Paradise has been lost.
beaches of Tulum are better this time of year but not as nice as 10 yrs ago. lots of garbage. very little work visible to remove. lots of beach clubs closed and the rest are exploiting the people that come. Everyone selling drinks at 15-18 dollars and food is pretty much on par with USA. unfortunately the beach front area is very very expensive and exploited, and since the beaches are no longer beautiful no need to waste time in Tulum. PS Sine I hear a lot of negative stuff about Tulum but do not see it here I wounder about the reality of the reviews.

If you want to see what mass tourism can do to an idyllic location, then look no further than Tulum. It is massively overpriced and overhyped and yet there is very little investment in infrastructure (the beach road is particularly congested and dangerous if you are walking or cycling).
As for Tulum beach itself, it is sandy and gently sloping but unfortunately there are too many hotels and beach clubs now and it does suffer from a significant amount of seaweed being washed ashore.

We love Tulum. Unfortunately this year the beach was not good, last year it was beautiful and perfect. A local did recommended us a place called Caleta Tanka, it is located 20 minutes from the Zona Hotelera, the beach here was clean and cristal clear (posted a picture in this review), and the drinks and food were much more affordable/economical. Keep in mind that Tulum Beach (Zona Hotelera) is extremely expensive, the dollars compare to the Mexican Pesos don’t go far. Prices are like being in the USA, and normally when you go to a Latin American country your Dollars are strong, not here. I assume that their profits are extremely high due that they pay their expenses/overhead in Mexican Pesos but charge like in Dollars. If you go out to Tulum Town, out of the Zona Hotelera the prices of food and drinks go down a lot, big time.
We will visit Tulum again for sure. Hopefully next year the beach will be beautiful again.

Our first and last time in Tulum. Is over rated, very expensive and not a place to go with small children. Very poor nothing like it shows in advertisement. If you don’t book with a hotel or resort you are basically have to pay an enormous amount of money to find a restaurant with beach access which by the way is dirty! Nothing compare to what you see on interne, lots of algae, plastic, etc if you are one of the people that gets an air b and b, you will pay for every activity ranging from $80 a person per activity, if can imagine at the end of each day you will be paying around $350 or more per person each day! Crazy amount for such an ugly and poor environment. If you are planing to go to Cancun or Olaya del Carmen is better to book with a resort that has has all inclusive. Ohhh and when you get off the plane , at the airport they will try to sell you packages of the activities which are around $1500 for a family of 6 for one day with the catch that you go the next day at a hotel with free breakfast. Well guess what? It’s time share, don’t go. They will keep you there for 5 hours trying their hardest for you to buy time share for a ridiculous amount of money. Overall this is a place I will not recommend at all!

After staying and enjoying Holbox, Valladolid, Mérida, Bacalar, we are very disappointed by Tulum. We turned back to the archaeological site of Tulum. In fact, it is necessary to pay the parking 150 pesos then the entrance of the site 451 pesos per person. These prices are excessive for a visit that takes 40 minutes (not far from the prices of Chichen Itza and Uxmal, whose super interesting visits last about 2 hours). Many of us were turning back. Then access to the beautiful beach is only through private hotel entrances. As we were there early in the morning, we could access through 1 unguarded entrance but otherwise access is impossible. In short, everything is done to drain American tourists, the biggest customer around. In short, Tulum is to be avoided.

We came due to hearing how great it was. The rustic vibe, food and drinks were all lovely. The service was also great wherever we went. The beach was beautiful but we didn’t spend much time there with the weather and our plans. There were armed guards entering the hotel zone which did make us feel somewhat safer as well.
BUT…
We hired a rental car and did the drive from Playa del Carmen, thinking nothing of it until we arrived to the most horrific roads I’ve ever come across. Not the best start to a relaxing holiday! It took us 30 minutes to get through a road which should have taken half the time if the roads were in better condition. This was more concerning as we’d planned to drive out to Cenotes and see Chichén-Itzá during our stay.
Our hotel was in a great location, but we were surprised to find so many derelict buildings. The beach was nice but there doesn’t appear to be any public access - all via hotels/beachclubs. Our hotel had its own as well as a sister hotel with access, so imagine most places you stay are like this. The road to walk up and down on has no footpath either so you are also dodging puddles / potholes with traffic. We are able travellers so not a problem but would not do this with a family.
We went out to eat one night to a place and thought we’d take a cab back until they wanted to charge us $15 for a 5 minute ride.
The mosquitos are a nightmare and no one really seems to do anything about them.
Generally, it seems very overpriced for what it is and I don’t see us coming back. We felt it was an overpriced wannabe Bali, which really is held to a much higher standard. I imagine it maybe had a cooler vibe a while back but definitely not now.

