    Christmas eve treat
We came here on Christmas eve for the Santa train ride and were looking forward to it but we were disappointed. The train was over 20 minutes late we were the last train of the day, and we were in a first-class compartment that hadn't been decorated as advertised, when we got on board members of staff then came to bring us crackers and gifts, etc that should have already been in there. One member of staff said 'Oh your already in! ' when he came to bring crackers in. Santa was terrible took him ages to come and see the children at the end of the train ride could have been organised better, when he finally came to see us his Santa's beard was hanging down below his beard so my Daughter said that isn't the real Santa! She asked him about the names of his Reindeers and he couldn't tell her any and didn't engage with her, he stared at her and smiled. After spending a lot of money on this experience was very disappointed and felt like it was rushed because it was the last one of the day.

    Bit Boring
Unless you're a train enthusiast then it's rather boring in my opinion. Went for the Easter weekend. It wasn't that well organised and very underwhelming. The short train ride to the destination is quite nice but once you get there there's really not much to see of interested at all.

    A heritage railway in decline?
Sadly the railway seems to be in decline, the staff and volunteers are fantastic, unfortunately the appearance of the stations leaves a lot to be desired, weeds growing up over the platforms, old rotting wooden and rusty rolling stock just seems to be dumped at Swanick. All the trains seem to be diesel now, we visit quite regularly and I can’t remember the last time we visited and rode on a steam train. It’s sad because in the past we have had some brilliant days out here. Disappointingly we are visiting this weekend for the Dinosaur experience and it’s a diesel engine again..

Visit the West shed and donate
We were really disappointed visiting here. Arrived and no one spoke to us said morning twice and got ignored. Credit due to the individual in the model railway building he advised us where to go what to see otherwise we wouldn't have known A weekend visit must be different to midweek because the reviews didnt match our experience most of the main exhibitions were locked up warehouses, no miniature railway running, no garden railway. Not anything like advertisements and talk about grumpy drivers - I don't think he uttered a word, we may aswell been on the national express to London. The best part of this visit was the separate independently run Princess Royal West shed so glad that was there the members in their were so interested; accommodating just wonderful they made our sons birthday special, so much so we donated to them specifically - they don't get anything from the midland site in terms of financial support. The staff in the main "attraction" on a weekday certainly need to take a tip from them in how to treat people - even if they are volunteers if you don't enjoy it or care about someone's experience don't bother.

We attended the santa trains on the 2/12/23 the weather was very cold and icy there was a few issues with the train getting to run and was running late. Despite this we had an excellent day our kids loved the puppet show and all the volunteers and elves could not do more to make sure we were entertained. WELL DONE ALL 5* FROM US. We will be back.

Very disappointed with my trip today on the Santa Special. A pre-Christmas treat for my granddaughter was neither comfortable nor enjoyable.
We arrived at the time requested and were informed there would be a short delay in the train arriving. We had dressed appropriately for the cold weather but after almost two hours, the lack of seating and warm places to wait, the novelty of the event was waning.
We were all grateful when the train eventually arrived at the platform but how could it have been so cold in the carriage? We saw absolutely nothing of the journey as the windows were iced up on the outside. I have no idea where we travelled to and the volunteers did their best but seemed stressed and disinterested. Most of the young children in the carriage were distressed and it was a relief when we finally disembarked.
Such a shame. Not the festive experience I had anticipated.

Went on the Santa Train, very disappointing, the train was an hour late, so we had to sit in a freezing cold marquee for an hour and had a ten minute absolutely pathetic puppet show. Finally got on the train to an even colder place, no heating, windows steamed up so couldnt see a thing, all toilets were out of order on every carriage, 20 minute ride to somewhere unknown, then a twenty minute stop..doing absolutely nothing, no idea why, two children under 5 years old with us were in tears with the coldness, not even a Santa chat could cheer them up, it was so cold it was painful, another 20 minute stop for ??? god knows, we all wanted the toilet but they wouldn't let us off to use the ones at the random station we were sat in. All in all as a 63 year old I would say it was up in the top ten things of worst experiences I have ever had to endure..child birth being number one.. Cost us as a family with 2 grandkids and a friend with us £90.00..absolute rip off, even on a warmer day

