What a lovely surprise to come over the mountains and find Lake Chapala and Ajijic!!! A charming community with a fabulous malecon along the lake. Rides and tiendas, a beautiful walkway and many local restaurants with a local flavour. We will definitely return when we can stay longer. AND OH!!! The town was all dressed up for Christmas!!! Gorgeous!!!

Being the biggest lake in Mexico you must see? Weather the expat tourist area of ajijic or the old Spanish island prison of the coast of mezacal this lakes highly recommended. The tourism areas aren't the best with higher price stays. Chapala, jotepic, mezcal, octlan are the true gems of the lake.only because of culture and no over growth of houses... More

This used to be chapala's lake, but now is just an empty space, filled with rotten fish and stinky water...

I went early, small town, with walkway with a lake. At the end of the tour they take you down, I guess is the restaurant area with the foreign presence? A getaway for the locals.

We booked a day tour with GDL Adventure. GDLadventure.mx through our Hotel Morales. Ask for the guide Paco; his english is excellent and he took good care of us. Clean, new mini van w/ac. Lots of stops along the way, including a tequila tasting stop. Plan on an 8 hour day. Dinner overlooking the water, then a sunset cruise on... More

Went with friends to visit other friends. Small quaint area. Went to farmers market very nice. Walked out he malecon very interesting. Went to small village in the hills on the other side of the lake interesting drive. On 40 minutes from Guadalajara. Only thing here is traffic is really congested. Only one 2 lane road in and out.

Several towns around this very large lake share a lot of local beauty and the climate is a micro one controlled by the vast lake and surrounding mountains.

If you are spending a few days in Guadalajara, then Lake Chapala is a must. To see the largest lake in Mexico, you can choose from Chapala (more popular, less expensive) or Ajijic (more sophisticated and more expensive) or why not do both. In Ajijic, you starting point should be the Plaza (center of town) there are plenty of Art... More
