I visited Punta Lobos beach and watched the ingenious method the fisherman use for launching the pangas I was amazed but later all was soured when the fisherman returned with their bounty of dead sharks. I watched about 10 pangas remove over 50 sharks, 2-7 feet, and then fin, and sloppy try to conceal to the far side of the bay in the back of a pick up truck. Both shark fishing and finning are illegal.

I've been coming to Punta Lobos for 9 years to watch the fishermen bring in their pangas with their catch, to enjoy the small lagoon with the quaint chapel and abundant bird life and marvel at and walk the unspoiled expanse of pure sand beach heading north from the massive outcrop of rock that protects the fishing beach. Unspoiled. That was the key word and in years past I would have given Punta Lobos 5 stars for those reasons. It's true there was sometimes trash and there are no facilities, but it was perfect none the less. It was a place where Mexican families came to camp during Semana Santa and there were always a few families there enjoying the beach no matter what time of year. It historically has been an important recreation and fishing beach for the people of Todos Santos and beyond for as long as anyone can remember.
Now I considered giving it 1 star. The new development, Tres Santos, that uses the words "sustainable" and "mindful" to promote its giant development that will effectively swallow Todos Santos has ruined the beach for the fishermen by building a giant seawall that is deteriorating even before it is finished and has a huge pile of rocks in front of it that have damaged pangas, their motors and transmissions. In frustration and anger the fishermen closed access to the building site in late October demanding answers to irregularities. So if you did not come before now, you missed it.
I still recommend seeing for yourself what greed and arrogance can do to a pristine place.

Very quiet and relaxing beach. I do not recommend swimming in there, very brave waves.
How to get there? From Highway 19, you turn in the gravel/sand road to Hotel San Cristobal. Drive 2.5 km (5 minutes) and you will be arrived.
Experience: it is a very good place to relax, watching the fishermen doing their job, using the waves to reach the shore. There is also the San Cristobal hotel, it really looked very interesting and nice. Maybe in other time we will book in there.
The beach is full of pelicans and gulls, mostly because they want the fish on the boats. Someone told us that there is a spot where you can watch sealions, but we could not find it.
Opening Hours: all day, every day.
Cost: parking and admission are free.
Duration: 1 hour if you are just stopping by, or all day enjoying the sun.

So sad what is happening to this once-treasured beach. The fishermen have been pushed to a dangerous, rocky corner and an ill-advised development has claimed this beach. Shame on the developers for destroying this environmentally sensitive beach along the way.

Fresh like they are just out of the water fresh. Pick what kind you want. Do you want a series of filets? Do you want a big piece of Dorado? How about a chunk of Tuna?
The local Pangas (small boats) pull up to this little cove with their fresh catch of the day. You pick what you want and a 5 gallon bucket of fish cost you between 50 and 100 pesos. Take your haul to the restaurant just down the beach and they will cook it up for you.
Getting there is half the fun. Just outside of Todos Santos on highway 19 you will see a tiny little dirt road at KM marker 54. Take the dirt road but be very careful. It has deep sand along the way, but mostly just as you get to the beach.
There is a Y in the road, stay to the left. Sometimes there are guards there. If you are confused ask for directions. Good Spanish is not required.
When you get to the beach take your cooler, bucket or zip locks down and select your fresh catch. Have what you want cooked and take the rest back with you for later.
I recommend taking a cooler of ice with you to keep your fish cold. It's an hour back to Cabo San Lucas or La Paz.
Just remember to keep your rental car far from the sandy areas. There isn't any cell service to call for a tow truck and taking it there likely violates your rental agreement. It does for National.

if you are lucky enough to have some serious time while visiting Todos Santos, you MUST experience watching the local panga fishermen return to shore with their catch of the day. It is one of those memorable travel stories to tell back home, and for those of us who live here, the best way to buy the fish you'll be cooking that night. Many of the beaches around Todos Santos are accessed off the main highway on rough, dirt roads. Punto Lobos is an interesting ride...past the ruins of the old canning facilities (which you can pull over and explore, or hike up the trail to the top of the hill and view the old harbor and sea lion rookery), and the charming little church where the fishermen have prayed for their safety for many years. if you go around 2pm....you will start to see the pangas arrive...and the whole beach eventually turns into a marketplace, much like I have seen in other parts of the world like India, Thailand, and in Caribbean countries. They wait for just the right wave to ride into shore as they rev their motors to propel them onto the sand. it is quite a sight and also quite a thrill ride if you happen to be in the boat....you can choose to go out early in the day to fish with them!
Each boat seems to have a full load of whatever is running that day...Sierra, Pierna, Red Snapper, etc...all delicious. They can clean the fish for you, too. If you come a bit later and miss the fun of the boats surfing to shore, you can still catch your catch under the structure built for cleaning the fish and for selling to the local chefs.
I highly recommend this little side trip..and kids love it, too.

Last year I brought two friends to this beach to hop on a boat to try a little whale watching. It was such a memorable experience, only saw a couple of whales, two adults and a baby...but the owner of the boat caught a dorado and a yellowtail without even trying. Now, the beach has been ruined by a development called Tres Santos. They took out the mangroves and destroyed the ecosystem that flourished there. It's sad to see what greed can do as they ride the catch phase "mindful, sustainable living" for their development.

I arrived around sunrise to meet my fisherman/whale watching boat. As a I made my way from Todos Santos along the dirt road, I anticipated a sleepy departure on a peaceful morning something like the 3-hour tour from Gilligan's Island. Boy did I get something different!
Yes the beach is beautiful. But I didn't have the pedestrian experience.
I was treated to an amazing display of organized chaos. Punta Lobos is the departure point for the local fishing co-op. It took me a few minutes to appreciate the event unfolding in front of me. At first I felt a little startled. 20 or more pangas (boats) lined the beach. Men frenetically maneuvered around and between the row of boats. Amidst all the trash talking, shouting, motors revving, the men involved communicated vital information to one another in order to make this launch work.
In short, once the first boat is launched, it tows the next boat off the beach with rope efficiently contained in a milk crate, then that boat pulls the next one and so on. The fisherman unhook their pull ropes and head out into the ocean, disappearing on the shimmering horizon.
Our boat launched at the end because it had a "guest" on board, so I got to watch each vessel depart. Wow.
After that, I enjoyed several humpback sitings, and I reeled in 3 yellow fin tuna! An unexpected treat on my "3 Hour Tour".
Take some coffee and park your car and watch this if you can. Then you have the solitude of a beautiful beach to enjoy.

Come see these longtime local fishermen and check out their altar on the rocks overlooking this pretty beach. You can also see the Tres Santos beach development in progress. At this time there are no real services except guys pushing a cart or two of drinks and popsicles, but, by fall or early 2017 there should be a boutique hotel, restaurant and a beach club all on a fairly small footprint along this long stretch of beach- not your blow out Cabo resort style madness, but well thought out and mindful. You may notice some signs of opposition. The fishermen and the developers are figuring out how to accommodate each other. Tres Santos plans to construct some infrastructure for the fishermen so they will have fish cleaning and disposal facilities. Right now their operations get a little smelly.

I talked to the owner of the fishing Resort at Point Lobos back before the Covid situation made everything difficult. I would like to come down there and fish for a week but Tom and Jim's phone number seems to be out of order. Could you please call me at 916-862-7752 and see if they are still taking people out in their pangas? Do they still drive from Arizona to Point Lobos. Look forwaed to your call
