Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I love any city that has pedestrian friendly walks like this - started at the Plaza Guadalajara and the Cathedral, on thru Plaza de la Liberacion and then all along Tapatia Square to the Cabanas Museum. There are cafes, street vendors, fountains, sculptures. I found it all very relaxing and interesting and paused for beers to just people watch.

The Plaza Tapatia is a plaza that is located in near downtown Guadalajara, (GDL). It is a popular plaza that has many shops and restaurants. Plaza Tapatia leads to Instituto Cultural Cabanas, which has many of the famous Mexican Tapatio painter Jose Clemente Orozco. For the most part is a place to visit, walk and have some ice cream. I grew up in GDL and visit once a year. I still go to the Plaza Tapatia to watch the free outdoors shows and to have some Tejuino (tipical GDL drink). Plaza Tapatia is right behind the GDL cathedral. Plaza Tapatia has many fountains and monuments along the plaza and lots of benches with shaded areas. Whatever you do, you'll find it a confortable plaza to hang out.

There are some incredible site and markets around here, but the plaza itself is nothing special. Make sure you visit Mercado San Juan Dios or the large jewel market.

Really fun evening walk along the avenue and plaza, easily walk there from Plaza Armas. Lots of people, vendors selling toys (that remind adults of their childhood!), food and icecream. Continue to be careful as you would in any crowded place anywhere, especially in the evenings, but Guadalajara and especially Tapatia/the avenue are very nice for a long walk and mingling with the locals before heading somewhere for dinner. Get an icecream and check out the majestic serpent sculpture.

This extends from behind the Degollado Theater to the Cabanas Cultural Center. It gets quite hot late spring and summer. A number of pantomimes and artisans are present. There are some cheap eateries on the plaza, needed are better restaurants. Some areas of the plaza has homeless people sleeping out. Towards the end of the plaza is an exit (right) to the large Mercado Libertad where practically anything can be bought on multiple floors.

The promenade from the Cathedral to the Plaza is a perfect example of a great idea for a city's renewal/upgrade but a horrible failure. It is rundown, dirty and an eyesore. Someone with some vision/money of increasing tourism and business should step in an do a makeover to this district. It should be the focal point of tourism and should be avoided until they clean it up and revitalize the area. So sad!

The plaza is filled with work by a Mexican Sculptor. Mostly fanciful a wizard transforming into a sofa with his feet as the legs. But the best part of the sculpture i that people sit on it climb on it and take pictures of themselves and their friends. The plaza has stores and at times vendors an musicians and painters but come for the sculpture The only sad thing is one piece has been broken for years but maybe it is left there as a reminder that these pieces of public art are meant to be used and change with the landscape.

Plenty of parking beneath the plaza. Many stores line the plaza along with local vendors. Unfortunately, there was plenty of trash on the ground. Many historic buildings along the plaza. Our hosts who live in the Guadalajara area told us to watch our wallets. At no point did we feel threatened. Many visitors were in the Plaza. A must visit is the La Tipica Michoacana - a great place for icy edible treats.

See where the city was founded by the Spanish, the Instituto Cabañas (at the far end, visible in this picture), the Ricoñada restaurant (elsewhere in this review of Guad.). worth the hike.