The second time, I visited Tulum.
First time was for 1 day, and we were amazed by the beauty of the beach, it was accessible via a boutique hotel beach club.
This time, we decided to come for 1 week, rented a condo, + a car.
It's been a nightmare, the city is extremely noisy, party's everywhere can't sleep at night...and truck deliveries all time of the day or night...
Plus the whole city is under construction. There is nothing relaxing in Tulum.
Beach access is almost impossible unless you pay 20$ USD for parking (forget about bicycle, they refused to let you lock them anywhere unless you pay 10$ per bicycle) plus a stiff fee the access the beach.
Food is more expensive then on the French Riviera, and you'll be sittings on an old wooden chair outside with feet on gravel.
It's a terrible setting, in my opinion, and a rip-off.
I had a way better experience in Playa Del Carmen

After a week in Tulum, and a lot of time reflecting, I have to say, there was nothing at all nice about Tulum Centre or Tulum Beach area, these areas are incredibly dirty, litter is staggering, roads / paths are in total disrepair, you cannot access a beach without paying or visiting a beach club (paying even more), the authorities even started charging residents, though rowed back on that after an outcry.
The taxis are incredibly expensive, they make the prices up on the spot, no meter, cash only (though many do have a card machine hidden in glove box) and they are just out to rip people off, 100%.
Now, that does not mean that there are some nice restaurants, bars, and very nice people, there are - all of the above, however against an overall back drop of decay, filth, litter, mess….it is hard to see past all of that.
Someone somewhere is making a lot of money out of tourists to Tulum, but there is no evidence of any of that money being invested to improve the area, attract more tourists, put proper infrastructure in place, the money is going elsewhere!
It is a big world out there, there are thousands of places better than Tulum - go eslsewhere

beaches of Tulum are full of sargasum. very difficult smell. very little work visible to remove. lots of beach clubs closed. but my biggest problem is it seems every club and restaurant is selling drinks at 350 pesos or 15 dollars and food very high price but food is nothing special ( americanized mexican). unfortunately the beach front area is very very expensive and exploited, and since the beaches are no longer beautiful no need to waste time in tulum.

Do not come here!!! The town was not ready for the mass tourism that has exploded here over the past years. The hotel zone became a no go zone for us due to traffic, you will be stuck along the strip for around 1-2hours if you wish to go. In addition, the beach is not accessible unless you pay heaps to go to a beach club. The public beaches are way too packed and very hard to access, we had to line up and pay twice to enter the public beach. The whole beach feels fake and just for instagram. Tulum town itself is alright, not much to do and see here though. Good spot if you want to travel out of Tulum to other places, but I will never come back

I'm thinking of going to Tulum in December ...Is seaweed still that bad where you can't swim in ocean? We were thinking of staying Nueva Vida De Ramiro?
Written 4 November 2019
December they said it’s high season so no seaweed it’s clear blue water.

There are National Guard everywhere. You might not be the victim of a violent crime but you’ll be scammed everytime money is due for anything. It will be an argument. You’ll lose many of them unless you speak Spanish and aren’t afraid to be loud.

In October we are going on a cruise and doing the Tulum ruins excursion when we stop in Cozumel. Our main focus is the ruins but we were hoping to get in the water for a little bit just off the back of the ruins. Should we not even plan to do that? I do not have much knowledge of the Sargassum seaweed, is there a chance it will get better by then? This will help me with what to pack for the day. Thank you in advance.

It suppose to be better in That season but nature is impredictible. I do hope is better still there are another options like tje cenotes you can visit for the day you arr there.

We are planning to visit Tulum from 8th to 11th Aug, 2019. The seaweed news around has confused us on our visit.
Will most of the Tulum beaches be affected by seaweed and not worth visiting? Is there any beach which will not be affected? Please suggest looking at the current situation, will Playa Del Carmen be better incase Tulum is bad.
Thanks is advance for your help

I am currently in Tulum, from what I have heard and seen most beaches are covered in seaweed. This is a problem in the entire region not just Tulum. This being said YES it is still worth it! Have a realistic expectation and be open to experiencing more then the beach. There are beautiful cenotes to swim, ruins to visit, and culture/food to eat. If it's just the beach and blue water your looking for go somewhere else. Others will enjoy the area with less crowds.

We pre-paid for a rental from Avis but I'm seeing horrible reviews. Will the fraud activity not occur since we have already paid for the car?
Written 27 March 2019
The fraud acticity is not just from Avis.... And the fraud itself is this: You rent a car, you do not take extensive pictures of the vehicle and when you return it, you are pressed for time, scared to miss your flight and boom, it takes one dishonest person sometimes 2 to make your day a living hell. I was once charged the whole cost of a fiat. Imagine 18000usd appearing on your credit card overnight ahah not fun but I solved the matter free of charge, I had an employee returning the vehicle 2 days later and they tried to say there was all this damage.
TAKE 2 ADVICES: PURCHASE THE TOP INSURANCE THAT COMES WITH THAT CAR FROM AVIS.
DO NOT BUY THIRD PARTY CAR INSURANCE BEFORE YOUR TRIP.
UNITED STATES OR CANADA THIRD PARTY INSURANCE MEANS YOU AREN'T DEALING WITH THE MEXICAN INSURANCES AND LAWS DIRECTLY!
It is worth to buy that super expensive insurance, my boss crashed a jeep into a palm tree(FREE). They do not look at the vehicle when you return it.

I've been reading that it's dangerous renting a car to travel around with, like from cancun airport to tulum, did you notice anything during your stay?
