The old town Mazatlan is particularly beautiful at night. Although it is pretty anytime of the day, but the lighting at night makes it truly magical and worth wandering the streets looking for a small restaurant to have dinner or a coffee house to have a pastry and a cup of coffee. All the restaurants in the area are quite good and none will truly disappoint. So lose yourself walking around the old town and imagine what it was like 100 years ago when Mazatlan was just a small Fishermans town.

We visited here on a cruise, and had looked into doing an organised excursion but chose to walk into the centre, directed by the local guides in blue. These people are absolutely amazing and you get a real feel for the place, nothing is too much trouble and their tips for food and drinks is spot on. We would absolutely revisit and we’re gutted we did not have longer.

This is an amazing place to visit, real Spanish ambiance, cafe, old buildings, nice public realm. My husband and I loved it being architects and Urban Planner and Designers. We took a lot of photos, colourful simple buildings, cafes, art places, outdoor benches, shopping boutique stores, etc.
I would surely go to this are again and spend more time here exploring, it is super cute and ethnic.

Fantastic area of Mazatlán! I enjoyed the historical buildings and the cobblestone streets. There are a lot of gems in Old Town, you just have to wonder around and find them. Wondering around in the evening is special as well, especially with the lighting, and rarely anyone on the streets.

Enjoyed a rainy afternoon tour Old Matzalan... our Pulmonia driver (Sergio) took us around ever where showing us the sites for hours. Whay started off as' just drop us in town's turned into him waiting for us at each stop which was great because it was raining and he knew what tourists what it see from bottom to top. Definitely would not have seen or enjoyed mazatlan with out his knowledge and fun spirit. Loved the old and new in Mazatlan.

Our small cruise ship arrived here early in the day. We were greeted by the wonderful and helpful blue shirt volunteers. We talked to several. All were pleasant and so eager to offer assistance.They offered a brochure for a walking tour around the old city. My husband and I climbed to the lighthouse with sweeping views of the city, visited the Cathedral Basicilia of the Immaculate Conception, the market and had an excellent late lunch on the plaza before returning to the ship. Never fear getting into town or returning to the port. Just follow the Blue Line.

This is a great place to visit. This market is big, with a lot of areas for different types of merchandise. Due to time limit, we only visited the souvenir area and the snack area. Both provide a lot of deals but I like the snack area better, because the souvenir shops are mainly for tourists and the snack shops are mostly for locals. We bought several items. Later we regretted: why didn't we buy more? This is the cheapest market in our whole Mexico tour.

Unless you’re “trapped” in an all-inclusive hotel or some other gringo gulch, Centro Historico is probably the main draw for tourists in this city. It’s Mazatlán’s version of Old Town in Puerto Vallarta, and I probably like it more because of the range of things to see and do nearby (e.g. Lighthouse Hill). With a fresh cuppa joe and “Search&Rescue” energy bar from Loony Beans in hand, a leisurely stroll up Constitución from Olas Altas will lead you past plazuelas and colourful colonial homes. Tributaries feeding off this main corridor quickly become an enchanting labyrinth with many places to eat and drink. If you’re a power walker, you’ll quickly emerge from the tranquil reverie of this intimate back eddy of Old Mazatlán to converge with an entirely different current: The maelstrom of Mexican life on the go!

Went to old Mazatlan to buy seafood and went to a stand at the far back corner of the marcado. The mahi mahi and prawns were ok but the “scallops” were absolutely atrocious! When we got back to our room and opened them to prepare them they were hard and not opaque, almost like they’d been overcooked but they were supposed to be raw scallops. Not satisfied at all. Be very careful when buying seafood and make sure to watch the whole time it is bagged/packaged.

The pulse of old Mazatlan is great. Friendly people, great restaurants, and the plazas are a great place to hang out. We tried to eat at El Presidio, but they didn't have any tables left, so we wandered into a plaza, met friendly people, and ended up eating at Gaia, outside where we could enjoy the Christmas festivities around us. I absolutely felt safe during our various trips down there, from shopping in the market during the day, to eating out one evening.

We would like to do a walking tour of Mazatlan. Do you have a suggestion of where to go?

Start at the Centro Mercado, "Mercado Pino Suarez" at Calle Aquiles Serdan and Melcor Ocampo. To get there either take a taxi or the "Sabalo-Centro" bus from the Golden Zone and watch for the Centro Mercado, it's in the shopping district, or ask the driver to let you off at "Centro Mercado por favor" I'd suggest that you do this in the mid morning hours while everything is open, great color and activity inside. After that walk about five short blocks further in the same direction you were headed on the bus to Ave. Constitucion, turn right and go about two blocks to Plaza Machado. Walk that area by rounding the adjoining blocks to find great hidden restaurants and shops, don't be afraid to explore. People also have their homes there but the businesses will be clearly marked. Work your way further out several blocks on Constitucion to Calle Olas Altas,the road along the beach. One block to your left you'll see the Freemont Hotel, go up to the top floor restaurant and have a beverage, enjoy the sights and get your bearings. From there I'd walk back along Paseo Olas Altas to where it turns into the Malecon walking a few blocks back towards the Golden Zone, especially in the evenings when everyone is out and all the vendors and entertainers are active. The same is true about all the restaurants and activities, they all come to life later in the evening than we are accustomed to in the US. There are a number of places to see and visit in the Centro area. Pick up a tourist map or download one off the Internet and pick your spots.
