Day out in Essex

An old historical building. Not big but full of history. Next to a church. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Invitation to view

Feeling like royalty I visited the guildhall in Finchingfield through the invitation to view events. We were certainly treated well and the whole afternoon was a wonderful experience; from well informed and knowledgeable accounts of the history of the guildhall and its place in Finchingfield's community to detailed explanations of the restoration, taking it right back to its wattle and daub roots.
The building oozes history and one can feel the stories that are told in the wonderful displays in the museum and the now completed, perfect restoration. One can now book the hall for events and it is well used as a place of education and serving the community as per its original purpose. Well done!

Nice afternoon
May 2018 • Friends
The Guildhall was the centre, once, of this wonderful Essex village. It was a wonderful sunny day so a trip out was needed to revive the spirits. Finchingfield, with its duck pond, nice pubs, tea shops and church is worth a visit. Wander around and check out the windmill, the oldest in Essex and the only one of originally seven that survives. As I have said, a nice choice of tea rooms around the green at reasonable prices. But, if you wish a stronger beverage, The Fox pub will draw you in. A nice afternoon stroll so relaxing. Lucky people that live there.

Best of Essex

Finchingfield village and the Guildhall are such a delight, a village green fronted by duck pond, quaint bridge, candy coloured cottages, pub and tea houses. The Guildhall frequently stages art exhibitions by local daubers. Parking may be tricky in the summer but there are many options for squeezing in you auto.

Language classes at the Guildhall

This is an iconic building in the centre of the village and it is a pleasure to teach there in a venue which was originally a grammar school in the sixteenth century.

Perfect local museum for familis

We visited Finchingfield and found the Guildhall almost by accident one weekend - and what a joyful discovery. It is a charming and beautifully designed local history museum with informative and often interactive displays. It is carefully planned and full of surprises. Worth the trip to the village on its own, but the rest of the village is stunning too.

Beautiful village and the bonus of a TGudoe themed weekend.

Lots of "Tudor" people engaged in day to day activities, many of which were available for visitors to try. There were travelling bakers with their lovely "dragon head" oven, puppeteers with their tales of a great dragon, a barber surgeon explaining how to pull teeth and amputate limbs, and various "have a go" crafts. The Cunning Man told us of the various "charms" he had for sale, and a herald designed our own family coat of arms. Prices were very low and there was something for everyone of the family. I hope this becomes a regular event.
