- RheRayLondon, United Kingdom29 contributionsMexican Art At Its FinestBored of waiting in line and overwhelmed at the sheer magnitude of works on display at the “Museo Nacional de Antrologia” and distraught at not being able to advance book tickets to “Museo Frida Kahlo” - “Museo de Arte Popular” offers a colourful alternative to the well trodden tourist trail of Mexico City. Elitist West European culture tends to be very sniffy about folk art. However folk art is the life blood of Mexican culture. It gives the distinct flavour that distinguishes Mexican art from the rest of the world. While you might be nervous the museum’s works might resemble nothing more than a Mercado Artesanal Mexicano. The art on display is of stunning quality, extremely colourful and wonderfully curated. There is enough information and context that doesn’t overwhelm or bore. At this present time there are a comfortable number of visitors, no massive lines to enter, enough space to appreciate the exhibits without obscuring fellow onlookers and vice versa. With enough time to enjoy the pieces without feeling rushed. I highly recommend “Museo de Arte Popular” it celebrates the joy of Mexican art and even the gift shop is a delight. This museum should be on all tourists’ schedules.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 December 2023
- ksufan88Wichita, Kansas6,589 contributionsFun and colorful artworkThis museum has interesting displays of artworks from various regions and cultures of Mexico. When you enter the museum on the bottom floor, you will see a bead-covered Volkswagen and several very large and colorful Alebrije (fantastical animals). There is something for everyone: pottery, jewelry, woodworking, paper mache, etc. There was a very amusing section of day of the dead (skeleton) themed artwork as well lots of interesting masks. We spent 1 1/2 hours here and could have spent more time here but the museum was closing.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 January 2024
- kleicSan Antonio, Texas1,085 contributionsColor and CultureWhat a joyful place! If you're at all interested in Mexican culture, this is a wonderful place to learn a bit about alebrijes, masks, various festivals and celebrations, and all sorts of traditions in different regions. The museum isn't overwhelming and it certainly wasn't crowded the day I was there. A lot of the verbiage is in English as well as Spanish and it has an amazing gift shop.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 3 March 2024
- vagabond_dreamsAlberta, Canada367 contributionsDon't miss itWe didn't get around to this museum on our first visit to Mexico City several years ago, but so glad we did so this time around. Loved all of it - the art is so interesting and uplifting. The amazing beaded Volkswagen Beetle in the front foyer is a fitting introduction to the wonderful art inside the museum. Even better, we visited on a Sunday when admission was free for all visitors (not just Mexican nationals), and it was not very crowded. Recommended!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 April 2024
- Mick12 contributionsGreat Museum, Perfect for FamiliesThis is a great museum, suitable for kids and adults. It features multi-floor exhibits of folk and popular art. The current exhibit includes a fascinating textile exhibit by San Miguel de Allende artist Lena Bartula, reason enough to visit. Exhibits can be seen within 90 minutes to 2 hours. I've been more than three times and always find something interesting.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 3 July 2024

Plan to spend 1.5 hours. Excellent examples of Mexican folk art.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 11 July 2024

This is a must-see museum if you want to get a glimpse of true Mexican culture from a more modern perspective. There are three levels of beautifully presented sculpture, weaving, costumes, ceramics, jewelry, etc. etc. Don’t miss the view of the calacas (skeletons presented in dia de los muertos displays) from the third floor through a hole to the second floor. Clever!
Children will be in awe of the toys and miniatures.
Teens will love the various art pieces that are a bit risque.
The video snippets of artisans provide insight and are awe-inspiring.
Every display has explanatory placards in Spanish and English.
And if you tend to get overwhelmed by very large museums, this one is perfectly sized for a 2-3 hour visit.

This museum is not too big, not too small and has something for everyone. The art is fun to look at, but also high quality and diverse showing popular arts from all over Mexico. The building is lovely and the gift shop is spectacular.

As many attractions are closed due to the pandemic, this is a good option for those willing to visit a quiet/clean/safe space with a beautiful exhibition on Mexican popular culture. Lots of items, from urns, dresses, collars and masks to contemporary art. Highly recommended (entrance is 60 Mexican pesos; cards not accepted). There is also a store. Some of the items may look pricey but if you look around you may find some high quality stuff, worth checking.

Though generally not a fan of folk art, I stumbled upon this gem of a museum near Chinatown and Alameda Park. It is awash with cultural artifacts of Mexico and is very interesting. It is four stories of colorful representations of the various states of Mexico spanning a few centuries. I spent more than two hours there and really enjoyed it. BTW, folks 60+ get in free, even non-Mexicans.

If you want to have a clear overview of Mexican traditions seen through the eyes of amazing handcrafters then you cannot miss the MAP. All the halls display exquisite and selected works of art. Being paints, wooden handcrafts, pottery or colorful textiles. This museum has it all. The only thing missing is a hall dedicated to musical traditions. All in all a great place. The museum shop is also superb. There are parking lots and lots of restaurants around. Great place to spend a Saturday or Sunday with the family.

We absolutely loved this museum and the amazing variety of items it showcases! So many different styles and mediums of artwork displayed here, a really nice cross-section of Mexican culture is presented. This would be a good museum for kids too, since it's not so big and the pinatas and giant, colorful paper-mache surreal figures are very appealing to all ages. I would absolutely go back again. This and the Anthropology Museum were my 2 favorites.

This is a small museum in the historic area of Mexico City. It is spectacular. It’s a great representation of the different crafts that are made by the artisans in the varying regions of the country. Mexico is blessed with such diversity in so many ways, and this museum reflected this abundance in its crafts.

The museum is located near Alameda Central in a beautiful Art Deco building. It showcases the best of popular art from all states of Mexico in very nice displays. An especially good time to go is in October nearing the Day of the Dead.

There was when I visited a year ago. (Why do readers post no-help answers like "there should be"??) By the way, when you write "luggage", it makes me think that you might want to check suitcases or large backpacks. You might call ahead about that. The check room was pretty small.
