
Nails protruding from wood on the ground on the path, exposed cables on the ground and a smashed gate (these are quite close to the house, but its not fully clear if they were part of the estate. They were certainly on the woodland walk).
No formal gardens to see - just lawns.
This was all on a day when they had dozens of children attending a PE event. It was blatantly obvious that no care had been taken to inspect or properly maintain areas that they are charging for access to.
It was so bad that this was the first time I have ever asked for a refund, which was extremely awkward.

Visited here mid week so it was nice and quiet, we booked the tour and so glad that we did as it was very insightful. Our guide Carol was very knowledgeable without being robotic as is often the case. The Castle is steeped in history and makes a very pleasant 2 hour visit and the free cup of tea and cake at the end of the visit is a lovely bonus. Bargain !!

Thirlstane Castle is a 16th century fairytale castle a short distance from Lauder and the A68 making travel throughout the borders or up to Edinburgh very easy. The castle runs as a charity and has a number of luxurious self catering apartments for rent. All profits from the castle and the rooms is used for the upkeep of this beautiful gem and its grounds. The Maitland family still live in the north wing of the castle. We stayed in the Glenburnie, a one bedroomed apartment, which was spacious, spotless and filled with beautiful furniture and paintings. The kitchen has all mod cons and top of the range appliances and crockery etc. High quality bed linen and towels. It is dog friendly and there is a lovely walk through the woods and along the river bank. The view from the windows was spectacular - a gravelled drive leading to a grassed ha ha overlooking alarge field of sheep containing some spectacular trees. Waking up in the morning to the gentle baaing of sheep and tweeting of birds was so relaxing. We also took a tour of the castle which was fascinating. The guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. I particularly loved the 17th century sedan chair and the chest rescued from the Armada. Also the sword which was found in the grounds and is hundreds of years old. All finished off with a cup of coffee and a tea cake. Please come and stay here and contribute to the upkeep of this wonderful treasure.

The best guided tour I have ever been on. The guide knew everything. She was friendly and welcoming and interested in the job and the surroundings. The castle was amazing. I have passed this castle for over 50 years and this was the first time I have gone in. The cost was well worth the money and you even got a cup of tea and a cake after the trip round.

We spent 9 nights over the new year, in the Lauderdale apartment, it was as always fantastic, never disappoints. The one bedroom apartments is spacious and well equipped. An ideal place to stay and recharge one’s batteries or if you are seeking a quiet retreat. The castle is surrounded with woods and there are numerous river walks close by.

The whole experience was outstanding, from the welcome from Martin the “Caretaker” to the departure. The Lauderdale Apartment was of a very high spec, it was beautifully furnished, very welcoming and importantly, for a few very cold November days, warm. We booked a personal tour of the castle and this was extremely well put together and very interesting and enjoyable. We would most certainly recommend it. Thank you!

There is no restaurant at the castle but there are a couple of very good places to eat in the town of Lauder which is a ten-minute walk from the castle. During our visitor season in the summer months there is a tea room at the castle serving light lunches, cakes and refreshments.
