Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Facing the Basilica on the far right next to the banos (2p). Closed for siesta (2-4 pm). There are pieces Approx 16 inches square that will fit into your luggage (that's approx. 16"x16') . The Huichols have figured this one out. These pieces are 800P. Try to take correct pesos. The attendant is very sweet and tries to juggle change. Be aware, each artist has their own peso envelope for the pesos for their art. They have great decorated deer heads at 550P. Fragile. I dropped my bag within 500' of the door. Hopefully superglue will ressurect a broken off antler. Deer head now nostalgia value. Lots of more cheaply priced stuff. The actual museum is neat but dark. Your eyes will adjust. My entrance fee was waived cause I was buying. Out on the street there's a great refresca stand that sells a frsh limeonade with chia for 15P. Not sweet ,Very refreshing. Next to cab stand. The whole area, basilica and all , is outstanding. Just walk and enjoy.

It is a humble place. Nothing fancy. It cost me fifteen pesos to enter. It is relatively small but it has beautiful art work. You can see their history through their eyes. The woman in charge is interesting. The art work is not too cheap, but you can go to the Plaza and negotiate prices there. You can also return to the store to buy an item. I loved the colorful pieces that were above the store.

Some interesting information on the Huichol. Aspects of the religion, history, living structures, and clothing are covered briefly. Don't expect a large museum. It's only $10 pesos ( about USD $.80 ) The gift shop has lots of jewelry, masks, and tapestries. I can't comment on whether the prices are good, as I didn't shop around.

I have been to the Guadalajara area three times. All three times I went to the Huichol Museum and stayed from opening to closing. It IS very small, if all you want is a look-see, you only need about 1/2 hour. But for enthusiats of Huichol Arte, this is the place to go. The work is of the highest quality. The work cannot be purchased by heading to any street vender. The pieces are incredibly inexpensive as compared to the cost here in the US. Pieces sold for $50 go for roughly $300 in the US. The $100 dollar pieces go for about $600 in the states. If you want to see and or buy pieces of this incredible art form, the humble museum is the place to go.

This museum does a grave disservice to the gifted indigenous craftsman who create its works. The gallery is lit only by a few flourescent lights placed very high above, and staff refused to turn on the lights placed above each work of art. There is no one available to explain the work or its context, and no native artisans producing works on site so that visitors get a true sense of what's involved. It's regrettable that plenty of touristy souvenir shops do a far better job of showcasing Huichol art and culture.

This is a very small museum near the Basilica. You enter and leave through a small work shop. The museum while small does explain aspects of the Life of the Huichol . There are descriptions in English and Spanish. It looks like the exhibits have not changed in years and it would be interesting to hear if life for the Huichol changes now that their art is mass produced. What is more interesting is the story behind the gift shop. The Huichol come to the church and the area for medical treatment and sell pieces to help defray costs (not all the pieces are bought). The piece I bought had been there for six years. So if interested in the Huichol you are giving some support to the community,.

Small museum with good basic information about the Huicholes. You maybe able to buy some of the necklaces, earings, etc cheaper from street vendors.

My wife and I were interested in getting some Huichol art but did not have a lot of time in Guadalajara to look for places that sell it - we couldnt find any at the mercado two blocks away in Zapopan and none of the street vendors just outside the Basilica were selling any Huichol items, which surprised us. We also struck out at the Mercados Libertad and Corona, too. So, it was the gift shop at the museum or leaving empty handed. This is a shame because the Huichol designs are really nice and deserve a wider market.

Anyway, since we were in the gift shop, we decided to tour the little museum. It was $1. And I gotta say, it was pretty cool, they do a lot with the limited resources here. It is not just a collection of arts and crafts, there are displays dedicated to different aspects of Huichol life: birth, marriage, death, farming, home life, warfare, etc. Could it be better? Sure. Do the Huichol deserve a larger museum with better curated displays? Absolutely. But this is a good start.

If you go to Zapopan, check out this little museum next to the Basilica and support the gift shop.

Beautiful displays of Huichol handicrafts, none of which are necessarily cheap, but lots of work shown in the design and detail. The bees wax in which beads are imbedded in figures and other things is impressive and obviously lots of work to do this craft.

The northern part of the state of Jalisco is there heart of the Huichol homeland. These indians, their beliefs, customs and costumes are very special. The museum does not do them justice.
