Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We booked through a local cooperative for $25 per person. There were seven of us. There was some current as others have mentioned, but nothing too bad. LOTS of fish and surprisingly quite a bit of coral. Definitely worth a trip if you have the time and like snorkeling.

The tour is thru Adolfo Lopez Mateos Tours. Ask for Captain Pancho. It's to the left as you leave the ferry from Cancun. Very inexpensive. $26 each for three snorkel sites and lunch at Playa Tiburan. El Farito was our very favorite! Flying fish, several types of large parrot fish, angel fish and everything in between. A very weird and very large puffer fish. It was some of the best snorkeling we have seen in the entire Yucatan.

We snorkeled around the light house and enjoyed it. The day we went was pretty windy but we didn't have any issues navigating. The boat dropped us off and we drifted down the reef. We saw a lot of different fish and coral. I would recommend this trip for anyone. I'm not a great swimmer and had no issues, even on a windy day.

Have you ever been experienced...in snorkeling?:) We took a snorkeling excursion that included the lighthouse. If this is your first time, you are going to love it. They feed the fish from the boat to give you a preview. Then they drop you off in the current to bring you around the lighthouse. There are some barracudas and minor other fish for you to see, but nothing spectacular. But if you are experienced, then forego the tourist trap trip. We booked a private snorkel trip with native islanders, Kenny and Roberto. They took us to the coral reef off the north shore, where there is actual sea life, including large grouper, lion fish, and schools of various fish. The water was deep but very clear. You can have it all for $60 total with private guide. If you are not experienced then take the programmed excursion. If you are experienced and you want to see the reef, hire a private boat and go north of the island.

You basically float with the current and get to see all kinds of fish. I paid about $25 which wasn't too bad. Make sure you know what kind of tour you're getting yourself into. I took just enough cash to pay for the trip and got dumped at Shark Beach for a few hours because they hustled for extra money to go on another trip further down the island. Little did I know I was right next to the street and could have walked back to my hotel which was on North Beach.

When you get off the ferry the folks from the Fishing Co-op will descend on you to buy a snorkeling tour/lunch. Can't shop around because who ever you talk to first will follow you around. Quoted cost is 450 pesos or about $35 pp. After 15 minutes we were able to negotiate $30pp. Then waited over 40 minutes until they had filled a small boat with 9 people. The first stop is El Farito and a nice 25 minute drift dive. Then you go to the underwater sculptures called Museo. Spent about 15 minutes here. This is a very pretty spot but we did not have enough time. Last trip to Isla we negotiated with a street seller. The cost for a better trip was $45 a couple. No matter what they tell you they won't leave until the boat is full.

We didn't take a snorkel tour, we kayaked around the bay, pulled kayaks onto rocks, then snorkelled until we were tired . Beautiful fish, easy snorkelling on a calm day.

Those who say snorkeling isn't very good on Isla Mujeres must not have ever been here- the very tip of the peninsula sticking out from Laguna Makax. There were numerous schools of 100+ fish, lots of very healthy coral and I also saw three squid that were about a foot long. I went with Isla Mujeres Trips and highly recommend them. They have a booth just north of Barlito. Ask for Alan or Mariel and they will be able to give you more information.

So, we went to El Farito as part of a snorkeling tour. The one thing to say right away is: Make sure you are a strong swimmer!!! Our boat dropped us off at the sunken ship with El Farito being the pick up spot. The guide led us through several points leading to El Farito. We saw hundreds of multi-colored fish, barracudas and turtles. What we were not told was that the currents were very strong! I had to literally tow my 9 year old the whole way while my 12 year old struggled along. As we arrived to El Farito, we were supposed to hang on to a rope until the boat picked us up. The current ended up taking my 12 year old and I had to swim after him (only a few yards) and tow him back. Great exercise though! All and all, great experience, fish and scenery were worth it and the bonding experience over me towing them was also worthwhile. Would do it all over again.

Mundaca Diving Adventures, located at Avalon Reef hotel, offers a two hour boat excursion to this park, which is really a reef off the Isla coast. A guide named Rigo took my wife and I out snorkeling. We spotted a number of large barracuda, as well as other, prettier fish.
