We all know Guanajuato for its rocky streets, its participation in Mexico's Independence, Don Quijote and the Cervantino; yet what many might not know is that Guanajuato is/was also famous for its mines. This small museum/mine proved a brief introduction into the mining industry that still operates in Guanajuato (thought, it is not as big as it used to be).... More

Guanajuato has been a mining town for some time. Today, there are still active mines in the area operated by a Canadian mining company. The company, of course, will not let anyone visit their active mining operations or view the process. You can visit the area of the main and still active part of the Valenciana mine but only to... This mine is located in Valenciana (about 1 hr outside of Guanajuato) about a 3 minute walk from the Templo de Cayatano (also called Valenciana Temple). It is actually called Mina La Valenciana: Bocamina San Cayetano. I enjoyed the tour, although you only descend about 60 meters. Nowadays, the rest of the mine is closed to tourists. Here are my... A rare experience to go down deep into the underground mining tunnel. Narrow steps and clearance. Lots of stairs to tackle, a little dark. Not much to see down there but go just for the feel how it is to be in a mine.

I enjoyed my visit to the bocamina san cayetano; however, there wasn't too much see. My trip, however, was made special as I had my own individual visit with a very charming guide. I also chose to visit this mine as I am claustrophobic and the stairs and mine itself are both quite roomy, so I Did have any problems.

I just visited this place a few days ago. It is worth the trip from the Centro of Guanajuato. To reach this place, at the town Centro, we waited for a bus at the corner fronting Mercado Hidalgo (across the street) very near the Turismo kiosk. The very nice gentleman there said the bus marked "Valenciana" passes by every 10-15... More

Very interesting! First time inside a mine and it was a very good experience. Our guide was very informative. Better be in shape because you go down 60 meters and there are no elevators, we were very tired when we got back to the top. Take water with you. A must see when visiting Guanajuato

We had quite high expectations and were a bit disappointed. There's not that much to see. You step down 60 meters in a kind of tunnel and that's it. The interesting thing are the explanations given by the guides. Unfortunately they're in Spanish only, so we did not understand everything. It's a nice excursion but not really spectacular.

The descent into the mine is down steep, rough, uneven stone steps in poorly lit conditions, with a single rope handrail -- but is a cakewalk compared to what to young miners endured bringing silver ore to the surface for Spain. The guide spoke only Spanish, but very clearly. The mine has, and is surrounded by, vendors selling minerals, silver... More
