We hired a local boat for 5 hours to take us out to the island. It was $100 and the boat was clean with a cooler for snacks/drinks. He first took us around the island to see pelicans, herons, seals, and other marine life. Then stopped at an amazing beach with fine white sand and crystal clear agua green water. There were changing rooms and outdoor toilets (stinky) to use. The beach was gorgeous with the mountain backdrop and only about 50 visitors. A must for any visitor to the area.

We came to Loreto looking to visit Danzante Island, which was highly recommended by our Whale Watching guide in Laguna San Ignacio, Sofia Merino. Being the start of the season, there were few people and most of them wanted to take a boat to other islands or for fishing. Since we were in Loreto just for a couple of days, we asked our hotel manager if she knew who could take us. Fortunately her cousin Peter had a boat, but he suggested he should go to Coronado island instead, as it was "much better".

Cousin Peter told us to meet him at the dock at 7am or earlier if possible as there was going to be bad weather later in the day. We were the only boat that left that morning with the two of us and thanks to Peter we were able to reach Coronado Island and had the island with its beautiful beach and sea lions, all to ourselves. He even took us to chase some whales on our way back and gave us a fishing lesson. Peter comes from a family of fisherman and had been fishing for 40 years, so this was a real treat.

My advice is, if you are not traveling with 8 or 10 other people during low season, then hire a Panguero directly in the dock, or better yet look for Peter, which will definitely be cheaper than chartering a tour for few people with any of the more established business.
We didn't have a fancy lunch in the beach, neither a fancy boat with glass bottom like the established tour shops, but we had so much fun with Peter. Peter said that if we would have told him in advance, he would have prepared his famous guacamole and he would have fish something to make a ceviche, so we are looking forward to a next time with him.
Ask for cousin Peter at the Posada San Martin, which is near the dock, and plan for an early outing, so that you can have all the daylight to enjoy Coronado. Bring a hat, swimming suits, snorkels or swimming glasses, a windbreaker and good walking shoes, as you will have the opportunity to hike the Island.

Beautiful island and beautiful beaches, loved it. We hired a local fisherman from the co op by the harbor in Loreto and paid 1,500.00 pesos plus gave him 500 pesos in tip. It was just me and my son in the boat and we spend about 4 hrs on the island. Bring food, water, etc as there is no services on the island at all.

We took a half day trip from our cruise ship. The speed boats took us around the windward side of the island before dropping us off on a quiet bay. There is a little nature trail on the island and a great quiet beach, but not a lot of shade. Water is cool but I didn't need a wetsuit for snorkeling. I am a stronger swimmer so I appreciated that my husband had a beach to relax on. But you can see a lot of fish in shallow water, too. The outboard boat we went on was the most strenuous part of the trip. Saw sea lions, starfish, and lots of fish.

We stayed at Villa del Palmar Loreto and booked a tour of Coronado Island with Wild Loreto. This is a highly recommended tour to take. Very fun and very memorable.

The only drawback is that the tour begins out of the harbor in the town of Loreto, which took a long time to get to due to the road construction on the highway from Villa del Palmar. We were advised to make a day of it and visit Downtown Loreto after taking this tour, which worked out very well. I would recommend combining a visit to Downtown with one of these activities out of the harbor in Loreto.

Juan and Daniel were our guides on this trip and they were very knowledgeable about the area. One of my favorite parts of this tour was playing with a pod of bottlenose dolphins. They came right up to our boat (about 8-10 of them) and loved to surf the boat wake and race the boat, right under the bow of the boat. I was about an arm's distance away from the dolphins. Amazing!

They then brought us to a great snorkeling spot with a wide variety of beautiful fish and very clear water. Daniel brought us sea creatures to check out, like sea stars, urchins, and puffer fish. He guided us to some very beautiful fish, and even some eels. He really knows what to look for. I have a lot of snorkeling experience, and this was right up there with the Caribbean. Very fun. We also took a tour of the beautiful coastline, and where the sea lions gather. However, when we went, the sea lions were not around.

We then beached the boat on a gorgeous white sand beach and had lunch (provided) in the shade under a little hut. Just a heads up--there were quite a few honeybees. They were totally fine with being swatted away and nobody got stung. We swam for a while in the beautiful warm, clear water, with pelicans hanging out all around us.

This was a very fun tour and I would highly recommend it for anyone, including families with children. Daniel and Juan were so great to hang out with. This was a very memorable experience and we will definitely do it again. Check out the photos taken with my underwater camera. Thanks Daniel and Juan!

Everything about this area is totally worth it
From side to side anywhere you look around is pure beauty. My only recommendation is to arrange the trip with a local activities shop, otherwise if you go straight to the marina and hire your own water taxi, they won’t really make a lot of effort to show you slowly and explain around the island and will charge you as if they were professional tourist guides.
The beach at the end of the tour is breathless and you can do some hiking on that side as well.

Mexico has improved the Baja Sur Experience with their National Park System in the Sea of Cortez. This pretty local has clean clear blue water with coral, marine life and walking trails. This is a rustic site but provides an excellent sampling of nature in Baja all within relatively close distance from Centro Loreto. Highly recommended...

Isla Coronado was a worthwhile trip - made particularly interesting by the captain of the fishing boat who took us there. Excellent white sandy beach. We saw whale spouts in the distance, and a seal colony on the far side of the island. The wind picked up and made it a bit choppy, but the captain was skilled at minimising the impact.

The best birthday spot! Take a panga around the island, see the sea lions serenading your trip. Pull up to the wonderful bay with turquoise waters on a sandy beach. Relax on the beach, snorkel or take in the view a real gem, not to be missed!

Liked the sight of seals and birds.
Didn't like that the boat operator did not have snorkels as originally offered as part of the tour.