I have been visiting Midland Rail for over 20 years and have attended the fireworks evening on numerous occasions. I have so many happy memories of taking my children when they were young. However this years display was so disappointing and things seems to have changed for the worse. The actual display was poor and was on for half the amount of time it used to be. One of the most disappointing things was there was nothing to look at, we used to really enjoy looking around the trains but there was nothing this year. Everything seemed to be roped off. The carriages we went on were filthy and looked really grubby. Staff/volunteers were not friendly at all and we noticed on two separate occasions some of the volunteers arguing quite vocally between themselves. We will be looking to go somewhere different next year, don’t feel it was value for money at all.

Firstly let me say that I fully understand the difficulties of running any voluntary organisation with limited funds, having been involved with other groups over the years.
I last visited the MRC in 2010, and was disappointed then, but I assumed that would have shown some improvement by now. So, rather misguidedly, I took my wife and family (on holiday from the south coast) and the whole place was so depressing that I felt embarrassed to have suggested this visit as part of their week, The locomotive was a scruffy and dirty diesel (my son and grandson had hoped for a steam locomotive, as the timetable indicated steam or diesel, but we accepted that this might not be possible).
The first criticism was the disgusting state of the carriages, the seats were worn and filthy and the floor covered with dog hairs (how long does it take to run a vacuum clearer round?). The windows looked as though they hadn't been cleaned since Dr. Beeching's time. I honestly felt that I needed to have a hot shower as soon as I got home !
The (dirty) toilets at Butterley involve a long walk over rough ground, past old rolling stock.....quite intimidating as no one was about and very difficult for anyone disabled, or with a young boy urgently needing a wee ! There was (fortunately!) just one working toilet on the train, as once you're on, you ca't get off for quite some time (even though the actual journey time is only a few minutes).
The only refreshment available at Butterley, while you were waiting for the train, was crisps, cold drinks and sweets. Even the entrance was unwelcoming with piles of dusty and collapsing suitcases, the only nice period item being an open fireplace. This was, however, covered in dust and with uncleared ash in the grate, probably dating back to last winter. My wife said it would have looked really nice with a dust round, “a bit of black lead”, and laid with a few logs, maybe an hour's job ?
The whole point is that leisure attractions, such as the Midland Railway Centre purports to be, now need to appeal to a younger generation who don't necessarily remember the “good old days”, and need to offer value for money and an enjoyable experience, particularly now that funds are not unlimited for many people, especially when bringing a young family. There are plenty of other competing attractions in the area, including at least two other preserved railways (try Peak Rail or Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, or Crich Tramway Museum, to see how it should be done ?) within a short car journey, so please don't waste your time and money here.
I see that there are similar criticisms of dirty trains, rotting rolling stock, tumbledown buildings and parts of the site being closed without warning even though full entry fees were still charged, these comments dating back to pre-Covid, so, sadly, it seems that nothing is improving, or likely to improve. Maybe it's time to cut losses, scrap all the junk, and offer anything worthwhile to another railway who will be able to preserve it properly

We had a terrific day here (2 adults and a 3 year old - under 5s are free which is a bonus). From Butterley, Swanwick Junction is quite a short trip but the line extends past the two stations in either direction and the views over the water en route are lovely so we stayed on the loop on our first trip (your ticket lasts all day).

At Swanwick there is plenty to see. The miniature railway staffed by friendly and knowledgeable enthusiasts was open. The Golden Valley Light Railway (£3 adults, £1.50 children) was also open and takes you for a good little ride and there are some treasures over in the Sheds with a restored Triumph motorcycle that had been round the world twice a particular highlight. Again, the enthusiastic, knowledgeable volunteers add to this.

At Swanwick there is a reasonably priced tea room where you can buy hot drinks, sandwiches, ice creams on a hot day etc but you can bring a picnic in and there is a little play area where little ones can play as well. The Railwaymens' Chapel which was rebuilt on site is also terrific.

There are longer heritage railways you can go on but for a varied and interesting day out, I can thoroughly recommend this.
