A date with mother nature in Oaxaca!
It was very informational and the guide made sure to explain the origins and history behind some of the most prominent plants in the region. Came away feeling much more enthralled with Oaxacans symbiotic relationship with nature. Highly recommended activity during your stay here!

    Beautiful Botanical Garden in Oaxaca
This lovely garden behind the temple of Santo Domingo was great to come and check out. For starters, you are only able to see the garden IF YOU DO A TOUR. This is important information because you can’t just walk in and start looking around. Lucky for me I showed up exactly as they were gonna start a tour at 5 pm and got to see the tour for only 5$. It was a great time. The tour guides take you around to different sections of the garden and show you the many plant species they have in the area. She mentioned there is something like over 950 species of plants but they’re aiming to have over 1300. It is very impressive and I loved getting to be in that environment for a bit, even if it was just for an hour.

    This was an excellent tour.
We took the English tour, the guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and very informative about the gardens, local customs and history. Some very interesting plants to see and a well laid out beautiful garden. The guide couldn’t accept tips but did an excellent job and we would highly recommend!

I found it kind of strange that the only way to visit the garden was by joining a tour. But this is not just a garden where you go and see plants that are nicely labeled. The point of having a guide is to relate the plants to the history and culture(s) of Oaxaca. Our guide today is a PhD. The plants are not labeled at this time, although there are plans to develop a self-guided tour. The ages of the plants give no indication; this is a young program still in development.

Inside the walls of the garden it is hard to imagine that you are in the middle of a big city. There are over 1,000 species represented with some masterful work in soils, humidity and watering to sustain them.

All that said, it was a wonderful experience of learning about plants, history, even down to the political activism that foiled the state's plans to pave the space for a parking lot. You'll need to arrive early (1 hour recommended), but they let you through the gate and there is comfortable seating inside to wait.

Very frustrating. You can’t but tickets in advance, you can’t book online (there is a contact email address but they don’t respond) and there is only 1 English tour a day. As others have said, you end up having to get there really early to get on it and then you sit there waiting for an hour or so. Tour itself was very slow as group was too large - 30 people maybe? Wes expecting real horticultural info from the guide but was fairly sporadic and limited. They are planning to introduce self guided tours at some point but are short staffed. P.S. there are great views of the garden from the excellent museum next door!

I was really hoping to give this botanical garden experience a 5/5. The garden is beautiful to see the range of plant life grown in Oaxaca-that part was surely a 5-especially as the garden has only been in existence some 20 years. The issue was that when we got there for the 11:00am English tour we were told it was “full”, although there was no evidence of the English speaking tour anywhere. But what we got was a very oversized tour with what looked like about half the group being English speakers. Wonder what happened?

Such a beautiful place to visit. There is such a vast history about their plants and foods that they grow. The tour guide of the garden was really knowledgeable about the garden.

I had seen the gardens featured in some instagram posts and thought it looked cool so I decided to check it out during my visit to Oaxaca. I was staying very close to it so I did no research, I just showed up. I happened to arrive shortly before the spanish speaking tour. I was a little confused because I didnt want a tour, I just wanted to explore. That is not possible, you must pay for a tour if you want to come in. It was cheap so I did. The tour was around 40-45 minutes so it wasn't bad but it was in spanish, which I can only understand conversationally. I thought the grounds were beautiful but not as large as I expected. I think I would have enjoyed it more had it not have been a forced tour, I may have taken longer to walk through slowly and enjoy the plants.

I am only rating this experience 3/5 as it’s not something I am interested in. We didn’t do enough research (or read reviews!) to know that you can only tour this location with a guide (only 2 times per day - one English and one Spanish) and during the tour they talk through each of the plants. It wasn’t what I was expecting and I possibly wouldn’t have attended if I had known it was more guide on botany. But if you are interested, would recommend. Loved that they offer you hats for the walk around considering g how hot it is in the sun!
