'Mongdol' means pebble, and Hakdong Mongdol Beach is comprised solely of black pebbles. When viewed from above it is said that the beach resembles a hawk, or 'hak,' hence the name Hakdong Mongdol. The black pebbles are a nice aesthetic. There was a cold wind in early March so we did not actually swim or sun on the beach.

A very very lovely place, where I would definitely visit again if I ever re-visit Gojae again. This beach is not as much known to the public so it's not crowded and one can really get some real good, quite rest here by the seaside. Lots of local food stores, welcomed by friendly owners too so do grab yourself some good food and coffee by the beach if you are ever here. (Ps: Pensions are available around this area too for a overnight stop!)

A interesting beach where you dont see white sand here but the black pebbles that make up the beach front the locals enjoy it, i just had a view and soaked by legs before departing geohe. Something different from any other beach, similar to Hawaii.

My family and I had a 20 minute stopover at this impressive and interesting 1.2 km long and 500 m wide pebble beach (which is part of the Hallyeohaesang National Park) in the late weekday afternoon on our way to Busan from Windy Hill. There were not many people at the beach.

Getting there: it is about 6 km or about 10-minute drive from Windy Hill. We parked our rental car at a free-parking car park and walked across the road to the beach. There are several restaurants and shops along this road where your thirst and hunger can be taken care of.

The attraction: "Mongdol" is Korean for “pebble” and “Hakdong” was given to this beach because its shape resembles a crane (in Korean "Hak") flying up to the sky. This pebble beach is part of a bay and flanked by two high hills or mountains on either side. It has no sand but just grey pebble stones – shingles and cobbles – measuring as short as 1 cm to as long as 15 cm. As the pebble beach contacts directly to the sea, you could pick up any pebble stone and throw it into the sea – so the phrase of “within a stone’s throw” became so real and applicable.

You could walk the pebble beach with your shoes or barefoot (without shoes), the latter is said to be therapeutic. Either way, walk carefully as a fall onto the hard pebbles can result in a bloody injury. In any case, walking on pebbles meant that I did not have to be concerned about sand getting into my footwear because there was no sand. Nevertheless, we wished we could have more time to swim in the clear waters or to just simply laze around.

We have visited beaches that has white sand, yellow sand, red sand and black volcanic sand. But this is our first visit to a rare beach that has only pebble stones. So I strongly recommend a visit, if you have the time, to a pebble beach in South Korea for a unique experience, such as the impressive Hakdong Mongdol Beach.

Very different beach to the others in the area as it is made up of black pebbles/stones no sand, nothing really exciting about it.

Despite all of the coastlines that outline Geoje, there is a lack of sandy beaches. Hakdong Mongdol Beach is one of the better known beaches which is covered with black pebbles. The rockiness doesn’t make for an easy stroll on the beach but it’s a nice place to stop for a drink at one of the coffee shops or convenience stores to enjoy the sound of the waves.

It's a pebble beach with near perfect colourful pebbles lying on the beach. It may not be an easy walk to stroll along the beach with big size pebbles but certainly you will be willing to spend time to walk and feel the experience while taking photos.

It was a great experience. Firstly, i went to the sand beach, spent some hours and then off to the pebble beach.
Pebble is a nice place. The beach is neat and the water is so clean. No sand in the beach just stones that are of tiny and medium size and of black, milk and white colors. people at the beach are friendly, life guards in place and you can do a boat ride for some amount of korean won . Though the hills can be scary when coming to the beach location. Nevermind, the road and vehicle experience so cool.

I came with my hosts, and they brought a mat and we all sat down on the beach with warm coffees and had a good chat here. They told me that the sound of the water hitting against the pebbles is relaxing to the ears and I must agree. Nothing much to do on the beach, but at night families were setting off firecrackers (this is normal in Korea) and also just spending time together, sitting on mats and chit-chatting, just like us. You can stay as short or as long as you'd like.

I viaited very early in the morning, so mosy of the beachfront restaurants weren't open. However it was nice to walk along the ocean with the cliffs and islands providing a scenic backdrop.
