- csserious2Chantilly, Virginia823 contributionsSmall museum with a light touch of historyWe spent about an hour at the museum looking at exhibits and narratives pertaining to the history of Cozumel island, from Mayan civilization to Spanish conquest. Interesting to note that Abraham Lincoln wanted to buy the island at one point, but the civil war took his attention to another direction. Furthermore, the Spanish brought smallpox with them, and the native population reduced from 70,000 or more to mere few hundreds. All in all, it was good but nothing in grand scale; could be replete with hundreds of artifacts, paintings and movies depicting Mayan life or Spanish colony. A footnote is that there is no taxi stand there, we had to walk more than a block to catch one.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 December 2023
- CaribMarkCharleston, South Carolina182 contributionsA good museum for an hour of informationSurprisingly nice little museum that offers the history of Cozumel with exhibits, informational signs and small dioramas. It covers everything from the land and sea to the first Mayan settlers to the explorers who nearly wiped out the natives. The museum is clean and air conditioned and only US $7! It's at the southern end of town by the water allowing for easy access to markets and restaurants afterwards. Two small improvements would be a better toilet than the single room, one at a time with no seat on the toilet. Also, most relics are only labeled in Spanish. Definitely worth an hour and a $10 cab ride from Puerta Maya.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 December 2023
- Suzanne MWaterford, Ireland47 contributionsReally worth a visitTo be honest we entered the museum as we hadn't a proper itinerary organised for our time in Cozumel. Plus it was scorching hot outside so we said we would explore the museum. I was really pleasantly surprised. The museum is laid out well, a lot of research & money has been put into it. It gives a great insight into the island & the Yucatan penilsula. The museum has given me a great insight into the island which I will look into when I get home. To all visitors of Cozumel, support this museum, the island deserves it.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 January 2024
- Croc2511 contributionsGreat little museumWhat a find. Great little museum. Everything perfectly presented; just enough information to absorb and not become tedious. The first place I've been to that puts a clear description of Mayan culture into a general historical context. Exactly what I had hoped for in the big Museo del Mundo Mayo in Merida, (but was woefully disappointed there, coming out with more questions than answers).Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024

Very nice, compact museum offering interesting snapshots of the island over many hundreds of years. We spent 1.5 hours here, with four adults and two small kids, and we all found aspects of it interesting. The interactive screens and games were particularly welcome to get the kids interested in the various topics. Don't forget to look upstairs, too!

Disappointed to arrive via taxi to see a closed sign on the door. Closed for renovations May 2018 for 18 months.
A notice on the website would have saved us time/planning. 🙁

My husband and I enjoyed this museum. I wasn't able to see all of the exhibits, which I will explain in another paragraph. We took a Royal Caribbean cruise that has a pier right in downtown San Miguel. We walked to the museum from the pier. Admission is $3 (they accept US dollars). The museum is air-conditioned. The museum is not terribly big which was fine with us as we wanted to do other things, too. They have signs in Spanish and English explaining the museum pieces. We really came to the museum for a quick demonstration on Mayan culture and artifacts so we thought it was neat that they had other stuff on reefs and paintings.
We found some pieces of coral with the word "labyrinth" in its name. My husband had brought his book of short stories by Borges so we laughed about that.
Because I was feeling dizzy, we went to the cafe on the 2nd floor to order drinks. The cafe is out on a small terrace which overlooks the sea. There was a breeze blowing which was quite nice. The menu was very cheap, and although the menu was in pesos, they took US dollars. I ordered a watermelon fruit water, and it was very good. I wished we had had more time to enjoy being out on that terrace.
By this time, I realized that I was dizzy because I was very dehydrated. I had to run to find a bathroom because I was about to get quite sick. Thank goodness the museum had bathrooms on the 2nd floor. They were labeled quite clearly.
So my husband and I left the museum to find Gatorade, which luckily was in a store near the museum. What happened was that I underestimated the temperature. San Miguel bakes in the sun because of all the concrete. I drank 2 glasses of water and a cup of orange juice on the ship that morning, but it turned out that that is not enough. I recommend that you buy a couple of bottles of Gatorade at a store as soon as you get off the ship and force yourself to drink it every 10 minutes. Otherwise your trip will be cut short. I came from Louisiana and mow grass in the sun all the time, but the sun in Cozumel is something else.

My partner and I visited Cozumel while on a cruise to the Western Carribean last April. Instead of joining a shore excursion, we decided to explore Cozumel on our own. From the cruise port terminal, we simply walked along the waterfront and discovered many interesting monuments, restaurants, stores, an airport, and this museum.
We paid $4 to enter and we were very pleasantly surprised by the exhibits. Truly informative and all the artifacts were beautifully laid out. Even the museum's courtyard had a life size indigenous hut and relics. We must have stayed here a good hour and a half to two hours. It was well worth the admission and I highly recommend it.
For more info and pictures about the museum, please visit my blog, Adventures of the Globetrotting Teacher, and click on Mexico among the list of countries visited.

We went into this museum on the information from our resort that it was free and a great way to spend an hour or so on a rain day. We walked in (after being aggressively hassled by a barker of a silver shop) and started to look around. There is no A/C in the museum and there were a lot of leaks in the ceiling, so the tiles were VERY slippery. As we came around the corner to go into another exhibit, we were confronted by someone who may (or may not) have actually worked in the museum demanding $5 to tour. We explained to him that we thought it was free. He got very hostile with us and said that it was $5. We immediately left the premises.

How easy is it to walk from Cruise ship docking?
Written 22 January 2016
This is an old question, but in case it's useful to someone - relatively easy. The museum is about half a mile from the cruise ship dock. The directions are easy - you just walk along the oceanfront main road (Avenida Rafael E. Melgar) until you reach the museum.
