Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The somewhat cheesy town of Playa del Carmen has an excellent museum dedicated to perhaps Mexico's greatest artist in recent times, Frida Kahlo (1907-1954).

Frida Kahlo lived a tumultuous and tragic life, marked by heartbreaking accidents, involuntary abortions, unfaithful husbands, and flamboyant lovers - and all along, she managed to transform her (especially) downturns into compelling art.

The paintings are reproductions, but it's brilliant to gather Kahlo's entire body of work in one permanent exhibition, portraying her life from birth to death. Viva Frida!

Lovely small museum with lots of information about Frida’s early life and her illnesses along with background info about hee art. The staff are lovely and helpful and all the information is available in Spanish and English I have no idea why is has been reported as closed because it is very much open for business in January 2024

I lucked out and got Luisa as my guide and her knowledge was vast and English was perfect! I learned so much more about Mexican history as well as about Frida and her relationship with Diego and how her life influenced her paintings.

The reproductions of Frida's paintings came alive with Luisa's explanations so I knew what I was looking at and for. Well worth spending 1-2 hours especially when it's raining out.

Costs $20 usd per person. It’s tiny, we finished in about 35 minutes (we read all the placards, took our time). Doesn’t even have original art by Kahlo; instead features some reproductions of her work, alongside many photos and some letters she wrote.
It felt like reading a well done Wikipedia entry about Frida. This museum should charge $5 usd. I’m a Frida Kahlo fan, but even for me the cost per minute ratio felt off.

I've seen notes it's closed. But we decided to check that out during evening. So next morning we got ready and went there with my teenage daughter. She loves all kind of museums. And yes, it met all our expectations and even exceeded some. Recommend if you are interested in art, Frida, her life and Mexico culture.

Lovely small museum, we spent a nice hour in here. If you love Frida Kahlo, it gives you good information about her as a person.

I should have believed the reviews prior but I took hope it had opened back up because the website still functions and I even found a page where I could book tickets for a timed entry (I did not do that). The place is definitely closed and has been for two years.. ever since covid started. It does not look like they are planning to open back up.

Sidebar: I also went hunting for art galleries around town and the only one I could find was Gaston Charo which is close to this Frida location. It’s small, but nice. Playa is not really an artsy place, unless you count all the murals all over town which are pretty cool.
